RIOPELLE: CROSSROADS IN TIME | Vancouver Art Gallery
Mar 21–Sep 1, 2025 (UTC-8)
Vancouver
Riopelle: Crossroads in Time is a retrospective exhibition that covers 50 years of Jean Paul Riopelle’s creative production. Organized by the National Gallery of Canada to mark the centenary celebration of Riopelle’s birth, the exhibition brings together paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints and collages by the artist.
The presentation features artworks drawn from 20 private and public collections and includes a number of significant works, as well as works that have not been previously exhibited. Curated by art historian and independent researcher Sylvie Lacerte, the exhibition highlights one of the most significant Canadian artists of the twentieth century.
LUCY RAVEN: MURDERERS BAR | Vancouver Art Gallery
Apr 28–Sep 28, 2025 (UTC-8)
Vancouver
Lucy Raven: Murderers Bar is the first major presentation of work by multidisciplinary artist Lucy Raven in Vancouver and the artist’s largest exhibition in Canada to date.
Based in New York, Raven (b. 1977) works in installation, photography, video, drawing and sculpture to examine historic and contemporary representations and narratives of the American West.
The exhibition takes its name from Raven’s newest work Murderers Bar (2025), the third installment in a series of moving-image installations and related works called The Drumfire. Co-commissioned by the Vancouver Art Gallery and The Vega Foundation, it features an ensemble of sculptural elements and a video, projected vertically on a tall, free-standing aluminum structure in the gallery space. Created between 2023 and 2025, the video centres around the recent removal of a century-old, concrete gravity dam along the Klamath River in Northern California—the biggest dam removal project in American history.
The exhibition also presents previous and related works—including a selection from Raven’s series Depositions (2024) and Casters X-2 + X-3 (2021)—that provide further context to her practice and a broader appreciation of her ongoing investigations and visual language. The arc of these works reveals the intermingling of nature and technology; the frequent interrelation of military and entertainment applications; and the impact of these forces on lived experience.
Together, the works in this exhibition provide a timely glimpse into the expanding field of Raven’s vision—the push and pull between human intervention and the more-than-human forces of nature and the physical world. The exhibition explores objectivity, subjectivity and perception, from individual and discrete elements of history, technology and the popular imagination to the broader sweep of geological and physical forces that define experience over millennia.
This exhibition is part of the 2025 Capture Photography Festival Featured Exhibitions Program.
Murderers Bar is co-commissioned and jointly acquired by the Vancouver Art Gallery and The Vega Foundation.
EMILY CARR: NAVIGATING AN IMPENETRABLE LANDSCAPE | Vancouver Art Gallery
Jan 25, 2025–Jan 4, 2026 (UTC-8)
Vancouver
In its exhibition design, Emily Carr: Navigating an Impenetrable Landscape draws out the question of the opening and closing-off of space in Carr’s landscapes by contrasting a densely hung group of paintings with sparsely hung later works that depict an open horizon. Ironically, many of the spatially open works are open precisely because they depict landscapes that had been recently subject to clear-cut logging.
This exhibition uses the spatial metaphor of closeness to and distance from nature to probe Carr’s thinking about the forests she painted. It will also examine how Carr’s representation of some Indigenous subjects—particularly villages and totem poles set within landscapes—sit in relation to the dense forest and what this might suggest, given the late 19th- and early 20th-century tendency to conflate Indigenous cultures with nature.

Walking on Air: A unique breathwork experience | 1 Athletes Way
Apr 7, 2025 (UTC-8)ENDED
Vancouver
Experience fluid, effortless movement by syncing your breath with your steps. This unique progression uses walking sticks to unlock the power of your lungs—helping you move with greater ease and efficiency. Most people don't realise that almost 50% of our body weight rests above our lungs. The head, arms and upper chest stack on these two cushions of air and with every step they compress and decompress them as they shift, sway and swing! If we learn to use this air effectively, it becomes a hidden source of power. The secret? Synchronizing breath with movement—something most of us don’t even realize we’re doing wrong. When breathing, stepping, shifting, and swinging are timed optimally, movement becomes more efficient and effortless—whether for long hikes, running, or maintaining speed. And the best part? This can be trained through neuroplasticity techniques, making it available to anyone. Our bodies were designed to move on our lungs, just like a car runs on tires. By shifting, squeezing your lungs in the right way at the right time, you too can feel like you're Walking on Air! What To Expect In This WorkshopDuring this workshop, we'll progress through positions that allow conscious breathwork to integrate and synchronise with arm swing, ribcage shape, leg stance and neck tone. We start first with upright breathing mechanics, learning to sense rib rotation, what a full exhalation really feels like and why it matters. We play with bringing into conscious awareness the subconscious changes that happen to the sense of the ground when air gathers or leaves the lungs, when hips move position, and when arms swing. This workshop progresses from using both walking sticks → using just one → walking unsupported—mirroring human development from crawling to standing to walking. Who is this For?This workshop is perfect for: ✔ Hikers & Trail Runners looking to improve endurance and efficiency ✔ Dog owners who want to get the most out of walks themselves ✔ Athletes aiming for optimal running and breathing mechanics ✔ Anyone who has Rehabilitated an Injury who wants full-body reintegration ✔ People challenged with Walking Up Hills or Long Distances ✔ Anyone curious to know how the mind, body and breath work together unconsciously By the End of This Workshop, You’ll:✨ Feel a newfound ease in walking—whether on trails, up hills, or in daily life ✨ Move with your breath instead of fighting against it ✨ Unlock a sense of flow, rhythm, and lightness in your body You’ll Also Learn How To: Master the power of the exhale pause to retrain your breathing mechanicsFeel how your breath connects (or disconnects) you from the groundUse walking sticks to re-experience human developmental stagesUnlock muscle tension that limits walking freedomSynchronize ground sense, hip motion, and breath for optimal movementReduce long-distance stress on your body with optimal lung mechanicsExperience new breathing patterns (a past attendee described it as “like realizing there was a whole room in my house that I’d never used!”)Differentiate between arm swings vs. arm reaches and how they shape your ribcageLearn why arm reaching while walking is key to movement efficiencyUse your diaphragm to decompress lower back tensionUnderstand the connection between arm position and core activationIntegrate old injuries into full-body movement patternsCome to appreciate your walking sticks like never before!Have fun exploring movement with like-minded somatic adventurers⚡ Spots are limited! Secure your place today and rediscover what it truly means to Walk on Air.

=============================
Because this is my first proper tour I will be playing music from my entire catalog.
As we go through Sewing Kit, Needle and Thread, and Cloth I’ll tell the stories of those three periods of my life.
By the end of this show you will know me better than most people in my life.
The show will feature full band arrangements played by mannequins (you’ll see), and include extra parts of songs that had been cut.
This is a seated venue and is particularly beautiful. It will be a lovely show.
Hope to see you soon,
Roland
