This year’s theme – Vive la Reine (Long Live the Queen) – marks the first time in 150 years that the tradition of a King theme has been broken. Nice’s connection to the Carnival dates back to a written record in 1294. It mentions that Charles d’Anjou, Count of Provence, passed through Nice… “arriving in the beautiful city of Nice to celebrate the Carnival.” In 1873, the Carnival officially began with city parades, later adding the Battle of the Fleurs (Bataille de Fleurs) and giant King puppets, gradually evolving into France’s largest carnival and one of the world’s four major carnivals. The parade is the highlight of the festival, with giant puppets of various shapes and sizes parading through the streets, accompanied by sunshine, music, and crowds. It is divided into daytime and nighttime sessions. The most eye-catching part of the daytime parade is undoubtedly the "Float Showdown," where 20 floats carrying over 100,000 flowers slowly make their way through the crowd. Flower bearers toss mimosa, lilies, and daisies into the throngs of people, creating a moving sea of ​​flowers that carries the anticipation of spring and fragrant blessings. 90% of the flowers come from the hills surrounding Nice, with local flower growers starting their preparations for the carnival as early as autumn. The evening parade, illuminated by lights and accompanied by music, becomes increasingly atmospheric as the night deepens. On the final night, the King makes his final appearance. This "King's puppet," who has accompanied everyone through two weeks of revelry, is pushed to the center of Promenade des Anglais or Place Masséna by the sea and set ablaze during a countdown. All the bad luck and troubles of the past year are burned away in this fiery spectacle.
