In 2025, the Norton Simon Museum marks the 50th anniversary of its founding in 1975. The exhibition Retrospect: 50 Years at the Norton Simon Museum, on view in the main-level Focus Gallery from February 14, 2025, to January 12, 2026, celebrates five decades of art, education, research and community. Coinciding with the Exterior Improvement Project, which will transform the Museum’s gardens and grounds, Retrospect offers not only a reflective view of the past but also one of the horizon for decades to come.

For several decades, artist Cai Guo-Qiang has used gunpowder and pyrotechnics to create drawings, paintings, and explosion events. The exhibitionCai Guo-Qiang:A Material Odysseywill fill the first floor galleries at the USC Pacific Asia Museum. Based on years of research by the Getty Conservation Institute and the Getty Research Institute,A Material Odysseywill explore the nature and properties of gunpowder and chronicle its use by the artist. This explosive material, invented in China over 1,100 years ago, has come to define Cai’s work. Its unpredictable nature dictates his artistic process and determines the outcome. Through gunpowder, the artist invites uncontrollable forces to participate in the creation of his work. With an abundance of artworks and scientific displays, the exhibition will narrate the lifelong love story of Cai Guo-Qiang with gunpowder. Join LA River Arts in dialogue and curiosity as we explore Moving Mountains, Metabolic Studio’s visionary new initiative that reimagines what it means to repair land, community, and ecological futures along the LA River. This gathering is a tour and teach-in at the Moon. There, we will learn more about the story behind Moving Mountains, a project built upon Lauren Bon’s long-standing engagement with the LA River through her previous work, Bending the River. After the tour, we will head to MoveLA's LA River Festival Trail Charrette, part of a community-driven initiative led by MoveLA alongside FASTLinkDTLA, Agency Artifact, Somos Group, LA Commons, LA Neighborhood Initiative, and the California Community Foundation. The Festival Trail envisions a seamless 28-mile non-vehicular, zero-emission corridor that connects major Paralympic and Olympic venues from LAX to the Rose Bowl, threading through Downtown LA and along the LA River. This workshop invites us to co-design the future of Los Angeles public space, centering equity, mobility, and joy. The tour focuses on debris dislodged by the recent landslides and wildfires along Route 27 in Topanga Canyon. Rather than discard this fertile forest soil, Moving Mountains invites us to consider its generative potential, and how we can transform disaster into ecological repair. (read more) Lauren Bon, in partnership with California State Parks, has secured approximately 1,500 cubic yards (150 truckloads) of pristine forest soil from the landslide on Route 27 (Topanga Canyon Boulevard) to be utilized at the undeveloped 4-acre portion of Los Angeles State Historic Park. Last week, the 4-acre site began receiving soil and serving as a laydown site for the soil to be utilized in current and future development projects at the park and throughout Los Angeles. The landslide, which had obstructed the Topanga Canyon roadway for the past few months, revealed an opportunity to enhance the ecological fabric of our community. This effort marks the inception of a new initiative by Lauren Bon and her team at Metabolic Studio. The project aims to create a network of micro-forests along the LA River, fostering a patchwork of ecological sanctuaries that contribute to the river's ecological agency and biodiversity. Building on the success of Bending the River, an infrastructural artwork that diverts a portion of the LA River to the LA State Historic Park, this initiative is a collaboration between California State Parks, the community, local city officials, nonprofits in District One, and private property owners. The goal is to repair and rejuvenate the floodplain of the historically unbridled LA River, enhancing the area's resilience and ecological diversity. We acknowledge that the Topanga soils are ancestral lands of today’s Gabrielino Shoshone, Tongva and Kizh, and Fernandeño Tataviam nations as are the lands we hope to repair.
