Screenwriting Stepping Stones: Sunderland City Library | Sunderland City Library
Jan 25, 2025 (UTC+0)
Sunderland
From December to January, we’re bringing six open access taster sessions to libraries in and around Sunderland, for anyone to learn about writing scripts for TV. Led by local actor and screenwriter Chess Tomlinson, ‘Screenwriting Stepping Stones’ is a 90-minute dive into everything from structure and formatting, to how to write action, opening scenes and all the moments in between. No screenwriting experience is needed, and those who would like to take their knowledge even further will then be invited to apply for a specialist workshop programme taking place in early 2025. This project is brought to the region in partnership with Culture House Sunderland and is funded by Sunderland City Council and by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. Bursary places: We want to support those for whom cost may be prohibitive to attending this workshop. If this is you, please drop an email to senior programme manager Will Mackie on will@newwritingnorth.com to access a free bursary place.

'Icarus (after Amelia) is a gendered labour study. Beginning in the clouds above the city of Glasgow and continuing to the workplace below, this film is a meditation on ideologies of work; on fixed perspectives, horizons, love, and theoretical determinants. First and foremost a deconstruction of contemporary life through the lens of feminist economic theory, Icarus (after Amelia) is an effort to present audiences with an emotive, intuitive discussion of value, production and hope within the ‘family’ and wider community in Britain. Responding to research and relationships through an intimate process of making and discussion, this body of work traces and archives a period of dramatic change in the UK in 2020/21.’ — LUX ‘Salmon studies how gender is implicated in production as she stages the complex relationship between labour and visibility’ — Laura Guy Franki Raffles ViewpointsThis event is part of a series of films in our cinema on Wednesday evenings which further expand on themes of labour and feminism in Franki Raffles’ exhibition. What a Life?! by Hans Gal | Gosforth
Jan 23, 2025 (UTC+0)
Newcastle
In May 1940, Nazi-Germany launched a surprise attack on Belgium and the Netherlands. Faced with the threat of an invasion and in fear of sabotage, the British Government embarked on a policy of mass internment of German and Austrian Nationals in the United Kingdom. The large majority of the prisoners were Jewish and other refugees who had escaped persecution by the Nazi Regime and were ready to fight against the Nazis together with the British.
They had to stay in the camps for many months until the authorities had dealt with each case individually. Most of the internees were brought to the Isle of Man, which had already been used for internment during World War One.
The composer Hans Gál (1890-1987) became a leading member of the arts committee at Central Camp in the capital Douglas.
After several successful concerts of classical music, the arts committee decided to put on a comic revue to provide much needed light entertainment. It was the brainchild of the Austrian film director Georg Höllering (1897-1980), who had worked with Berthold Brecht on the film ‘Kuhle Wampe’ in 1932. He asked Gál to compose the music for it and called it ‘What a Life!’.
The songs are parodies of actual life in the camp, making fun of the seagulls, the barbed wire, the gender separation, the fitness routine, cleaning up, sharing double beds and observing the blackout.
Unfortunately, the text of the spoken dialogue scenes that were performed between the musical numbers does not survive. What we do have are the songs and instrumental numbers from Gál’s manuscripts, and his wonderful diary ‘Music behind Barbed Wire’, which recounts the whole episode of internment and the creation of the revue in great detail. In performances, we will intersperse the songs with relevant excerpts from Gál’s diary to put them in context. The excerpts have been included with kind permission from Eva Fox-Gál. PerHaps Now - flick, flick, flick, sliiide, pick-up pick-up | High Bridge Works
Jan 28, 2025 (UTC+0)
Newcastle
Led by troupe member Lucy Heaton, this playful and frenetic piece features five performers in white tights and blue bibs as they interact with props like sun loungers, switches, and other hinged collaborators. With slams, folds, and exertions, the performance is a game of click clacking parts. It plays out like a physical puzzle or a desire-dense loop of object-scapades. Originally performed to a sold-out audience at Arts Admin in London as part of the inaugural Queer Performance MA show, flick, flick, flick, sliiide, pick-up pick-up is a gripping exploration of a group held in an object’s pull. With interludes of unison, the troupe holds you in a forcefield of (il)logic. This is the first performance PerHaps Now will do in the gallery as part of their residency at NCA. On Friday 14th February they will perform a special Valentine's Day performance, featuring a brand-new work developed during the residency. See NCA’s website for full details. Tickets We want this performance to be as accessible as possible, and do not want the cost of tickets to be a barrier. Tickets are priced on a sliding scale and pay as you feel tickets are also available. Please pay what you feel is comfortable for you.
