In this workshop, Sunaina Bhalla will introduce her conceptual art practice and participants will also learn more about the history of block printing, followed by a demonstration of the craft. Block printing is a traditional art form that originated in ancient China, with the earliest known example being the Diamond Sutra from 868 A.D., now housed in the British Museum. This craft spread across regions, with cotton printed fabrics traded in India, Babylon, Indonesia, Malaya, and the Far East, and India’s block printing tradition began in the 12th century, flourishing in the 17th century with Surat, Gujarat, as a key hub.
