Jess Atieno, an Artist-in-Residence with APL and CSRPC, will be sharing her experience and discussing her new body of work at the upcoming event, "Black is the Color of the Cosmos: Artist and Curator Conversation." This exhibition, which takes place at the Washington Park Arts Incubator in Chicago on December 8, 2023, showcases the culminating projects of the 2022-23 cohort of Artists in Residence. 

Atieno's work delves into the exploration of the migrant object and body, intertwining personal and collective historical memory. By utilizing photographs, short films, and various materials, she raises thought-provoking questions surrounding representation, history, and photographic capture. Her practice is deeply rooted in inquiries about place, home, and dispossession, all viewed through the lens of the post-colonial. 

Drawing on her own experiences as a Kenyan artist studying in the United States, Atieno has become acutely aware of the complex dynamics of belonging and the impact of a colonial past. Her work engages with historical artifacts such as photographs, maps, and documents, transforming them into prints, installations, and tapestries. Through these art forms, Atieno seeks to challenge conventional notions of representation within post-colonial contexts and explore the transformative power of place.

As the founder of the Nairobi Print Project and an alum of the Asiko Art School, Atieno's work has been exhibited in various countries, including Kenya, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Angola, Austria, Germany, Ivory Coast, and the United States. The Artists-in-Residence program, supported by Arts + Public Life and the Center for the Study of Race, Politics & Culture, aims to provide opportunities for underrepresented artists in Chicago and the national arts scene. This ten-month paid residency program offers space, materials, stipends, and access to academic and research resources.

Absolutely incredible experience!From the moment you enter, you&#39;re immersed in the history and interactive exhibits. The elevator ride adds to the anticipation. Once at the top, the panoramic views are breathtaking. We splurged on the drinks package, and they certainly didn&#39;t disappoint.
