Join author and historian Marty Podskoch from East Hampton for a presentation on his new book, "Connecticut Civilian Conservation Corps Camps: History, Memories and Legacy." This informative event will take place at the Beekley Community Library in New Hartford on December 2, 2023. 

Commencing its 90th anniversary, the founding of the Civilian Conservation Corps on March 31, 1933, marked a significant milestone in American history. President Franklin D. Roosevelt's "New Deal" program aimed to alleviate the poverty and unemployment caused by the Great Depression. Under the supervision of the US Army, each camp housed approximately 200 men aged 18-25, with families on relief, who enrolled for six months of meaningful work. These dedicated individuals toiled for 40 hours per week, earning $30 per month. The government would send $25 back home, while the boys received $5 as spending money. 

The young men were provided with essential provisions, including quality food, uniforms, shelter, and medical care. Initially residing in tents, they eventually enjoyed more comfortable wooden buildings. Their labor encompassed the construction of trails, roads, campsites, and dams. They also engaged in activities such as fish stocking, maintaining fire towers and observer's cabins, and establishing telephone lines. Furthermore, they valiantly fought fires and contributed to reforestation by planting millions of trees. 

Ultimately, the Civilian Conservation Corps disbanded in 1942 due to the pressing need for men during World War II. Following the presentation, Marty will offer his new book for sale and signing, along with his other captivating works. These include eleven books on the Catskills, Adirondack mountains, and two newly released travel books, "Connecticut 169 Club: Your Passport and Guide to Exploring Connecticut" and "Rhode Island 39 Club".
