Why were people in medieval Britain so fascinated by ghosts and spirits? And what did these stories really mean? With Q&A. Medieval writings are full of ghosts, demons, and strange beings said to haunt forests, rivers, and villages. These stories weren’t just for entertainment. They helped people make sense of death, fear, and the unknown. They also reflected tensions between old pagan beliefs and newer Christian ideas, as well as the risks of life beyond the safety of the village. In this talk, we’ll explore how supernatural stories shaped the way people understood their world, and how they were used to support or challenge religious and social authority. Looking back at these beliefs helps us see how fear and storytelling have always been part of human life. Doors open at 7pm , talk starts at 7:30pm - come down early to grab a good seat! Follow us on IG @seedtalks  Speaker Bio:  Dr Jennifer Farrell is a lecturer in the Department of Archaeology and History at the University of Exeter, specialising in the medieval supernatural. Her research focuses on topics including prophecy, magic, demons, and Arthurian literature. She studies how supernatural beliefs shaped culture and understanding in Western Europe during the high and late Middle Ages (c. 1000–1500). She has published work on medieval prophecy and fairies, exploring their role in history and literature. She is currently working on a book on Geoffrey of Monmouth and the origins of the Arthurian legends. These evenings are deliberately kept intimate, fostering the kind of open and honest conversation rarely found in larger settings. Guests leave not only inspired but genuinely connected to the speaker, to one another, and to the enduring spirit of phenomenal women everywhere. On the pulse: a series of dialogues with some of the country’s most inspiring women. The next event in the series takes place on Thursday, 9th July , and we are delighted to welcome our guest speaker: Helen Godwin Mayor of the West of England: Elected in May 2025, she has started a new chapter for the region. Helen was born in the West, grew up and is raising her family there, and has worked as a local councillor and in business. Helen's priorities are reliable transport, affordable homes, and green jobs. Since May, the West has seen free summer bus travel for children, a £5m Youth Guarantee launched, and £752m for transport secured. A new regional Growth Strategy aims to create 72,000 jobs over ten years, alongside a new Child Poverty Action Plan.
