The Hallie Ford School of Graduate Studies and the MFA in Applied Craft+Design are excited to present Dee Clements of Studio Herron at the upcoming Graduate Lecture Series. Dee Clements is the Founder, Creative Director, and Designer of Studio Herron, a design studio that specializes in textiles, furniture, and objects combining artistic processes and traditional craft techniques. With a deep appreciation for materials and craft, Dee holds an MFA in 3D Design from Cranbrook Academy of Art and a BFA in Fiber and Materials Studies and Sculpture from The School of The Art Institute of Chicago.

Dee's work at Studio Herron explores the connections between history, craft, culture, materials, and objects. Her practice delves into the examination of women's roles in craft and design, shedding light on their unseen labor and the societal expectations placed upon them. Through her woven vessels, Dee creates metaphorical representations of the historically gendered "Women's Work," drawing inspiration from the ancient craft of basketry and the symbolism of the Paleolithic stone-carved Venus Figurines.

By looking back at the lineage of craft and patriarchy, Dee finds inspiration for her forward-thinking practice. She reflects on the establishment of patriarchy during the Neoleolithic-early Bronze Age and the Code of Hammurabi, which heavily influenced societies for thousands of years. This code reinforced the notion of women as property and restricted their rights, leading to the subjugation of women's crafts and relegating them to domestic duties.

Through her work, Dee celebrates and honors the significance of women's craft, using hand-dyed materials in vibrant colors and incorporating elements of painting and ceramics. Her large sculptural forms, created through the ancient craft of weaving, push the boundaries of the material and pay homage to the rich lineage of this art form.
