Velasco's landscapes beautifully depict the complex colonial histories and transformative industrialization of Mexico. Despite his prominence in Mexico, Velasco's work remains lesser-known abroad. In 2025, the National Gallery will hold its first-ever exhibition on a Latin American artist, dedicated to Velasco's art. This lecture will delve into Velasco's relationship with his national history, his critical reception, and the lasting impact of his paintings. The lecture will be presented by Daniel Sobrino Ralston, the CEEH Associate Curator of Spanish Paintings at the National Gallery. Ralston's expertise spans the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries, with a specific focus on the consolidation of the Spanish school in the 1860s and 1870s.
