~ Songs of Farewell - Parry Allegri's Miserere is surely among the most (justifiably) famous pieces of choral music. Its simplicity and elegant beauty is brought starkly to life in this arrangement by Ben Byram Wigfield, which tracks the evolution of the piece through the centuries. It is complimented by James MacMillan's setting of the same words, which is no less beautiful, and contrasted with a short motet by Allegri's contemporary, the murderously insane Carlo Gesualdo. Tristis est Anima Mea by 19th-century French composer Francis Poulenc is uncomfortably close in musical language to Gesualdo...! And finally Parry's Songs of Farewell - a heart-rending lament to the tragedy of the First World War, in which countless lives were pointlessly lost and maimed, including his friends Butterworth (killed), Bliss (wounded), Gurney (gassed). Parry felt the tragedy of the War very personally, yet while these six songs undoubtedly reflect that pain, there remains always a glimmer of hope.
