SDMA 100 Years | The San Diego Museum of Art

The San Diego Union-Tribute Museum of Art (SDMA) 100 Years exhibition showcases photographs, documents, and videos documenting key moments in the museum's history of interaction with the community, demonstrating its development over decades amidst global upheaval. The exhibition reviews the museum's evolution: from its birth at the 1915 Panama-California Exposition, to its grand opening in 1926, its conversion into a naval hospital during World War II, the modernization of Balboa Park in the 1960s and 70s, the groundbreaking exhibitions of the 1980s and 90s, the transformation at the turn of the millennium, and a vision for the next century.

Local Visions: Reimagining the Façade | The San Diego Museum of Art

This exhibition celebrates the creativity and vision of artists from across the region, each offering a unique perspective on the San Diego Museum of Art's iconic Spanish Colonial Revival facade. As part of the museum's centennial celebrations, the "Local Perspectives" exhibition stemmed from an open call for local artists to reimagine the museum's landmark exterior from a contemporary perspective. The call received an enthusiastic response, yielding numerous inspiring submissions that showcased the artistic talent of our community. Ultimately, we selected a series of works to reflect the diversity of artistic approaches and the shared emotional connection artists have with this historic building.

Graciela Iturbide: Photographs from Colecciones Fundación MAPFRE | The San Diego Museum of Art

Graciela Iturbide (Mexican, born in 1942) is arguably Latin America's most renowned living photographer. For fifty years, she has captured images of Mexico and beyond with a unique, poetic perspective. This exhibition will showcase her most representative works, primarily taken in Mexico, but also including pieces from Italy, India, Panama, and the United States. For Iturbide, photography is an exploration, stemming from her profound curiosity about different lifestyles—even within Mexico itself—and her exploration of how history, tradition, and ritual shape contemporary experiences.

Cafés and Cabarets: The Spectacular Art of Toulouse-Lautrec | The San Diego Museum of Art

In 1987, the San Diego Museum of Art received a valuable donation from the Baldwin Foundation, comprising over one hundred paintings, drawings, and prints. The foundation was then managed by Maruja Baldwin Hodges. The donation came from the collection of Baldwin M. Baldwin, a connoisseur of Toulouse-Lautrec art whose collection was among the world's largest and was first exhibited at the San Diego Museum of Art in 1972. To celebrate this donation and the museum's centenary, this exhibition will feature approximately fifty works from the museum's Toulouse-Lautrec collection.
