Join the Montclair State University Galleries in celebrating the opening of three exciting fall exhibitions this year. The Backend, Case Studies: Joseph Parra – the edge of flesh and blood, and Sound Booth – Brian Oakes are all part of the Montclair State University Galleries Fall 2023 exhibition lineup. This event is free and open to the public.

The Backend is a collective exhibition featuring the works of 13 contemporary artists. These artists explore the protocols and agreements that shape our society and how we participate within it. Artists such as Merlin Carpenter, Maia Chao, and Josephine Devanbu, among others, will showcase their thought-provoking pieces in the George Segal Gallery.

Sound Booth, a new sound installation series, will be located at the entrance of the Segal Gallery. Brian Oakes will be the first artist to present his work in this series, creating an immersive environment for deep listening. Through a combination of sculpture, sound, and lighting, Oakes aims to captivate visitors with his unique artistic vision.

In addition to these exhibitions, the Alexander Kasser Theater will showcase Case Studies 3: Joseph Parra – the edge of flesh and blood. This solo exhibition delves into the consequences of seeking validation, inspiration, and intimacy through digital images. Curated by Jesse Bandler Firestone, this exhibition challenges viewers to question how desire is transformed when experienced through screens.

At 6 p.m., Director Megan C. Austin and Curator Jesse Bandler Firestone will deliver their remarks.
