Details

Pillars of the Valley: Poignant and Powerful Public Art by Damon Davis is an impressive art installation located in St. Louis' Mill Creek Valley. This significant project pays tribute to the history and community of the once-thriving predominantly Black neighborhood that was demolished for "urban renewal" in the late 1950s. Damon Davis, a nationally acclaimed artist and East St. Louis native, has created a sculptural monument that captures the essence of Mill Creek Valley's past and its place in the city's present and future. To provide an enlightening experience, there will be a guided tour led by Emma Klues, Vice President of Communications & Outreach at Great Rivers Greenway. During the tour, visitors will learn about the project's significance, history, landscaping, the artist's intent, civic engagement, and interviews with past residents. The Pillars of the Valley is a collaboration between CITYPARK SC, Great Rivers Greenway, and the City of St. Louis. This art installation is part of the transformative Brickline Greenway, a network of paths and places designed to enhance the St. Louis region. To gain further insight into the project, viewers can watch a video featuring the artist's own words. For more information about the Pillars of the Valley, including the event details and reservation information, visit the official website. The event is free, but reservations are encouraged. Walk-ins are welcome based on availability. Parking is conveniently available at the CITY Parking Garage located at 1950 Olive Street, with street parking as an alternative option. The Pillars of the Valley event is organized by the Art Collaborative, a dynamic and interactive forum aimed at bringing art to the people and fostering connections within the creative community. Led by Cynthia Correll and Judith Shaw, the Art Collaborative seeks to showcase the art landscape in the region by facilitating hands-on, immersive experiences and encouraging the exchange of ideas and resources among artists and art enthusiasts. Don't miss this opportunity to witness the powerful public art created by Damon Davis and explore the rich history of St. Louis' Mill Creek Valley.
