Join us for an installment of the Research + Practice conversation series featuring two distinguished artists, Ama BE and Maria del Carmen Montoya. Ama BE, the Summer Artist Organizer at Washington Project for the Arts and GWU Visiting Scholar, has been conducting extensive research on the agricultural practices of first-generation Africans living in the DC area. Through interviews with local African immigrants, Ama has collected their stories about food, farming, and medicine, exploring how they have adapted traditional sacred practices since immigrating to this region. These captivating narratives are then translated into sculptural pieces that come to life in the gallery space, evolving throughout her residency.
Maria del Carmen Montoya, an Artist and Associate Professor of Sculpture and Spatial Practices at GWU, operates at the intersection of art and social activism. Her work challenges norms, disrupts power hierarchies, and catalyzes social change through dialogic and collaborative practices. Montoya's artistic journey has taken her across Latin America, where she has served as an advocate for battered women in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, and facilitated communal processes of making meaning.
