Join me for an introduction to oil painting, perfect for beginners in painting, in oils, or for those wanting to expand their practice. Over two days, you’ll learn step-by-step techniques to create a beautiful still life painting, focusing on flowers in glass. My aim is to make oil painting feel approachable and rewarding, whether you’re completely new or looking to build your skills. What to ExpectA guided, step-by-step process to help you complete your own paintingShort demonstrations throughout the dayLearning the basics of palette use, mediums, and brush techniquesAn introduction to the sight-size method, a fantastic technique for improving accuracy and confidence in your paintingA still life setup similar to my own studio approach, allowing you to practice effectively at homeWhat You’ll NeedBrushes: At least four brushes (sizes 0, 2, and 4), suitable for oil painting. I recommend long flat brushes.
Canvas/Board: One 20x25cm canvas or board, ready for oil paint. Avoid cheap canvases, as they can absorb too much paint. Recommended option: Belle Arti Linen 63 540 Oil Primed Extra Fine Grain 24x30cm
Palette: A standard palette for mixing paint. Oil paints, mediums, and easels will be provided. PLEASE NOTE:There are two unavoidable aspects of this course: Flowers – While I aim to provide peonies or hydrangeas for this class, availability may vary. The flowers used will depend on what is accessible at the time. I will do my best, but I cannot guarantee specific blooms. (If anyone knows a way to ensure this, I would be grateful!)Venue & Schedule – We are painting at Ledbury Community Hub, which has great lighting and facilities. On Sundays, the Hub hosts a community lunch from 12–1 PM, so we will take a break during this time. To make up for this, I have added an extra half-hour to each day. You’re welcome to join the lunch—it’s a lovely, welcoming experience.Course DetailsDates: 10 AM – 4:30 PM (includes two tea breaks and a lunch break)
