Dr. Marty Otañez, Chair and Associate Professor in the Anthropology Department at the University of Colorado Denver, will be presenting findings from a recent study on the experiences of BIPOC individuals with psilocybe mushrooms. This study, conducted at CU Denver, sheds light on the lived experiences and concerns of people of color and low-income individuals regarding the legalization of psilocybe mushrooms in Colorado.
During the presentation, attendees will have the opportunity to learn about the study findings through short video interviews with research participants. These interviews touch on various themes, including psychedelic harm reduction, microdosing for stress relief, cultivation of medicinal mushrooms, medicalization, and corporatization. Additionally, the event will feature shroom-related storytelling and an opportunity for audience members to share their own personal psychedelic encounters.
Dr. Otañez is an expert in the field, with a focus on psilocybin use among people of color in Colorado and the promotion of corporate accountability in the global psychedelic sector. In collaboration with co-author Aaraon Diaz from Mexico City, Dr. Otañez will be publishing the first volume in a four-volume book series titled "Art-Based Narratives as Resources to End Cannabis Stigmatization in North America" in Fall 2023.
This event, supported by the Source Research Foundation, aims to expand the scope of psychedelic research in Colorado and increase policymakers' accountability by exploring BIPOC responses to Colorado's legal psilocybin sector. It will take place on October 18, 2023, at the Mercury Cafe in Denver. Admission is free.
