It is the capital of the Nakhon Si Thammarat Province and District and is a city located in southern Thailand. It is the most ancient city in Thailand and has many buildings and ruins that have historical importance. It was previously known as the Nakhon Si Thammarat Kingdom or the Kingdom of Ligor to European merchants until it was fully absorbed into Siam by altering it into a month after which it became a provincial capital in 1932 when the month on the system was abolished.

What to do
The coastal city is full of eclectic charms and teeming with the ancient site and picturesque nature spots. In the ancient temple of Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan or Wat Phra Mahathat, there is an enormous Sri Lankan-style stupa namely Phra Borommathat Chedi, translated loosely into the Great Noble Relics Stupa. This is one of the holiest temples of Thailand is thus one of the main features of the city. There is also the Hindu Giant Swing, and the shrines of the Hindu Gods Shiva and Vishnu called Ho Phra Isuan and Ho Phra Narai respectively. The ancient art of shadow puppetry through Nang Talungs, i.e., small shadow puppets are carved from cow skins, can be appreciated at Suchart Subsin’s Nang Talung Museum. A bot trip at Khanom Beach in Hat Khanom-Mu Koh Thale Tai National Park is an amazing experience as you also get to interact with pink Irrawaddy dolphins. There is also Kiriwong Village that gained its fame for having Thailand’s purest ozone is the best place for nature lovers with its clear streams and breathtaking greenery.

What to eat

Nakhom is also famous for its Khanom jeen, which is fresh sticky rice noodles that are served alongside a curry of choosing, hard boil eggs, and pickled and fresh vegetables. There are several places that specialize in this genre across town near Wat Phra Mahathat on Phan Yom Road. There are also a lot of options for seafood on Neramit Road that serve typical Thai dishes.
