Destination & Booking Info

Most visitors to China need a visa, but several visa-free options cover short trips. Citizens of about 50 countries, including the US, UK, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Japan, South Korea and Singapore, can enter visa-free for up to 30 days for tourism, business, family visits, conferences or study tours; multiple entries are allowed as long as each stay stays under 30 days. A 24-hour visa-free transit applies to almost all foreign travelers passing through China to a third destination by plane, ship or train, as long as they stay within the port of entry.

Your passport must be an ordinary (regular) passport valid for at least the intended stay, and at least 3 months beyond arrival for the 240-hour transit. Carry round-trip tickets, accommodation reservations and your itinerary, and note that visa-free policies are updated frequently and subject to change.

All foreign nationals entering mainland China by air, land or sea must submit the China Digital Arrival Card (CDAC) before border control, even when travelling visa-free. You can complete it up to 72 hours before arrival. Direct 24-hour transit passengers staying inside the restricted transit area, same-vessel cruise passengers, foreign crew and E-channel registrants are exempt.

On entry, non-residents can bring in duty-free personal items worth up to RMB 2,000, alcohol up to 1,500 ml (at least 12% ABV) and cigarettes up to 400 sticks, or 100 cigars, or 500 g of tobacco. Anything beyond these limits must be declared and taxed. You can carry up to RMB 20,000 in cash, and foreign currency of US$5,000 or more must be declared on entry and exit. Meat, milk, eggs, fresh fruit, prescription drugs, drones and radio transmitters go through the Red Channel for mandatory declaration.

Chinese banks give better exchange rates than airport counters, and ATMs accept foreign cards (tell your bank before you travel). For tax refunds, spend over CNY 200 at stores displaying a Tax-Free sign, keep the receipts, and get the forms stamped at customs before departure.
