Denpasar, the capital of Bali is also the main gateway to the beautiful island. The name is taken from two Balinese words- “den” and “Pasar” which means north and market. The name refers to the origin of the city which was as a market town. At that site now is the Kumbasari Market, in the north part of the present city. Denpasar attracts the tourist with its beautiful mix of Balinese and modern culture. The city is a major hub that connects many tourist places of Bali such as the cities in the Lesser Sunda Islands. 

Tip: Denpasar experiences a tropical wet and dry climate. It has humid and hot weather throughout the year. The best months to visit are from December to January when the weather is cooler. 

Getting to Denpasar

Denpasar is served by Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS). The international airport is known as Gusti Ngurah Rai International airport named after Gusti Ngurah Rai, a national hero of Bali. The airport is located in Tuban roughly 15 km from Denpasar and is the second-busiest airport in the country.

Denpasar was originally a market town. The name of the city also refers to that.
