Before you land, you must submit the China Digital Arrival Card (CDAC) online, even if you are travelling visa-free. You can complete it up to 72 hours (3 days) before arrival through the official NIA channels: the NIA 12367 app, or the WeChat and Alipay mini-programs. China customs rules limit alcohol to 1,500 ml (at 12% or stronger) and cigarettes to 400 sticks (or 100 cigars / 500 g of tobacco); anything beyond those limits must be declared and taxed. You can carry up to RMB 20,000 (about US$2,970) in cash, and foreign currency of US$5,000 or more must be declared. Non-Chinese residents can bring personal items worth up to RMB 2,000 (about US$300) duty-free.

China is largely cashless, with Alipay and WeChat Pay dominating everyday payments. For the best exchange rates, use major banks such as Bank of China, ICBC, China Construction Bank and Agricultural Bank of China, which usually open Monday to Friday 9:00-17:00; you will need your passport for any exchange. Airport exchange counters and hotel services offer worse rates, so keep them for emergencies.
