The Shanghai Maglev is the world's first commercial magnetic levitation line. It is designed for a top speed of 431 km/h and in regular service runs at 300 km/h, covering the 30 km from Pudong Airport to Longyang Road in about 8 minutes. A one-way ticket costs CNY 50 (~US$7), and a same-day airline ticket brings a 20% discount (CNY 40). Pudong has two main terminals and two satellite concourses linked by free shuttles and automated trains. Visa & Entry

Travelers from many countries can enter China without a visa. As of early 2026, citizens of about 50 countries, including the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and South Korea, get 30-day visa-free entry with an ordinary passport for business, tourism, family visits, exchange visits and transit. The list does not include the United States, so US passport holders need a visa for a regular visit. Singapore citizens are also visa-exempt for short visits of up to 30 days for tourism and business.

For those passing through, the 240-hour visa-free transit policy covers citizens of 55 countries, including the US, at 60 ports across 24 provinces, including Shanghai. This gives up to 10 days for travelers continuing to a third destination.

All foreign nationals entering mainland China must submit the China Digital Arrival Card (CDAC) online before passing border control, even when traveling under a visa-free policy. You can complete it up to 72 hours (3 days) before arrival. Passengers on a direct 24-hour transit who stay airside are exempt.

Currency & Customs

On entry, the carry-on limit for Chinese yuan (RMB) is RMB 20,000, and foreign currency of US$5,000 or more must be declared. Non-Chinese residents temporarily staying in China have a duty-free allowance of up to RMB 2,000 for items that remain in the country; Chinese residents returning from overseas get up to RMB 5,000. Adults may bring in no more than 1,500ml of alcohol (12% or higher) and no more than 400 cigarettes (or 100 cigars, or 500g of tobacco); excess quantities must be declared and taxed.

Items that require mandatory declaration include meat, milk, eggs, bird's nests and fresh fruit; medicines; and radio transmitters, communication devices and drones.
