Top things to do in Amsterdam-2026

TOP 1
Van Gogh Museum
Van Gogh Museum
4.8/5 · 1,689 review
taCommentInfo-imageBased on 65,743 review
Highlights:

The museum houses over 200 of Van Gogh's classic oil paintings, 580 sketches, 4 sketchbooks, and approximately 750 letters he wrote to his brother Theo.

Revisit the arduous journey of this master artist's lifelong pursuit of painting techniques and his passion for art and literature.

The old and new buildings each have their own distinctive features, yet blend together seamlessly.

The old building was completed and opened to the public in 1973, designed by Dutch De Stijl architect Gerrit Rietveld. The new building, designed by a Japanese architect, was completed in 1999 and is primarily used for temporary exhibitions.

The first-floor exhibition hall, titled "Heart-to-Heart with the Great Artist Van Gogh," guides visitors through the artist's lifelong dedication to painting mastery via a series of works and archival materials. The second floor houses Van Gogh's creations from 1883–1889, while the third floor displays his correspondence with his brother Theo. The fourth floor showcases works Van Gogh produced during lucid intervals between recurrent mental health episodes from 1889–1890.

Limited-time Special Exhibition | Van Gogh and the Roulin Family – Finally Reunited

Oct 3, 2025–Jan 11, 2026

This exhibition showcases an extraordinary series of portraits Vincent van Gogh created for Joseph and his family. Van Gogh painted multiple portraits of each family member. These artworks were later sold and dispersed across the globe. Thanks to loans from major museums in the Netherlands and internationally, most of these portraits are now reunited. The special exhibition focuses on this significant collection of works produced during van Gogh's turbulent period in Arles, southern France (1888–1889).

Van Gogh had grand ambitions for his portrait paintings. He greatly admired the portraits by 17th-century artists Frans Hals and Rembrandt, believing these masters were unparalleled in depicting both people and their era.

In addition to depicting the characters' personalities, Van Gogh also sought to showcase the modern era he lived in through his paintings. He hoped this would prove himself as an avant-garde artist.
