How to Get around Shanghai - 6 Ways Overview

Shanghai Pudong Airport(PVG) Shuttle City Bus, Routes, Fares
I’ve lived in Shanghai for more than five years, long enough to figure out the most convenient ways to get around. To sum it up: Getting around with Shanghai metro for daily trips and commute, taxis/buses for flexibility, shared bikes for short trips, and rental cars for group trips.
- The Shanghai metro is my first choice for almost all daily trips, such as commuting to work or meeting friends.
- Taxis and buses are my second choice and are perfect for when my destination is not near the subway station.
- Bike-sharing is great for short trips, especially to the grocery store at Hema Fresh, ALDI or Sam ' s Club.
- When we want to visit multiple attractions at once, driving or renting a car is only suitable for group trips to nearby cities (Suzhou, Hangzhou).
Shanghai Metro – Best Choice for Getting Around

If I have to pick the No.1 travel method in Shanghai, it’s definitely Shanghai metro. I rely on the metro for 80% of my daily trips It covers every region, has more than 20 lines, trains run frequently (2-5 minutes during peak hours, 5-10 minutes during off-peak hours), and you will never get stuck in traffic.

How to pay
Alipay or Weixin Pay is the easiest choice. Open the transportation section, select Shanghai, activate the Metro Metropolis QR Code, scan it at the station gate, your fare will be automatically deducted. You can also purchase a physical ticket through the station machine (English interface is available) or obtain a public transportation card (20 CNY/US$2.88 deposit, fully refundable) for seamless use on all public transportation.
Fares
Fares are calculated by distance: 3 CNY (US$0.43) for the first 6 kilometers, 1 CNY (US$0.14) for every additional 10 kilometers within 30 kilometers, and 1 CNY (US$0.14) for every additional 15 kilometers above 30 kilometers. Most downtown tours cost only 3-7 CNY (0.43 - 1.01 USD).
Transfers
All line transfers take place within the pay station area, so you don't have to check out or pay again. Just follow the bilingual line number signs (Chinese and English), most transfers are just a 2-5 minute walk. A short note: If you need to transfer at a designated station, you will need to re-purchase a one-way ticket, and the public transportation card has a 30-minute continuous pricing window.
Shanghai Taxis and Buses – My Second Choice in Shanghai

After the metro, taxis and buses are what I use most when the metro isn’t convenient. They’re not as fast during rush hour, but they’re far more flexible for destinations off the metro line. I switch between them based on where I’m going, and here’s the practical details for both:
Taxis – Great for Haste or Group Travel
I take taxis a lot when I’m in a hurry or traveling with friends. They’re affordable, especially when splitting the cost — it’s often cheaper than everyone taking the metro separately. You don’t need the Didi app to book a taxi (a common misconception) — Alipay and WeChat Pay are more than enough for easy booking.
- 2026 Fares: Traditional taxis start at 14 CNY ($2.02) for the first 3km; electric taxis start at 16 CNY ($2.31) for the same distance. After 3km, it’s 2.7 CNY ($0.39) per additional km, and trips over 15km cost an extra 50% for the distance beyond (4.05 CNY/$0.58 per km). There’s a 30% night surcharge from 11 PM to 5 AM.
- How to book: On Alipay, go to the Transport section, plan your route, and click the Taxi tab to book directly. On WeChat Pay, search for the Didi mini-program, enter your destination, and book there. You can see the estimated fare and arrival time before confirming, which is really helpful. I recommend pre-booking via Gaode Map or Baidu Map during peak hours to avoid waiting on the street.
Buses – Ideal for Neighborhood Trips
Buses are slower than the metro because they stop at every stop and wait for traffic lights, but they have far more stops than the metro — you’ll find a bus stop near almost every residential community. I use buses most for trips to nearby parks or small neighborhood shops that aren’t close to a metro station.
- Route planning: Google Maps doesn’t work in China, so use Gaode Map (Amap) or Baidu Map — both have English versions. They’ll show you the exact route, which bus to take, boarding and alighting stops, and even the arrival time down to the second, including waits at traffic lights. They’re surprisingly precise with timing.
- Fares and payment: Bus fares are cheap, usually around 2 CNY ($0.29) per ride. You can pay with the same Alipay/WeChat Pay QR code or Public Transport Card you use for the metro — no need to carry cash.
See all attractions
Shanghai Shared Bikes – Perfect for Short Trips
Bike Share Oversupply in China
I only use shared bikes for 1–3km trips, mostly when I’m going grocery shopping. Hema Fresh, ALDI and Sam’s Club are often 1–3km from the nearest metro — too far to walk, too close for a taxi/bus, so bikes are perfect.
- Prices: Hello Bike (the blue ones) and Didi Bike (the green ones) both cost 1.5 CNY ($0.22) for the first 15 minutes, then 1 CNY ($0.14) for every additional 15 minutes. You can scan them directly with Alipay, so there’s no need to download extra apps.
- Pro tip: Skip Meituan Bike (the yellow ones) unless you already use the Meituan app. It’s not worth downloading an extra app just for a shared bike.
Shanghai Driving and Car Rental – for Group Trips to Nearby Cities

Shanghai Driving and Car Rental – for Group Trips to Nearby Cities
I never drive for daily use, parking in Shanghai is a nightmare for me. Parking is limited in most city centres and costs are rising fast. But when I travel with friends to nearby cities like Suzhou and Hangzhou and want to visit multiple attractions at once, driving or renting a car is the most flexible option.
- Parking fees in Shanghai: 10-20 CNY ($1.44-$2.88) per hour for urban parking, 5-10 CNY ($0.72-$1.44) per hour for suburban parking. Even a few hours of parking can become expensive, which is why I avoid driving to the city center.
- Useful tip for group travel: When booking a hotel on Trip.com, you can filter the results through "Free Parking". Many hotels in Suzhou and Hangzhou provide free parking services to guests, completely solving the parking problem. This is a small detail, but it makes a huge difference.
- Car rental: I recommend using Trip. com Car Rental-They have an 8% discount in 2026, and their customer service is excellent (with English support). You need a valid driver's license (an international driver's license is also available) and you can get on and off at the airport or high-speed rail station, which is very convenient. It is ideal for groups of 3 or 4 people because cost-sharing makes it affordable.
China Transport Apps for Getting Around Shanghai

You don't need a bunch of apps, just 4 apps that cover everything. These are what I use every day and they are all you need to travel smoothly:
- Amap/Baidu Maps: These are reliable China map apps in Shanghai (Google Maps doesn't work here). Both are available in English and can plan subway, bus and taxi routes, display real-time transportation, book taxis, check parking fees, and tell you when the next bus or subway will arrive. I use Gaode maps most often, but Baidu maps are just as good.
- Alipay: This is a one-stop app for all transportation payments. You can use it to get subway and bus QR codes, book taxis, pay for shared bicycles, and even pay parking fees. It is more humane than Weixin Pay travel, which is why I like it better.
- Meituan: For travelers, Meituan is ideal for finding nearby restaurants (with authentic user reviews), buying movie tickets and renting Meituan bicycles (yellow bicycles). I only use it occasionally, but it's useful if you live in Shanghai for a few days.
- Trip.com: This is my first choice for booking high-speed rail tickets, flights, hotels and car rentals. They receive a 10% discount from hotels in 2026, which is the hotel's free parking filter and supports high-speed rail passport bookings-perfect for travelers.
How to Get around Shanghai - Airport Transportation

Shanghai Pudong Airport(PVG) Transfers, Domestic, International
Shanghai has 2 airports: Hongqiao International Airport (SHA) and Pudong International Airport (PVG). Shanghai is closer to the city center, which is why I prefer domestic flights. PVG is farther away, but there are more international flights.

People's Square Area Shanghai|0.54km from city center
Location: Great, right on Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street, very convenient for guests to explore on their own without needing to be guided all day.
Ambiance: It seems to be an older hotel with a rather fancy, old-fashioned decor, not very modern.
Service: It would be better if the lobby had a more formal and free waiting area for guests.
Courier service convenience: Yes, there's a dedicated spot for packages, which was handy as I sent out many samples. Picking them up was quite easy.
There are too few places to work on the first floor, only two tables, and one was already reserved. Very limited options, and the other seating wasn't suitable for laptop use.
The room is better suited for working, though.From$123

Really loved the experience in this hotel!
Location is awesome, just cross one street and you are on your way to explore Nanjing Road where all the popular sports brands (think Adidas and Nike..just opposite one another), good food and lifestyle products are. People's Park is also a short walk away as with the hop on hop off bus stops.
No complains about cleanliness, everyday when I return the room is neat and tidy, no dust or watermarks to complain about.
The overall service is excellent, always service with a smile, very helpful and very efficient. One of staff by the name of Koi kindly helped me with late check out and it was done within minutes, no questions asked.
Breakfast buffet is excellent but with all the good food around, once is sufficient.

Stayed one night at the Garden Hotel during the ***** New Year. Usually, it's around 600-700 RMB, but for CNY it was nearly 1000 RMB due to the premium.
I wanted to experience staying in a historic building in Shanghai, and the Garden Hotel seems to be a relatively good value for money. The location is excellent; it has a large garden in such a prime area. You can easily walk to Huaihai Road and Fuxing Road.
The service was also superb. It's rare to ask for one item from room service and have them bring a whole bunch of things [crying emoji], I was pleasantly surprised, especially since the hotel was fully booked during the ***** New Year. Thumbs up!
Aside from the room being a bit small and dated, the toilet was the common smart type. Breakfast was Japanese style, which I wasn't quite used to. Even with a full house during CNY, there was a queue, but the efficiency was high, and you didn't have to wait long.
Considering the location and service, I would likely choose this hotel again next time.From$133

Train Station Area Shanghai|2.4km from city center
This was my first time staying at this hotel, and here's a summary of the pros:
1. The hotel's location is incredibly convenient. You can step right out and catch Metro Lines 1, 3, or 4, and be in the bustling city center within a few stops. If you have heavy luggage, you can use the accessible elevator across the street at the express hotel to enter and exit the station.
2. The hotel is close to Shanghai Railway Station, with many fast-food restaurants and convenience stores nearby, making shopping and quick meals very easy.
However, there were also some drawbacks:
1. The room cleaning was not thorough enough, especially the bedside table which had a noticeable layer of dust. It felt quite unpleasant.
2. I encountered cleaning staff in the elevator, management on my floor, and restaurant staff, but none of them greeted me. The service lacked basic courtesy.
3. The restaurant is located in the innermost part of the first floor, which already has poor natural light, and the lighting during meals was also dim, which negatively impacted the dining experience.
4. Restaurant management seemed lax; they didn't discourage guests from dining in room slippers or even bathrobes.
5. During breakfast, items like cheese and ham were placed on the same platter as fruit, which was an illogical arrangement. Getting items like corn required reaching over nine condiment dishes, which was both inconvenient and unhygienic.
Overall, my experience during this stay was not very satisfactory.From$100

The hotel was easy enough to find for a hotel the has a reception on the 4th floor and no signage out front. The location is prime for access to the pedestrian road. Lots of sightseeing and shopping in this area. Short drive to all the key tourist hotspots. Beds were comfortable, staff were great to foreigners like us, breakfast was fine. The only thing of notes was we had no luck using the dryers and resorted to hanging out our clothes in our room. But this is a minor issue and may be operator error. Jing'an District/West Nanjing Road Shanghai|0.85km from city center
The hotel’s location is very good. It is about a 5-minute walk to a huge Starbucks, Nanjing West Road, the MRT station, and Wujiang Road, which has several nice bakeries and food options. This made getting around very convenient. There was also a 7-11 just across the road.
However, the Premier Two-Bedroom Suite was disappointing for the price paid. The rooms are rather small, especially the master bedroom, where there was not enough space to place or open any luggage. We had to keep our luggage in the living room instead.
The bathroom, particularly the shower area, looked very dated. The tiles appeared old and there was a musty smell, which was unpleasant. Another inconvenience was that the light switches were only on one side of the bed, making it very inconvenient to switch off the lights from the other side.
The kitchenette was also very small. Cutlery was stored in a drawer above the bin, which was not ideal, and there were no extra plates provided. The tiles looked old with visible cracks, and some of the drawers were faulty. Overall, the room did not feel premium and felt overpriced for what was offered. The hotel rooms clearly need a glow-up to match the Kempinski brand and the rates charged.
Additionally, the reception area was undergoing renovation, with no seating or waiting area. The pick-up and drop-off driveway is very narrow, only a small lane. When loading our luggage, we had to do so very quickly as other cars were waiting. The driveway would benefit from being more spacious.
While the location is excellent, the room condition, layout, and facilities did not meet expectations for a Premier suite.From$184

A tranquil oasis in the heart of the city.
The location is excellent: very close to Yuyuan Garden Metro Station Exit 7. It's also within walking distance to the Bund, Yuyuan Garden, and Jinling East Road Ferry Terminal. The Huangpu River cruise included in the package was fantastic; we enjoyed an hour of beautiful scenery from the boat.
The hotel entrance is beautifully designed, and as soon as we arrived, the doorman proactively helped us with our luggage and escorted us to the elevator.
The room was clean and tidy, with views of both the historic buildings along the Bund and the modern skyline of Lujiazui. It's a peaceful retreat amidst the bustling city, and our whole family slept soundly.
The breakfast offered a great variety of both Chinese and Western dishes, and the made-to-order noodle station was particularly outstanding.
They even offer a sweet soup in the evening, and the mini-bar in the room was well-stocked. The attention to detail is truly impressive. I'll definitely stay here again on my next visit to Shanghai.From$178

Huge thanks to the hotel for arranging my preferred room – it was actually the exact same one I stayed in last Chinese New Year! What a lucky number, 1818. The front desk staff was so attentive and patient. And Xiaoqian, the attendant on the 18th floor, remembered all my habits from last year! She made sure the room was spotless and beautifully arranged every day, making it truly feel like home. The lion dance on the first day of the New Year was a real highlight. Pros:
1. **Location:** Excellent. Situated by the Huangpu River in Lujiazui, it's a short walk to Super Brand Mall, the Riverside Promenade, and the Oriental Pearl TV Tower. It's also close to Metro Line 2, making taxis and ferries easily accessible. IFC is right across the street.
2. **Breakfast Variety:** Offers a wide selection of Chinese and Western dishes, with particularly tasty bread.
Cons:
**Check-in Issues:** The check-in process was far from smooth and frankly, a terrible experience. The doorman service seemed to depend on who was on duty. On the day we arrived, perhaps due to the rain, there was no service at all, though it improved over the following days. We arrived at 4 PM that afternoon, and one of our rooms still wasn't ready. We were told it would take an estimated 20 minutes to clean, but we didn't get into the room until after 5 PM.
**Dated Facilities & Housekeeping:** The hardware feels a bit old. Cleanliness was just okay; for example, the bathtub didn't have a disposable liner. The shampoo and shower gel were in large, communal bottles, and the quality wasn't great.
**Subpar Housekeeping:** Housekeeping only made the beds and changed towels. All our clothes were left piled on the sofa, not neatly folded, and the tables weren't tidied. The bathroom toiletries were also left as is, without any organization.
**Crowded Breakfast Experience:** During peak breakfast times, it gets very busy. Table clearing was incredibly slow, leading to a shortage of available seating.From$148

Our team building was a last-minute decision, and we chose Sun Island because it's relatively close and offers a good variety of activities. The villa having a mahjong table was a nice touch, and there was also a BBQ grill, which we unfortunately didn't prepare food for in advance. It would probably be even better to visit when the weather is warmer and flowers are blooming. Since it was a rushed trip, we didn't get to experience many of the island's attractions, but it seems like a great place to bring kids.
P.S. I recommend bringing your own snacks and drinks, as prices on the island are high.

The Anandi Hotel and Spa Shanghai has a strong focus on wellness and healing. It's a quiet environment, the rooms are comfortable, and the service is good. The buffet at Secret Garden Western Restaurant is indeed delicious, with fresh ingredients and a good variety. However, the hot spring experience is quite average and I wouldn't recommend it – there are few pools, and only three sauna rooms. The hotel is located within a park, so those looking for a room with a view should be aware that most rooms don't offer much in terms of scenery outside the window. Title: Discovering a 'Little Kyoto' in Downtown Shanghai – Private Hot Spring Experience, 10/10!
On a whim, I wanted to find a place to relax in a hot spring, and this hotel's Japanese garden and private onsen caught my eye. It absolutely did not disappoint!
Location: Situated on Meichuan Road in Putuo District, it's a tranquil oasis away from the busiest city center, yet still conveniently located. There's a pedestrian street and shopping mall nearby, making dining and shopping easy. A taxi to Hongqiao transportation hub is also a quick ride.
Ambiance: The moment I stepped through the hotel entrance, I truly felt transported to Kyoto. The Zen rock garden, red maple trees, koi pond, and even adorable rabbits and cats strolling around the courtyard created such a serene atmosphere. Every photo I took looked like it belonged in a magazine.
Room & Private Onsen: We stayed in a Japanese-style king room, and the private hot spring tub, built from volcanic rock inside the room, was the absolute highlight! The hotel thoughtfully provided bath salts and a disposable tub liner. Soaking in it at night, all the day's fatigue just melted away. The bedding was also super comfortable, ensuring a fantastic night's sleep.
Dining: I must praise 'Yakushima,' the Japanese restaurant on the first floor. For dinner, we ordered the seafood hot pot, and the ingredients were incredibly fresh. For breakfast, we chose the Japanese set meal – the nine-compartment presentation was exquisite, and enjoying breakfast with a view of the garden was so delightful. Guests also seem to get a discount on dining, which is a great value.
Service: The attention to detail was excellent. Upon check-in, we received welcome fruits and a handwritten card, and at check-out, they even gave us a small wind chime as a souvenir – a very thoughtful touch.

The hotel room facilities are good, with everything that should be there. The smoking area outside is also very beautiful. The breakfast in the morning is very good, it is self-service, and there are freshly made noodles to eat. If you are thirsty, you can go downstairs at any time to have some drinks and fruits, which are all included in the hotel package. Why the deduction? Like many reviews wrote, the water in the pool here is really too hot. It is the hottest of all the hot springs in Shanghai that I have been to. It feels too hot. I saw that several children could hardly soak in the water for a while. I don’t know why so many people complained. I saw that the management was still saying in the comments that it met the hot spring temperature requirements. What they said is that your water is too hot, and they are giving you suggestions. My stay at The Ritz-Carlton truly brought to life their core motto of 'We are Ladies and Gentlemen serving Ladies and Gentlemen.' A special shout-out to the Guest Recognition department for their professionalism and attentiveness, which made this stay a perfectly warm and respectful journey.
From the moment I arrived, The Ritz-Carlton's 'Three Steps of Service' were seamlessly executed: the doorman's genuine greeting, calling me by name with warmth; the front desk's swift check-in, accurately noting my preferences; and throughout, there was no tedious waiting, just a pleasant feeling of being valued. During my stay, housekeeping proactively prepared my preferred pillow type, and the F&B department thoughtfully noted my dietary restrictions and customized meals. Staff consistently anticipated my needs and responded proactively, truly embodying the brand's commitment to 'fulfilling even the unexpressed wishes of our guests.' My son and I stayed in Shanghai for a few days during the Chinese New Year. I had dined at the Peace Hotel on a previous visit to Shanghai, so this time I decided to stay directly at the Fairmont, booking a king-size bed room. However, check-in took nearly two hours; we arrived at 3 PM and didn't get into our room until almost 5 PM. The room was not very big, and the window overlooked Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street. We could see crowds of people below, and the night view was quite lively. The lobby was beautiful for photos, and breakfast was acceptable, though nothing special and with limited variety. When checking out, I tried to negotiate a late checkout with the front desk, but they would only allow an extra hour, no matter how much I tried to reason with them. Traveled with two kids. Arrived around 3 PM and there were no rooms available, probably due to it being spring break and fully booked. They assigned us a high-floor room and we went out to explore the Bund with the kids. When we came back, they gave us a corner room with a side view of the Oriental Pearl Tower. Although the front desk said it wasn't an 'Oriental Pearl view' and you couldn't see it head-on, it had everything we needed, and both kids were very happy. We slept in until almost 10 AM before going for breakfast. It was still very crowded and we had to queue for a few minutes, but despite the crowds, the food selection was quite comprehensive and the taste was excellent. Around 10:30 AM, staff even went table-to-table reminding guests that they were closing soon and to grab anything else they wanted in advance. All the staff we encountered were very helpful and accommodating, and check-out was also very smooth.From$212

Jing'an District/West Nanjing Road Shanghai|2.97km from city center
The room was quite spacious and very close to the subway station (Jing'an Temple, Exit 12, right next door). The elevator was also fast. The only minor inconveniences were the bathtub, which was a bit awkward, and having to pick up food deliveries from the locker downstairs. Other than that, everything else was good and satisfactory.From$98

Whenever I visit Shanghai, I almost always stay at The Sukhothai, and have for several years now. The hotel boasts an excellent location, making both transport and dining incredibly convenient. The property is impeccably maintained, and the service is consistently gentle and attentive. It's clear that the hotel management team is professional and meticulous, which is precisely why I always choose The Sukhothai. The front desk staff, especially one gentleman, was very polite and upgraded my room, which allowed me to get some great rest. It was quiet and clean. Truly the best choice for staying in Shanghai.From$265

The Bund Area Shanghai|2.48km from city center
The room was very clean. I originally booked one night with a Pearl Tower view and one night with a Bund view. Due to the holiday crowds and limited room availability, I would have had to switch rooms. However, the staff allowed me to extend my stay in the original room, saving me the hassle of moving. This was very thoughtful and convenient. Since I arrived early and the room wasn't ready yet, staff member Lorna thoughtfully arranged for an urgent cleaning. The room was ready quickly, and she was also very caring and attentive to my child. Thank you! The Oriental Pearl Tower view from the room was absolutely fantastic. I had a very pleasant stay this time.From$185

This room type is definitely not suitable for elderly guests or children. As shown in the pictures, the shower and toilet areas are open-plan, making the floor very slippery after a shower, and there's a high risk of falling when using the toilet.
The natural light is excellent, and the room is spacious. However, the minibar items are not complimentary.
The executive lounge, located on the entire 55th floor, was very crowded during the Chinese New Year, but the arrangements were orderly and well-managed. That said, I was quite disappointed with the food quality, both in the afternoon and evening.
Breakfast was decent.
The gym is a highlight, spanning 600 square meters with a wide array of professional equipment.
The location is also a major plus.From$227

This is a true five-star hotel. Though a bit old, it still retains its charm. Parking is convenient, with both above-ground and underground options, but having to input the car number every time you leave could be improved. The room was spacious, and the upgraded river view room was a thoughtful touch. I slept comfortably, the bathroom was large, the shower had great water pressure, and the high-end showerhead with separate functions was very convenient. The bedding was also comfortable, though the TV was a bit small. The floor attendants were enthusiastic and always ready to help. The biggest highlight is the 30th floor rooftop, where you can swim and enjoy the view simultaneously. Soaking in the hot tub while looking at the Oriental Pearl Tower was an amazing experience! The sauna is new, and the presence of an ice pool shows their professionalism (you rarely see this facility in other hotels). Running on the treadmill in the morning while looking at the Oriental Pearl Tower was fantastic! Breakfast offered a wide variety, truly befitting a high-end five-star hotel. My only minor regret was the absence of small wontons, but the sheer abundance of other options definitely deserves praise! All the staff were very warm and well-trained. There's a Shanghai restaurant and a Lanzhou noodle place next to the hotel, and it's very convenient to drive anywhere from here. All in all, I'll likely choose this hotel again when I come back to Pudong. Lucky to have stayed for two nights, keep up the great work!From$126

Amazing, fun-filled memorable stay again at this truly wonderland hotel. This is my second time to stay here and as usual from beginning to end, it is truly exemplary. All the staff we’ve encountered are all friendly possessing excellent customer service. Special mention to the following people whose cheerful smile and welcoming presence really makes this hotel like home — Amara, Vincent, Grace and Ava of front desk as well as Xiao He and Han Lei of Photography. Will come back again on April!From$228

Wujiaochang Commercial Area Shanghai|9.08km from city center
I had a good 4 nights' stay at the Pagoda Wujiaochang. Checkin / checkout was a breeze. The room is impressive - clean and comfortable with anything one may need in a hotel. The bed is soft and comfortable which is essential especially for a business traveller. Takeaway deliveries are sent up to the room by robots. And the location near the stretch of restaurants along Daxue Road and the train metro access nearby is also a plus. Overall, very good experience. Thanks. KKFrom$91

I stayed here for one night. I came here after leaving another hotel that wasn't good. I'm so glad that I came here instead. I really got such a good night's sleep. One of the hotel staff, Ekko, was extra helpful in answering my questions in English, allowing me to stay longer in the lobby while I waited for my friend and even offered me a bottle of water. He was very welcoming! The the bed is so comfortable and soft and the hotel is very clean. And the breakfast is also delicious. You also have a vending machine on the first floor that takes digital payment and a mini refrigerator in your room. There's also a smart TV with HDMI and screen mirroring. It's great value for money and it's also just a really comfortable place to stay. The interior design is really beautiful and eclectic. I think you'll have fun just hanging out in the lobby, good music playing, for a couple hours doing some work at one of the many sitting areas in the lobby, if you're a digital nomad like me. Really nice vibe!From$41
FAQs about How to get around shanghai
Is there a Grab or Uber in Shanghai?
Grab and Uber do not operate in Shanghai. The local alternative is Didi Chuxing, which you can access directly via the Alipay Transport tab or WeChat Didi mini-program—no separate app download is needed. Foreign visitors can also use the official Shanghai QR Code (Suishenma) via the Easy Go mini-program for taxi bookings and all public transport. How to use the Shanghai subway as a foreigner?
Using the Shanghai subway is straightforward for foreigners with 3 easy options:
Use Alipay/WeChat Pay: Open the Transport section, select Shanghai, and activate the Metro QR code to scan at gates.
Official travel tools: The Easy Go mini-program (for international visitors) provides a universal Shanghai QR Code for subway, bus and ferry.
Physical tickets/cards: Buy single tickets from station machines (English interface) or a Public Transport Card (20 CNY refundable deposit) at service counters. The maglev line also supports Visa/Mastercard/AE chip contactless payment for direct gate entry.
All subway signs are bilingual (Chinese/English), and transfers are free within the paid station area. How do you pay for public transport in Shanghai?
Shanghai public transport (metro, bus, ferry) uses unified payment methods for locals and foreigners, no cash is required for most cases:
Alipay/WeChat Pay: The most convenient option—activate the Shanghai Transport QR code in the Transport section for one-scan payment.
Public Transport Card: A reusable card (20 CNY deposit) for seamless use across all public transport, refundable when leaving Shanghai.
Foreigner-exclusive: The Shanghai QR Code (Suishenma) via the Easy Go mini-program (no Chinese phone number needed) with the same benefits as local payment methods.
Physical tickets: Available at metro/bus station machines (English support) for one-time use, paid by QR code or cash.Is a taxi in Shanghai expensive?
Taxis in Shanghai are affordable, especially for group travel (cost-splitting makes it cheaper than individual metro fares). The 2026 base fares are low: traditional taxis start at 14 CNY for 3km, electric taxis at 16 CNY for 3km, with a 2.7 CNY per km charge after the initial distance. A 30% night surcharge (11PM–5AM) applies, but downtown trips rarely cost more than 60 CNY. For long trips (e.g., airport to city), taxis are pricier than the metro, but still cost-effective for 2+ people.
