Where is Nara?

Nara is a small but historic city located approximately 40 kilometers south of Kyoto and 35 kilometers east of Osaka—taking about 50 minutes to reach Nara from either of these starting points. The city is served by two major railway stations: Kintetsu Nara Station and JR Nara Station. For visitors heading to Nara’s primary attractions, including Todai-ji Temple and Nara Park, Kintetsu Nara Station is more convenient.

Best For

Travelers seeking maximum convenience and shorter walking distances.

International tourists using the JR Pass to save on transport costs.

  • Kintetsu Nara Station: This station is located near some of the city's most famous and popular attractions, including Kofuku-ji Temple, Todai-ji Temple, Nara Park, Kasuga Taisha Shrine, and the Nara National Museum. It is the most convenient station for tourists visiting these sites. However, it is important to note that any Japan Rail (JR) Pass does not cover services to or from this station.
  • JR Nara Station: Located approximately 1 kilometer or a 10 to 15-minute walk from Kintetsu Nara Station, JR Nara Station is further away from the city's most famous landmarks. For example, walking from JR Nara Station to Todai-ji Temple takes about 30 minutes, compared to only 15 minutes from Kintetsu Nara Station. Nevertheless, the JR Pass covers services to and from JR Nara Station, making it an attractive option for many international visitors.

Regardless of which station you choose to use, Nara is a small city that can be explored on foot, and both stations provide access to the most popular attractions. Please keep in mind, however, that Kintetsu Nara Station is the more convenient of the two.

How Can I Get to Nara from Kansai Airport | HARUKA Express

How Can I Get to Nara from Kansai Airport | HARUKA Express

Introduction of Kansai-Airport Express “HARUKA” and Kansai-Airport ...

The "HARUKA Kansai Airport Express" (also known as the Haruka or Remote Express; hereinafter referred to as HARUKA) is a high-speed limited express train operated by JR West, connecting Kansai Airport to Osaka and Kyoto. After departing from Kansai Airport, the HARUKA only stops at Tennoji Station (south of downtown Osaka), Osaka Station (Umeda) and Shin-Osaka Station (north of downtown Osaka), and finally Kyoto Station. Travelers heading to Nara can purchase a discounted Kansai Airport-to-Nara package, transfer to the "JR Yamatoji Line" at Tennoji Station, and continue to downtown Nara.

While there are no direct train services from Kansai Airport to Nara, taking the HARUKA to Tennoji Station and transferring to the JR Yamatoji Line for JR Nara Station is the fastest rail option, taking as little as 70 minutes (1 hour and 10 minutes). Additionally, JR West offers the "HARUKA Special One-Way Ticket" exclusively for foreign tourists. This ticket allows you to ride the HARUKA at a discounted price and includes a free transfer to the JR Yamatoji Line, making it an ideal choice for travelers going from Kansai Airport to Nara.

  • Note: JR Nara Station is located on the west side of downtown Nara. However, major attractions such as Nara Park, Todai-ji Temple, Kasuga Taisha Shrine, Kofuku-ji Temple, and the bustling Higashimuki Shopping Street are all located near Kintetsu Nara Station on the east side of town. If you take the JR line to JR Nara Station, you will need to transfer to a bus to reach these attractions, which can be somewhat inconvenient.
  • Budget Option: For those looking to save money, you may consider taking the Nankai Electric Railway "Airport Express". Although it is slower and has fewer amenities than the HARUKA, the fare is cheaper. You would take this to Namba and then transfer to the Kintetsu line for Nara. For details, please refer to the "Airport Express" section on this page.

After booking my Kyoto-Kansai Haruka ticket, I picked it up on-site at Kyoto Station. The attendant helped me out, so there was no problem. I also received help with my Osaka Station transit pass, which I was very grateful for.

Ordering the HARUKA One-way Ticket is super convenient! Buy the Kyoto version through Trip.com for 2,200 yen, saving you nearly 1,000 yen compared to the original price. When you need to exchange it for a physical ticket, the green machine at Kyoto Station scans your QR code and passport super fast, and seat reservations are free. It's comfortable even with lots of luggage, a must-have for visiting Japan, highly recommended!

Much cheaper than buying it at the station. Scanner the QR code at the machine and got kind of a voucher, which you had to exchange into a train ticket at the machine. You can ask the staff of you are unsure what to do :)

A great way to buy a Haruka Express ticket. It's significantly cheaper than buying the same ticket at the airport because VAT is waived for tourists. I received a confirmation with a QR code, then scanned it easily at the green machine at the station and exchanged it for a ticket (you also need to scan your passport at the same machine to prove you're a tourist). Everything is quick and easy. I recommend it! Keep in mind that Haruka has reserved and unsecured carriages; the carriages will be clearly marked as "Reserved" and "Unreserved."

Redemption through QR voucher machine at C tickets counter where our coach just stops in front at No.6. Seamlessly process took less than a minute to print the tickets, drop the luggage and hoop on the bus, while other travellers still queuing up at the tickets kiosk.

Very easy to find the bus and redeem the tickets. I prefer to buy on this platform for certainty and also paying in SGD, avoiding the foreign currency conversion charge.

Worth the price, if you are traveling with 2 big luggage’s (which leaving Japan is almost guaranteed that you will have). if you are close to one ocat stations it is the BEST option to go to KIX airport.

I had originally booked a minibus to Kansai Airport, thinking that having a private car pick me up right downstairs from the hotel would save me the walk to the Limousine Bus Station and save me a lot of time, which seemed convenient. However, the minibus driver informed me via WhatsApp that we needed to allow two hours for the journey to the airport. Wouldn't taking the minibus take longer than taking the bus? The bus journey from Umeda to the airport takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes, and the service is very frequent, with a bus every 10 minutes. Taking the minibus, on the other hand, would take two hours. After this experience, I recommend taking the bus. Of course, there are many other transportation options from Umeda to the airport, but since I was carrying two large suitcases and two small suitcases, taking the bus was more convenient. A friendly reminder: the boarding point in Umeda is at Itakyu Sanbangai, where there are QR code ticket machines.

This is the first time I took the Rikizu Bus from Kansai Airport to Umeda. In addition to the fare cheaper than on-site purchase, it is also 10 points convenient to exchange tickets. The exchange machine is outside the airport terminal T1, near Limousine Bus Station code in the ticket exchange machine scan, there is a physical ticket, the bus station has staff to help place luggage, and the seats are 10 minutes comfortable, reaching Umeda Bus Station (Link Mall ground floor) takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes.
