One of the oldest hotel along Gurney Drive but still among the best and cheapest in that area. Clean and friendly staff. Fair breakfast buffet spread. Free canned drinks and apples daily. Simply amazing hotel. We chose the seaview deluxe room and the view facing the bay was amazing. The new Gurney bay park is just in front of the hotel where you can jog and catch sunrise at the promenade. Evergreen Laurel is surely my favorite hotel in Georgetown and will come back here soon.From$46

My elderly parents stayed at The Gurney during their medical checkup in Penang and accidentally left behind some documents. We emailed the hotel and left a message through booking.com to no avail. Then through a phone call, we got connected to Danesh at the Concierge Department, who then went the extra mile to coordinate among various departments within the hotel, and mailed the document through express courier service. The hotel is good and clean, but the service of parking security is terrible, before we check in, one of the security was playing his phone and videocalling with his friend，so he didnt even notice our car，when he finally noticed us after my husband was leaving to check in first， he knocked our car heavily，and said this is not parking area，i said ok，just a second，he is checking in，the security was rolling his eyes and said it emphasisly again，asked me to move it and i dont even have driving license here. One minutes later ，my husband was back with room card，he checked and let us just parking right there！！ can not believe there are rude staff in this fancy hotel！

We brought our 2 kids along during this trip to penang and arrive earlier than the check in time but the management and staff give a nice hospitality to us and even gave us early check in and upgrade our room plus room near to hotel lift. First time staying at VOUK hotel. It’s definitely not the most luxurious hotel, but for the price point, it’s worth a stay.
Pros:
Location is perfect, with lots of local delights within the vicinity (2-3km away).
Receptionist and all other hotel staffs are mostly friendly, except they are not very fluent in English and communication may be a little difficult.
Cons:
Amenities are not very complete, and cleanliness can be improved. The cups were not washed and carpeted floor was not vacuumed.
P.S. I don’t recommend the oden from the lounge. We waited for 45 minutes even though we were the only customer in the lounge. The noodles were not cooked and the Tom Yum gravy was purely made of oil.From$38

The location is great, walking distance to nearby mall & eateries. Room was spacious & decorated in luxurious style. Toilet was clean & equipped with bath tub which was a plus point for us.
Love the breakfast spread that consisted of various nice food choices & the waitresses was very helpful especially to elderly.
The only drawback was noise made by nearby hotel/ karaoke area at night.

We had a pleasant three-day stay at this hotel. The hotel is in an excellent location, situated between two large malls with plenty of shops and restaurants and within a reasonable cab ride to both George Town and Batu Ferringhi. The room was quite spacious but a little bit dated and worn down. It could use a refresh. The bed was very comfortable, however, and the water pressure in the shower was excellent. We enjoyed using the beautiful infinity pool. Service was friendly and efficient. One area that could use improvement is the breakfast. Although there is a good variety of items offered, many just weren't very tasty. The best thing on the buffet was the homemade ice cream. Overall, this is a good place to stay when exploring the island of Penang.From$174

Stayed here one night in family suites with 2 rooms with my 2 kids, the hotel is not far from Komtar penang. Parking is not an issue even for our MPV, their rotating car park with escalator can move the car into empty slot. Check-in is fast and we stayed at level 19th with nice city and some ocean view. Room is very big with a living room, master room with big washroom and changing cabinet, and another connecting room. Wifi is fast and there are 19 tv channels to choose from. Next morning we went for their gym at level 22, not very big but good enough with 5-6 workout machines. Breakfast is at level 21 buffet styles, choice is just nice, not many but food is ok with reasonable price, only RM21 per pax. From$39

I recently stayed at the Berjaya Hotel in Penang and found the experience to be a mix of comfort and inconvenience. The bed was notably comfortable, providing a good night's rest. However, my stay was marred by significant noise issues. It seemed like there was a lot of disturbance coming from the surrounding rooms, particularly when someone next door used water facilities. I suspect the main water compressor might be located near my room (2209), which contributed to the noise levels.The hotel, in general, shows signs of aging. While it maintains a classic charm, it would benefit greatly from refurbishment to enhance the overall guest experience. First WOW - look at all the cultural heritage, beautiful art, antique items and furniture, the Feng Shui Koi pond, water fountain, greenery! OMG- better than visiting a museum- you get to live and experience it!!! Second WOW- looking for street food? Walk around and you see stalls selling the local delish: SATAY, Lok Lok, Char Hor Fun and other stalls. Also, the handicraft stores with Batik and wooden sculptures! Other amenities : open swimming pool, 3 shower room next to it and hair dryer (tip: the water pressure and shower much more satisfying compared to bathtub or shower inside dorm room, and a game/ relax room filled with couch to wind down after a tiring day. and just Final WOW- the receptionist and staffs are helpful and well-informed! Guests were invited to join in the fun and you can see guests lounging in the open, relaxed and chatting with the staffs!
Room for improvement: mosquitoes... can't seem to get rid of them ( so be prepared) and the places are considered clean... but not spotless. I hope this culturally rich building can be well maintained, and the places be properly upgraded even more as it succeeds as one of the most valuable hotel experience in Georgetown 🥰

When we returned, a misunderstanding ensured. Cos of my earlier encounter, I was just unreasonable. But thank goodness for Suhaila (I think) and her manager - they deescalated the situation with grace and aplomb. That bump aside, I had a lovely time. Was in room 213. Initially I was worried because I have read about noise issues coming from the club next door. But either the club was closed or the soundproofing worked, there were no disturbances. We slept like babies. The room was beautiful, and the location is amazing. This hotel is highly Recommended. Just don’t bother to pay extra for the breakfast. That was just too sad. We tried it on our last day in the hotel as we were leaving early for the airport. It was dismal.

The hotel is small with two levels only. The room is clean and in good shape. It is not sound proof though. You can hear noises from outside and in the evening, the lights from the hallway comes through the lover glass above the door. A bit disturbing especially if you can’t sleep with lights on. If they could turn if off after midnight, would be great. Hot shower is excellent but the positioning of the shower is a bit weird. Right on top of the toilet. They provide towels, shampoo/body wash and lotion and tv but so far only sports channel is English. Hot and cold water for drinking is outside the ally. They also have a coffee shop that is open early in the for breakfast until afternoon. The mosque is right next door and the first prayer of the day starts at 06:00hrs.

We checked in here on 11/05 room No.6 just for a few hours stay to freshen up as we needed to wait until 9pm got our flight back to Sabah. All staff was super friendly and welcoming. Especially that Malay associate who was very polite and professional. He even took the extra step to personally sanitize the room for us to ensure that we were comfortable with our stay. Kudos to him. Room was very simple, nice and clean. I really wished we had more time to enjoy the room and it’s surroundings. Although they not have a TV in the room but they have basic things like safety box and hair dryer which was great. At the back of the hotel they have a common area which is somewhat like a balcony where you can chill and eat or drink your stuff. Unfortunately we were too tired to take photos of the room but overall, we were very pleased with our stay and friendly staff. We will come back. Thank you.

I stayed for 2nights. After checkin, the bedsheet is badly stained. But after feedback to reception, they quickly changed the bedsheet. So its fine. However, 2nd day, I requested for room makeup, they changed to 2 towels. Which is dirtier than the bedsheet ok the first day. My advise is to bring your own towel. The hotel is along the road. I did not experience very noisy commotion outside. But the hotel provides earplug if you are sensitive to noise. The television is not working. Has image but no audio. 4 channel only. Wifi is weak. Regardless, it is still a good hotel with good location. Small and cosy.

Strange layout- I’m guessing it wasn’t built as an hotel. Rooms are small and have frosted windows so you can’t see out. No fridge in room but air con works ok. Hot water in shower which is right above the toilet. Bed was large and very firm mattress. All very clean, room cleaned daily which you don’t always get in budget hotels. Staff were friendly and helpful especially the Indian girl who works reception in the evening who helped us with ferry bookings. In summary I was happy for the price.

Disliked · first of all, i would like to complain about the room itself. the old furniture smeel from the wardrobe stinks the whole room. aircond is not cold. room 904 9th floor. it was literally at 16 degrees but it was not cold. next, the pillow provided is like ”sotong” (squid) where there is no cotton in. so lembik and i felt that the beggers out there has better pillows to sleep with. i mean, how can a 3 star hotel provide pillow that is worst than a 2 star shoplot hotel. very disappointed on this. the comforter was also very thin its like a white cloth only with fully filling. better give a plain white cloth as a blanket. basically, we been put off with the beautiful pictures from the hotel but what was given below expectation especially with the pillow, comforter and the matress. the main reason to have a stay in hotel to enjoy a good night rest and sleep but this is not achiveable in this hotel with the NON SOUND Prof windows and door, you can hear the sounds of vehicles from the road below. very disturbing for a sleep. basically, i would rate this hotel as BAD and making in my WORST hotel that i have stayed. if can please avoid and choose many other hotels nearby.

|0.26km from MalabarStayed 4 nights in MM. chose this hotel due to some sentimental reasons. My aunt used to live in one of the units along Muntri Street. The location of the hotel is good, can easily walk to many eateries and attractions. However there are a few AFI that the hotel can look into. 1. A signage could be put at the door to show the reception area. On the day of check in, the staff was not at her table. I walked into the property with my luggage, passed the cafe and wander all over unsure where the check in reception was. I passed by the waiters in the cafe but none approached us to ask if we were checking in - thought it was obvious with us lugging our luggage all over. I had to ask a waiter who pointed to the room next to the cafe which was the reception, with just a desk and laptop. 2. Upon check in was shown a unit opposite the main building. Our room was on the 2nd floor and we had to climb a steep staircase. I’m ok with the staircase as long as someone could help us with the luggage up the stairs. My mum is 73 and my aunt is 72. All 3 of us are ladies and I would have issue managing 2 huge luggage. Was happy that the hotel assisted to bring the luggage up upon check in. 3. The day before check out, I went to the reception to ask for help with the luggage for the next day. We had to leave for the airport at 7.30am. The lady at the desk told me that their staff only start work at 8am and the person working the night shift is an old uncle so he’ll not be able to help. I told her my mum and aunt are in their 70s. It is difficult for us to carry the luggage down the steep stairs. She offered no solution and looked at me blankly. She also told me she would not be in so early to do the check out. So I asked her how to settle my bill and finally decided to pay up on the spot. Frankly I was really upset with her service. Eventually to solve our problem, we packed all our stuff into recycling bags and laundry (thanks to the hotel for supplying quite a few) bags the night before. In the morning on check out day, we carried the empty luggage to the first floor, it was more manageable. Then we carried all our recycling bags and laundry bags in batches and repacked into our luggage on the first floor. I would think the hotel could be more accommodating by asking a staff to come in half an hour early to assist with the luggage. With the price that I paid, I really hope the service could be better.

Got few spider web on the ceiling and the room is quite small for the price. If you want to have a short stay maybe its okay but if you want to have long stay you might find other place that have private bathroom and spacious room to walk around. Its not 24hours receptionist bcs when got back around 2am there’s no one at the counter. Despite the initial room assignment problem it was resolved to our satisfaction and we are particularly pleased with the insider recommendation of places to eat and visit. Our trip was made so much better just following their recommendations. Areas for improvement is there’s no full length mirror and plug for hair drying in the toilet. Drying at the plug in bedroom is inconvenient as there’s no mirror. Plug placement are not well thought out and finally room soundproofing is bad. Areas that was a hit - 24 hour lounge was great, beautiful design and spacious room.
