This hotel is not quite up to speed yet. This was our second time at the occidental, our last trip was five years ago, and we wanted to see what changes the Barcelo brand had made on the resort. The first thing on our minds was how safe was the hotel in the middle of a pandemic? We had recently traveled to playa del carmen Mexico and were very impressed with all the safety measures in place at our hotel. The occidental did have hand sanitizer stations and distancing signage and all the staff had on masks. It was also mandatory for all guests to have on masks as well unless you were eating or in the pool. Bottom line is we felt safe. My wife and I will give the staff high marks on service, from the bartenders and wait staff we would like to mention a few that made our trip enjoyable, Liliana, Ingrid, David, Antonio, Christian and Carlos. There were more but did not get their names. Thank you to the real heroes the cooks and chefs, your Food was very tasty and well-seasoned; drinks were of good quality. Now because this is a review here are some things that the resort fell short on. They have a nice new pool by the ocean with a swim up bar, but it was only open Friday- Sunday very sad! No evening entertainment during the week also only on the weekend. All the ala carte menus in restaurants were very limited with about four entrée choices to choose from. The grounds were not taken care of, it just looked like they did not have a grounds crew, animal feces and debris on walkways grass and bushes all overgrown, downed branches and leaf’s everywhere, it was much cleaner 5 years ago. we know that the hotel was closed from March until November, but We felt that the hotel was just not up to speed, clarifying that this is a management issue and not the employees’ fault. Management fell short in maintaining Barcelo standards and they need to focus on the details. My wife and I love costa Rica and we will be back, if you go please bring tip money, the employees work very hard and need our support!

We were some of the first Americans to visit the Mangroove after restrictions started lifting on 9/1/20. Admittedly, we were a bit nervous about what we would find upon our arrival, especially since we saw that COVID cases were on the rise when we arrived. Luckily, all of our apprehensions were put to bed very quickly. Upon arrival, our temperatures were taken, and we quickly realized that all staff strictly wore masks at all times - correctly and uniformly - during our entire visit. Furthermore, the staff went above and beyond to use UV lighting and to ensure that all shared surfaces were exceptionally clean. We felt very safe during our entire visit, and the attitude the staff had toward keeping everyone safe was palatable. The property is gorgeous and immaculately maintained. The pool, while small, is beautiful and very clean. I only wish that the hotel did a better job of "reserving" seats - or at least prioritizing them - for guests of the hotel, instead of allowing a "free for all" where hotel guests have to compete with day passers. Additionally, the difference in the crowd from the guests vs day passers was....noticeable. The rooms are modern, but also rustic, and lend themselves to a peaceful feeling. I was impressed by the quality of the furniture and decor, and the general spaciousness. The indoor-outdoor shower is wonderful, and I was impressed with the overall design. Very well done. The food is, in general, quite good. All breakfasts and dinners were delicious and impeccably prepared, if not slightly overpriced. Lunch was a bit of a weak point, with salads and tacos that were rather bland. Additionally, the use of cheese is overwhelming - even for an American palette. One thing to keep in mind is that the resort is located on a bay, so the beach water is rather dark and not translucent as you'll see at other Costa Rica resorts. However, the views from the beach are gorgeous. Additionally, there are plenty of watersport activities which can be arranged through the hotel, and they are very well priced. We were very fortunate to go on a whale watching tour (which was highly successful, with an intimate interaction of a mother humpback whale and her calf), and a visit to Egg Beach just by the Four Seasons, for a very reasonable price. We felt safe the entire time, and have memories that will last a lifetime. Service is overwhelmingly friendly and professional. I could not be more pleased with the interactions I had with all staff. Everyone that I met was genuinely friendly, and always willing to help or engage in conversation. If you're planning on visiting the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica - during or not during COVID times - I would not hesitate to recommend the Mangroove. I, for one, cannot wait to return!

My friend and I stayed here through a travel agent's recommendation. We trusted the agent, so we didn't look at the reviews prior to booking. I'm hoping you're doing this prior to booking to save the trouble we had. Some things to consider as you're determining if this is the right hotel for you: Although the grounds around the 4 main buildings and lobby is beautiful, the overall hotel is very dated and very secluded from restaurants and places of interest. Be prepared to get a rental car, or else it will cost $20 to just get off the property and another $20 to come back - it doesn't matter if it's 1 kilometer away, or 5 kilometers. Although the wait staff is good, the food is expensive ($18 for a basic hamburger, $20-26 for a salad or basic entree dish). It would have been great if they offered guac or salsa and chips. The desserts were of low quality. The bar is not staffed by a bartender. It puzzled me how there would be 1-3 tables with guests and yet it would take a long time to have one of the two servers to help or bring your check especially at night. Their free buffet in the morning was great and offered some good options (eggs, pancakes, meat option, rice/beans, cereal, toast, and an assortment of juices). It far surpassed what they offered on their normal menu. The employees congregate a lot at the front desk. The front desk team is not super helpful and were in the back office a lot, or would need to go there to answer questions/get documents that were needed. We had a front desk employee who ordered us a taxi when we didn't ask for it - calling us 15 minutes after we had just asked how much one would cost. They talked to us about the Diamante Eco Adventure Park excursion they could book for us. When we decided to book it with them, they had a very hard time actually reserving it for us when it came to the details. They told us we had to go to the front gate as the excursion bus could not pick us up at the lobby - which was false per the same company that dropped us off at the lobby later that day. They told us we could go in the morning or in the afternoon - we chose the afternoon so we could sleep in. Our bus came at 1pm, but we got there around 1:40. We went on the excursion, but got there and were told that the park would be closing at 4pm and our bus back was scheduled to leave at 3:30pm, which was very frustrating. We had limited time to actually enjoy ourselves. The room itself was incredibly dated. The beds were very basic and one of ours actually broke when one of us sat on it. When we pulled up the bedskirt, the beds had MANY stains on them. My friend had to sleep on a pull-out that night as the maintenance team had left for the day. I wanted to note here that the maintenance team is VERY hardworking at this hotel - they just left at 10pm. While we were waiting the next morning for the bed to be replaced, we took a walk through the property. It feels VERY deserted. The villas seem to be deserted and in various
