Stayed here one night as part of a group tour. It is a 3 hr drive from Douz in cramped 4 x 4 ,the second half alongside the fence of national park ,very flat .The camp is in amongst dunes. Tents fine, beds OK ,sheets rather worn. Bathroom ,the least desirable of all the desert camps I have visited, in any country. Plastic lining to the toilet and then spoon wood shavings on top .. Water contained in bucket with a dipper that was too big to fit in the bucket and the bucket too heavy to lift. Kettle on a hinge held some small amount of water. Would have preferred a nice toilet block rather than a parody on an en- suite. Other guests were a raucous group of French schoolchildren/students who screamed at the wind during the night, yelled and mayhem ensued. No relaxing stargazing possible. The meal . Was told it would be goat. Yum . No not yum. I expected a stew type big goat cook up ,with onions, tomatoes, redolent of garlic ,cumin ,spice .Maybe with cous cous or rice and big hunks of local bread . It was a very French meal and very bland. Watery soup first ,then something else bland and forgettable ,the goat was just a small lump of meat with cous cous and carrots on the side. No sauce. No flavour . Some forgettable dessert. They did at least have home made lemonade . The chaps in the kitchen/bar kindly made me a very good real hot chocolate at bedtime. They did not choose the menu!!! The least enjoyable meal I have ever had in a desert camp ,anywhere .

The desert is stunning. The location of Camp Mars is unique. But something is wrong... More thought has been given to economic results than to the traveler's experience. Too many haimas, too much building for bar and restaurant, too much business vision. Honestly, I would have preferred a smaller camp, more humble, more in harmony with the environment. If you expect to spend a night or two in a quiet place, look for another camp. Camp Mars is a kind of tourist resort for at least 30 or 40 peple. Another thing we didn't like is that they have 3 dromedaries tied by the legs in case the guests want to go for a tour. Very little sensitivity! I appreciated much more the herds of dromedaries with their shepherds camping freely between Douz and Matmata. A big pity! Please, dear traveler, if you are considering a short desert dip, try other options!
