We stayed in Avaana with my wife in February 2019. Hotel’s owner met us at the station himself at the car with conditioner. This was very comfortable. This is a great place. Large, not warm house, where a guest can have all the things he need. Soft beds, wonderful furniture, exquisite interior, hot water and tasty food. There is a beautiful tropical garden near the house: banana and nut trees, cocoa palms, coffee trees and flowers. From the wide terrace you can breathe fresh air and listen to the birds songs. The garden goes down to the valley, where a clean stream runs and rice grows. Here, sitting on a big stone, I met the dawn with great pleasure, looking at the monkeys playing in the crowns of trees and at the rare birds of Sri-Lanka. House owners Raja and Lakshmi are great and friendly people. They are very responsive and positive. With them we felt happy and home. Raja toured us around the area with a very interesting story. Laksmi cooks very tasty national dishes. We took her roti cakes with us and remembered her for a long time with the kindest words. Raja and Lakshmi became our best friends. We are eager to return to this beautiful friendly house again. Thank you, Raja and Lakshmi! Thank you, Sri-Lanka!

We stayed here for a week having been recommended by friends who had previously visited and we were SO happy that we did! Throughout our stay the whole family made us incredibly welcome and we couldn't of asked for anything more! We attended a Traditional Sri Lankan cooking lesson onsite with Sulochana where we learnt how to make the most amazing curry and side dishes. Sulochana was very friendly and informative and we really felt we learnt alot. This lady is very talented and speaks several languages which meant everyone could really learn and understand everything. Our room was set right on the riverbank, offering beautiful and peaceful views to enjoy, with a balcony to sit out on and relax in the sunshine. The room was very modern and clean with comfy beds. The family were so helpful and helped us find a wonderful tour guide for our visit to Sri Lanka. We would highly recommend a stay at Thotopula Residence and will be back again next time. Thank you for all you did and what a wonderful place you have.

A great place for a relaxing stay. Lovely surroundings and unique hill top chalets. Rooms are very good and comfortable enough to stay calm and quite. When the entire hill area is illuminated with feeble light in the night, no words to express our perception. Meals are included with breakfast (cooked to order) and an elegant dinner with table-side service given us a warm heartfelt hospitality. Swimming pool is clean and well maintained with careful attention. Nice place, excellent staff and unforgettable delicacy & distinctive foods. Scenic view and fascinating surrounding boosts to visit again. Better if we could spent two days to enjoy our tour!! It’s an eco-friendly incomparable unique creation indeed! Hill top chalets are recommended for newly wedded couples seclusion

We spent nearly a month on two occasions at Rock Edge Residence during July and August. We wanted to spend some time in Sri Lanka during NZ winter and came across this place by accident. We spent two days initially and liked the place so much came back for two more weeks. Travelled around for few days and came for the rest of our stay in Sri Lanka. Rock Edge is located on the side of a hill overlooking Mahaweli River. It has a splendid view of the river below and mountains around. There is an open balcony to sit and enjoy the view. It has four large rooms with ensuite, AC/ and own balcony except one room. It is very clean and totally private and if there are no other guests you will have the full use of the common areas, which are spacious. Even with guests present, you will have your privacy. It is in close proximity to public transport and a “tuk tuk” is only a phone call away. There are tea/coffee making facilities and hosts will provide you with any meals if you require. However, I suggest that you go with some basic food items so that you are prepared.

Lovely room in a small hotel/guesthouse in a quiet part of town, about a 25min walk around the lake and you are in the heart of the city. Breakfast that's provided was generous and very nice. Room was clean and spacious. A big plus, is the staff, Kaloom, the manager was so helpful throughout our stay, and and a big thank you to Kapila, the resident tuk tuk driver, for helping us out in so many ways. So often it's the personal interaction that makes a holiday, and it was certainly the case for us in Kandy.

We have very much enjoyed our stay in this lovely hotel with amazing views! The room was clean and provided everything we needed. There was a little problem with the hot water for half a day but it was soon resolved and the stuff was really sorry about the inconvenience. The breakfast was served in a nice terrace overlooking the mountains and the food was good. Not sure about the possibility to have lunch or dinner there. The location seemed good and calm, however, you will probably want to take the tuk tuk to ride to the town centre as the hotel is quite high in the mountain.

My wife and I stayed here for a couple of nights on our honeymoon and thoroughly enjoyed it. It's quite high on the mountain making it a challenge for tuk tuk drivers, it's about 500 Rupees and a 20 to 25 minute drive from the train station, but there are many signs for it along the way. Make sure you take time for the swimming pool and enjoy the view, crisp air and birds. The staff here were very helpful with advice, they found us a driver with car for a good price but most importantly they produced us amazing food catering to our vegan and vegetarian diets and went far beyond what was necessary. We definitely recommend this little piece of paradise and am sure you will too

Really sorry but need to say this, this is not a good hotel to choose. It was perhaps more of a homestay than a hotel and not expensive but even so you should be able to expect cleanliness. Booked for 2 nights to catch the last 2 days of cricket as our hotel had no more availability. We had no choice but to stay the first night as it was late and we were having a monsoon downpour. We checked out first thing after an appalling night. I'll pick out some of the bad points as there were no good points to review. There were heavily scented air freshers everywhere which effected your breathing, we presume these were to cover the smell of damp, cigarette smoke and drains. It is a very run down place in need of a refurb or rebuild. The bed linen and towels desperately needed replacing. When you travel round this part of the world you should expect to see some insects in your room however NOT huge ants nests with lines of ants carrying their findings which were coming from the dead fly type thing under my pillow on the bed. One nest was in the shower base so unfortunately they all died. Dead ants and their prey all around our feet. There's definitely termites in the woodwork around the rickety door and window frame as you will see on the photos. I won't tell you about the toilet as this wouldn't be fair to my fellow reviewer's and readers. We had difficulty understanding who were staff and who were guests as everyone seemed to be related in one way or another, brother, wife, mother, daughter, husband etc don't get me wrong these people were friendly enough but it was very strange. When we were trying to check out in the morning we found men sleeping on the floor and couches in the common/not working TV room (Were they staff or guest?!?!). We were out of there like a shot, headed straight to the cricket ground and had breakfast at a lovely little bakery served by a group of really sweet ladies who I think fell in love with my husband lol. We had to have a good ending which we did when England won.

We went here to stay two nights of our honeymoon trip and we were truly grateful visiting there, even though it is located somewhat far from Kandy. The place was soo relaxing, and the hotel staff was very attentive for each and every need of ours. There were several options for us to select for our meals and the options were changed on daily basis. The food was delicious and table presenting was also very good. There are five cottages and they are unarguably cozy, relaxing ones with all the amenities we expected to have. The bed was very comfortable and there was a jacuzzi as well. Really enjoyed the two days here. Thank you Thilan; the hotel manager and the hotel staff for making our stay a memorable one.

The environment is much better than in Kandy. Going through a bumpy road. It's very gray. Sometimes it's blocked. The hotel was nice to check in early when we checked in that day. As the brother of the Tutu bus in Colombo was too enthusiastic to help us buy a seven-point train ticket, the next morning at breakfast, Ms. Checkin came over to say one of the reservations. To make up the difference. I think the hotel in Sri Lanka is curious that the price for one and two people is different. Later, the difference was more expensive than Ctrip. I still feel uncomfortable. She did n’t say when she checked in. Breakfast was okay. I ’m not quite used to the buffet here. The fried egg brother opened my stack of fried eggs by hand. The fruits are all papaya and watermelon. They are not very rich. The floor-to-ceiling window of the restaurant was not like that when I booked. There are three glass pieces in the middle. Bedding was more comfortable. Kandy was dirty and messy overall. I did n’t think I would come back, and the room had a balcony.

We had two double rooms for our family trip overnighting at The Change Hotel (me, my wife and our kids 8 and 15). This place is really cool. The layout and decor makes it feel "homey" but also a bit trendy. The staff were really friendly and helpful and went out of their way to make us feel welcome. The rooms were clean, the hot water fine but best of all was the balcony and the fantastic views over the countryside. We didn't use the pool as it was raining but it looked fantastic. Wifi worked well. Breakfast as the usual eggs, fruit, juice toast and coffee which we have seen in most of the hotels in Sri Lanka but it was really good and there was plenty of it. Fresh and tasty!! A little out of the way but this adds to the charm, it was still easy to get to and we enjoyed the peace and quiet. Would highly recommend - great value, quality hotel and staff.....

We had a wonderful stay at Samadhi center. The staff was super nice and the food soooooo good ! The setting totally fits into nature, every object has its own place and they feel alive. We treated ourselves with the full Ayurvedic massage treatments for 4 full days and totally felt the difference afterwards. The doctor and his team are very competent and nice. The massage areas were very clean and you melted into nature during the massage. We already miss the cats and dogs, the fireflies at night, the sound of the wind on the trees and nature’s heartbeat. Thank you all for the great experience and we hope to come back again ! ❤️🙏🌸

A gorgeous location, with breathtaking views of the Victoria Resevoir; there is a beautiful infinity pool and a good grass tennis court as well as the Golf Course. Staff are friendly and the food was good. The newly renovated Chalet rooms are excellently designed and equipped and felt luxurious. As the resort is quite a way from the nearest town so you need to consider that all meals are likely to be taken in house. The food is well priced. Where this resort falls down is in it's attention to detail. It feels like there is little managment oversight. For example; there is a great tennis court but the hotel only had two (flat) tennis balls and five racquets (two without grips). The table tennis table near the pool was a good facility but the bats all were worn and needed replacement. The pool is beautiful and has a full time attendant, however there are only 7 sun loungers and you need to go and ask for towels. There is an advertised 'cycle route and map' but when we asked no map was available. Just a little outlay and some attention would sort this. They are trying to improve and renovate the golf course, however the nine-holes which are currently open still require work to them; although the course is undeniably beautiful. Bearing in mind there is a 'captive audience' and no where else to buy golf equipment, the Pro Shop should be well stocked however it was very poor with very few items and looked a mess. Caddie staff were very good and we appreciated the care and attention they gave to our son. This resort has so much potential, and could be one of the most beautiful golf courses in Asia; but it needs a review of how it is run and attention to detail.

We stayed at this property for 2 nights in first week of Jan. we were traveling in a big group and have booked 5 rooms. We arrived early on the day of check in. The guy at the reception greeted us nicely, helped us in early check in and arranged breakfast. We had kids with us which meant demand for hot water, mill etc. Few times in a day. Their staff is very nice in accommodating all our needs. We felt like we are staying at a homestay. The only issue I found was that their Beds are not that comfortable and WC in room no 101 requires repair as there was a foul smell coming from it. Full marks to hotel staff for their courtesy!!

I had the good fortune to stay at the Mount Havana Villa and it was honestly the best lodging experience in my 12 day journey around Sri Lanka! Beginning with the warm welcome from Chanaka upon arrival, every minute of my time on the property was curated to my specific desires. From the sunset hike around the organic farm to a delicious dinner served outside, I was instantly comfortable and relaxed. A beautifully serene night's sleep was followed by a sunrise swim overlooking the mountains, delicious fresh fruit and juice from the property, and a memorable Sri Lankan breakfast of dal and eggplant curry along with homemade roti. I only wish I had more time to spend. Highly recommended!

The location for the guest house was great for us being a 10 minute walk from town, which meant it was very peaceful. Please note though this is up quite a dark lane so may not be suitable to walk back too late. The property is also quite hard to find, there is a sign at the end of the drive for the adjoining kindergarten. Our room however was in need of some repairs such as some of the taps were broken in the bathroom and the mosquito net really needed replacing. We did feel slightly forgotten by the guesthouse whereas other guests were offered dinner and rooms being cleaned we were not offered this. When we also looked for the host we sometimes struggled to find her. She was however able to arrange a taxi for us up to Sigiriya and Dambulla and onwards travel for us which was much appreciated.

I booked this hostel via booking.com. Based on the address, I had problem locating it as the odd numbers of the road run towards the Kandy Lake area. A tuk tuk driver was kind enough to tell me that it was located in the opposite direction about 5 min walk from the Kandy train and bus station further down from the Kandy Post Office. I stayed at this hostel for 2 nights and came here to stay for another night when I returned from Ella and Nuwara Eliya. At about 800 plus rupees a night and with air conditioner, I found it reasonably cheap and comfortable to stay in this hostel. The `capsule' dormitory reminded me of a similar concept hostel I stayed while in Osaka. With a curtain, there is much privacy in the cubicle and sockets for you to charge your camera or hand phones. I preferred the bed beside the air conditioner as the heat in Kandy in Mar was unbearable and terribly hot. The cozy air slipped through my bunk curtain instantly cooled down my body temperature. I slept with my head near the curtain and found it cozy and relaxed. The cool environment induced sleep easily and despite the movement of other guests I did not feel disturbed and was fast asleep after a cold bath. The bed lights are bright enough to read your articles and make your research before you set out for your exploration of Kandy. Bathroom is clean and the staff constantly came in to clean up the area. There is both hot and cold bath. Guests are not allowed to wear their footwear inside the room and are to put them in a cabinet outside the dormitory area. The guesthouse is conveniently located within 5 min walking distance from the train and bus station. I was the first at the queue at the train station to buy the train ticket to Ella. From the bus station, it was so convenient for me to board a bus to Dambulla and returned. The attractions in Kandy are also within walking reach from the hostel. There are also big supermarkets like Food City, Aprico and Keels and many eateries nearby. I particularly like a traditional food center near Aprico Supermarket where I can indulge in the local delicacies (dosai, vada, string hoppers, etc) at the local prices. Breakfast is not inclusive and the premises is monitored and guarded by CCTV. At times, the guesthouse is fully booked and it is prudent to book in advance via booking.com. When I returned from Ella, I was told there was no bed and I had to search for another hostel. Generally, the hostel is quite new and modern and most important it is air-conditioned.

The bathroom is big and there's hot water. The owners are super sweet and very helpful. It's on a hill but you do reach the lake easily in 10 min by foot and in my opinion walking back up isn't so much of a problem if you're fit. If not you can take a tuk tuk and you're there in like 5 min.

We had booked the biggest cottage cabana via booking.com. There are 4 raised cabanas, of 2 sizes each. Spacious and well maintained. The garden area is good and fresh. The pebbled pathways crunch under your shoes. The reception and restaurant area is open to the garden. Gives a homely feeling. The place is accessible via google maps, after negotiating a few meandering curves. The place is at a dead end in a narrow lane, so if you see a road ahead - keep going... one side of the property is bound by a flowing stream. Dunno if any fishes can be caught, as we didnt try. They have parking space if you are driving down. The cabanas themselves are 2 levelled with a double bed below and 2 seoarate beds above overlooking the room below. Only 1 bathroom, with a bathtub though. The place is run by Nishantha, a cordial and helpful man, along with his team, who are helpful and cheery too. English is no problem and information is accurate and precise. The local food is homely heavenly, and a must try. Indy, keep it up man! 📍Location : This place is located in just 20mins away from the Kandy City Center. There are two paths available to reach this place. One is a good road, the other one is a bit rough road. For us the google map showed the rough road. 🏢 Hotel : It is a boutique hotel, situated in quiet decent place. You can have a nice look of the Mahavali river from a very top. Parking is limited. All their rooms are faced to the mountain view. Really stunning. They do have an infinity pool and they allowed us to use liquor near the pool side. All the rooms contains satellite TV, toiletries, towels, a safe, in room tea or coffee making facilities and water bottles. The staff is very flexible and very friendly, specially I would like to mention Mr. Romesh here for his dedicated service at the restaurant. ☕️🍜 Food : Their food is mouth watering. We got to select the food from their menu due to less crowd they couldn’t arrange buffet for us. (CoVID 19 affect tourism) The staff is flexible to arrange the dining table where ever the place within the premises with the best view. Though they don’t have a bar facility, they are helpful to find out the liquor you want. We didn’t receive any welcome drink, may be we were late to check-in. 😉 ❗️Tips : All their rooms are having a good view. If your are with friends, always get a corner rooms because you can have some nice music without disturbing others. This place is very famous among honeymoon couples.

In saying this, it is only a short tuk-tuk ride into the town. The arts center (where you can observe a wonderful cultural dance performance) is only a short distance away, as is the Kandy city/lake lookout point.
