The wife wanted to see the May 9th parade, so we picked this quiet hotel by the river on the “fishing village” street. Most staff could speak English. Our room was on the 4th floor, quite a hike from the reception, and next to a room entitled “Technical Premise” (sic). This emitted a periodic low-register throbbing sound, which we could hear in our room. This was faintly irritating. The room itself was decent, if utilitarian in style, but it had everything that you would need: bath, shower, safe, fridge, wi-fi and had a nice view of the river and the House of the Soviets- this is something of a landmark in the city. Restaurant is good, service was slow on the night we dined there, but there was an excellent duo providing entertainment, a female singer and a jazz guitarist. You can have food in the lobby bar, which has dining tables, the menu is the same as the restaurant and we found the service to be quicker. Not very well advertised, but there is a cocktail bar in the ‘tower’ on the 6th floor which has lovely views of the river at night. It’s a five minute walk to the “Honeymoon Bridge” and the Kant museum. It takes about 30 minutes to walk to the main square in Kaliningrad and the route is very straight forward. It doesn’t take long to orientate yourself. There is a pool and a spa on site, the cost if which was included in our room rate however we didn’t use either. I don’t know what I was expecting from a hotel in Russia, but I was pleasantly surprised by this one.
