0.38km from Antonio's BasmatiWe had a wonderful week at Hotel Berner for half term in February. The slopes were of course busy and snow conditions were average - the hotel was full. As a family of four with two daughters this hotel was perfect for us at is is quiet and away from the lively centre of Zell. Yes it is possible to ski in and almost ski out but there has to be enough snow. The walk to get on Chair 2 is only a few metres but the piste alongside is not suitable for beginners. We were very happy with our room 207 (I think about 35 rooms) which had a small balcony and a view over the back where we could see Chair 2 running. The highlight of the week was the hotel and its staff. Despite them having thousands of guestsevery year, from the moment you arrive (complimenary drinks on arrival) you are made to feel very special - almost a member of the family. We came in on a late flight so missed supper but arrangements had been made in our room. Christoph and Gottfried are wonderful hosts and take the running of the hotel very seriously - no small detail is missed. I am not going to name individual staff members because they are all wonderful and have clearly been trained to the highest standards. The food is exceptional, huge selection at breakfast, cakes and biscuits at teatime and many many courses of 5 star food in the evening. Yes we tried the vanilla ice cream with rocket and balsamic too. My one complaint is I put on a lot of weight. The ski rental company recommended was good and as the resort was so busy that week it was a bit of a pain getting the kids to ski school in the morning as it involves a 7 minute walk to the bus which takes you to the bottom of the Schmitten lift. Another alternative is to walk about 10 minutes to City Express. So in summary this is a wonderful hotel for couples and families who want quiet accommodation, great food, good spa facilities and pool and exceptional hospitality. There is also some good discipline from staff who are not afraid to ask children not to run around the hotel or jump in the pool. So I say thank you once again to Christoph and Gottfried and the whole Berner team for outstanding Austrian hospitality.
