0.13km from Hotel HelvetiaAVOID SAN POLO STAR AT ALL COSTS!!! I was supposed to go to Venice for a conference and unfortunately made a booking with San Polo Star. I called them up in Italy and explained that I needed an invoice quite quickly in order to be able to meet a last minute funding deadline as I am a PhD student. The lady I spoke to told me to email their office team and they would get it sorted for me. Sure enough, I did, but the invoice was not produced in time and as a result, I missed the deadline and had to pay for the accommodation myself. I was quite annoyed given that I had explained the situation to the hotel and asked if I could cancel the booking. In response, I was met with utter contempt and sarcasm and the property sent me a patronizing and rude email to tell me that they would not allow me to cancel. Disgruntled as I was, I had no other option. As a student, funds were tight, I had now missed the deadline to funding for the trip and I could not afford to stay somewhere else and forfeit the £200 already paid. Unfortunately, this was not the end of it though. I was due to go to Venice during the recent extreme floods and when I contacted the property to cancel the trip on these grounds, they still would not concede any ground. Given my previous experience, and knowing it was a long shot, I asked if I could modify the dates at least. I did not ask for a refund. I just wanted to change my dates, even if this involved a cancellation fee or forfeiting the first night. Once again, I was met with resistance. When I contacted Booking.com, the service I had placed the booking through, they confirmed that my request was reasonable and that most properties in Venice had offered their clients full refunds but San Polo Star were not budging! What's more, albeit late, the property did provide an invoice. Hurrah, I thought, I will submit this to the insurance company. That would be something (minus the excess)! Except San Polo Star had somehow, and I don't know how, given that Booking.com claim not to have passed the information on, provided an invoice with an out of date address. I had moved out of that property 8 months prior to placing the booking so I don't know how they got it. Nevertheless, repeated attempts to contact the property directly and through Booking.com have gone down a black hole. I would have liked them to provide a correct invoice but instead, they prefer to ignore all contact. So in summary, not only have I been screwed over by the property but their indifference and appalling customer service means that I can't even make an insurance claim. If you value your sanity, I beg you not to place a booking with them. It will be the worst mistake you could possibly make.
