We had read good reviews and the photos looked nice - the reviews were obviously a long time ago and the photos even older. The rooms were very basic, the slats on the children's bed all broken, towels were small and hard, cold water only, bathroom was grubby, not enough bed linen. I lay on my own beach towel as I did not like the look of the bedding. The temple at the top of the road blasted chanting through a megaphone all night long so sleep was impossible.

Firstly i want to tell to readers, I was looking for a guest house to stay in Anuradhapura. So I didn't call 5star or 4star hotels. I wanted to have a guest house which is close to Jayasrimaha Bodhiya. Even I called several guest houses, but they didn't respond the calls even. But here City Resort Chamika who gave first impression was really good. He didn't miss the business call. So my booking was confirmed over the phone and few minutes later I got the confirmation via sms. I started my journey by train from Colombo with my wife. We left Colombo at 9.15am, we reached there around 4.30pm.We were warmly welcomed by Chamika. He explained about the places where we can visit in Anuradhapura & arranged a tuktuk as well. And I should remind the waiter & waitress service was good. They always smile and served us well. I recommend this hotel. Hope to be back again.

'City Resort' on google maps NOT city capital hostel (this will take you to the back entrance). We took 2 beds in the female dorm and were very happy with it, there are six beds in total (not bunkbeds but real, comfy beds) with a strong ceiling fan and a standalone fan as well. The room was clean as was the bathroom (although our european roommate left her hair all over the floor). We didnt book through any portal online so got a cheaper rate- would recommend calling the owner beforehand. We had rented a scooter the day before and the owner offered us another scooter for cheaper (that we didnt take cuz we were leaving). Staff were really friendly, owner too was friendly but got a bit annoying for us as he kept suggesting what to do and how to do it (which i know is a good thing for a lot of travellers). Id recommend it and stay there again!

Family stayed for two nights visiting the sacred city. Hadn't been to SL with family for a while. Fabulous food - very Sri Lankan with rotti and stringhoppers etc. The rooms were clean and spacious. Friendly staff. Owner took a personal interest with useful advice. We felt very safe. So close to town - we rented some bikes and went for an evening tour. Highly recommended. Great value for money

One of the worst experience I have ever had. The state of the room is ok for the price range. However water spills into the room. Probably from overhead tank. Instead of getting it fixed they cut of the water when it is off peak. Since they close the valve, a person like me who usually wake up early in the morning there is no water in the washroom, so have to wait till the staff wakes up and open the valve. Same goes for the evening, had to give the owner a call to get it opened. After a hectic day I just wanted to watch something on the tv and they haven't paid the subscription fee. Asked them to rectify it but never got it rectified until the 3rd night of the 4 night stay. One of the employees gave me 100 rupees reload card and get the subscription. That also just that night following day again the display says to recharge the account. I asked to clean the room and all what they have done is taken out the trash from the bin. So don't bother to ask for a clean the room, I expected they will clean washroom but never happened. Kudos for the staff for the punctuality when I asked my bed tea at 6.45am it will given around that time. And the food tasted exceptionally good.

We hired, Dushyantha Fernando, number plate CAI-3856. It is a red Toyota, hybrid, 4 door. We hired him for 9 days and he made us feel very comfortable. He drives very safely and he is very familiar with all the touristic, and non touristic spots. He is a very safe driver. He was always very punctual and very friendly. If you want to hire a car and see all of Sri Lanka at your convenience, definitely call him at +94 (76) 695-1955 to book your car. The rates are also very reasonable and affordable. Thank you Dushyantha for a great trip.

We stayed here for one night in Anuradaphura and really enjoyed our time here. The family running the homestay are so friendly and helpful, preparing an impromptu lunch for us on arrival and making a delicious dinner for us in the evening. They also organised a brilliant tuk-tuk driver for us to see the sights of Anuradhaphura and Mihintale, making sure that we could make the most of the very short amount of time we had there. The room was very clean and comfortable, and we had a great night's sleep there. Highly recommend this spot!

One of the best homestays during our 2.5 weeks trip throughout Sri Lanka. Amazing hospitality from the owner and his sweet family. No words would be enough to express how great our stay was. Everything was top notch. Comfortable and clean room, awesome garden, DELICIOUS home cooked Sri Lankan food (really, both breakfasts and dinner were to die for, make sure you order dinner and eat here, very tasty). Great flexibility for check-in, check-out, breakfast and dinner time. We were on a tight schedule and this was just super convenient. If I ever return to Anuradhapura, this is the only place to stay. The only thing I did not like is that our stay at this wonderful place was too short... Thank you very, very much for everything!

Staying at the Lake View Hotel felt like pure luxury. Everything is shiny and new. The room was spacious, clean and high-end. We particularly enjoyed the balcony, which had sun loungers, decking and stunning views across the lake and the stupas of Anuradhapura. We also loved the pool and breakfast was amazing, we could have whatever we wanted and as much of it as we liked. The food was delicious, especially the roti! The service was outstanding throughout and the staff were really attentive, friendly and always went the extra mile. They couldn’t have done more for us in fact. Thank you Lake Forest Hotel for a wonderful end to our 3 weeks in Sri Lanka. Beautiful memories of a beautiful place.

I and my family stayed in Hotel Moonstone again (3D2N). We were treated as family. Rooms were given to us according to our crowd (i.e. kids below 10 and teens) which everyone had their comfort and privacy. Cleanliness was exceptional (rooms, bathrooms, food etc.). Food choices were nice and flexible. Due to the need of our kids, we had to alter the menu few times which were taken without any hesitation. As we had planned to do "Kiri Pindu" pooja to Sri Maha Bodhi and Ruwanweli Maha Saya, Mr. Aravinda's Father (this time we use to call him as uncle) attended himself to cook the "Kiri Bath" and prepare the pooja for us. I must specially thank him for his support on this. Overall, our family enjoyed the stay and really worth for which I spent.Thank you Mr. Aravinda, Uncle and all the staff who served us. Highly recommended nice little hotel for anyone who visiting Anuradhapura.

Check-in wasba breeze and excellent.having built several hotels in my 27year constrution experience,im a little OCD when it comes to the build quality of hotel rooms.i can honestly say that the room i hed was very well maintained and very clean(i check tops of mirors/artwork ,backs of TVs et for very clean).bed was very comfortable and linen of a good quality. Room service was excellent and the menu for -in room dining covered a number of international and local dishes. Rooms have smart TVs ironing board, iron ,tea and coffee macking failities etc.

I was treated to a surprise birthday meal here. We had the restaurant to ourselves. Our table was decorated with flowers and Buddhika had also gone that extra mile by getting me a birthday cake with ‘50’ candles on. He took trouble to make sure we were comfortable and bought the delicious food to our table. Freshly prepared, traditionally cooked, home made Sri Lankan curry (see my piccie). I can honestly say it was the best Sri Lankan curry that we had in our two week holiday (we had curry everyday). I would most definitely recommend coming here to stay, to eat or just to have a Lion Lager and poppadoms on the terrace (which we also did earlier in the day). You can’t go wrong. Thank you Buddhika and team :0)

Let me paint a picture. Imagine a fairly traditional Sri Lankan property on the outskirts of town. The property is possibly an acre and basically backs onto the jungle. Enough room to build a small bungalow at the rear of the property with two rooms. An open-air style eatery sits between the family home at the front of the property and the bungalow at the back. The bungalow bedroom is a reasonable size, but lacks luggage space and the blind on the window is broken. Thankfully, the bed is comfortable. You remember reading that the place is run by a chef, so you decide to eat in for dinner. Wow! What a delightful dinner, in spite of the smell of the kerosene lamps keeping the mosquitos away. And easy on the pocket too. Our biggest mistake in our stay was to NOT eat here on our second night. And breakfast was just as tasty and abundant. And free. So many thanks to Khaya Villa for a very pleasant stay, but I do need to finish with a couple of tips. Firstly, you need to be able to reach to a height of 2.1m if you want hot water, because the hot water tap is at that height, and you will need a lesson on how to make the HW work. In spite of the fact we could both reach the HW tap and switches, we failed to make any HW appear on our first night, so I suggest you ask for a lesson on the HW when you check in. This is a great 2 star hotel. However, hotels.com (which we used) and tripadvisor (both belong to Expedia) rate this as a 3 star hotel, so for that reason and because of the hot water problem (we should have been told how to use the HW when we checked in) I’m only giving 4/5.

Near Angu, the most worrying thing about the whole trip was the cleanliness and comfort that I didn't expect unexpectedly. There was a small garden, except for a few mosquitoes. We asked for 2 standard rooms for 4 people and a big bed when we arrived, so the owner of the hotel gave me a family room. The breakfast is quite rich, and the price is really very good.

The hotel is located in a very good place, very strategic to visit archeological sites and do safaris. We were there with our 8 months daughter. People were extremely nice to us, always helpful and positive. The rooms are huge and very clean. Everything is very modern and all day and night you can hear birds and animals. My family of 4 stayed overnight last week on our way to sacred Buddhist sites. The boutique style hotel is very close to those areas. The room and the bathroom were very clean, neat, calm & beautiful view of rice fields, saw several local birds feeding on berries from nearby tree. The staff was friendly and very nice. The only issue we had was tv didn’t work. The manager said it needed to be updated. Hope it gets done soon. The hotel website photos show correct views. We chose not to get breakfast there since we had to leave early but saw a very delicious table set up near another room. The price was very good compared to a major hotel near by the lake. We looked into Heritage hotel which did not even have WiFi on that day. We will definitely stay again at the Green View Resort next time.

This small and peaceful hotel exceed my expectations by far. The tranquility of the jungle surroundings and distance between the villas (only 7 in total) makes it an ideal place to rest after visiting the nearby temples or going on a safari at the nearby national park. The rooms were clean, spacious and air conditioned, and the bathrooms and shower were outside, making an unique experience, especially when it was raining. The views from both the bedroom and the outdoor patio were breaktaking and we were told elephants can often be seen walking by, although their usual pattern was disturbed due to the heavy rains when I was there, so we didn't see any. Please be advised that this hotel really is in the jungle, so the usual animals can be seen around the grounds, as well as in the open-are spaces of the rooms, such as squirrels, frogs, mice, birds and elephants. It really is a very unique experience. The dining room is very large and open-air, and the food was carefully prepared and very tasty. The staff was very attentive and especially the manager catered to all the needs. If you are looking for a quiet, remote place to stay - this is your place!

Luckies down the road is a great place for an evening meal with beer (£2), Wine (£10 a bottle South American ). They also organised a safari, a tour of the ancient city and transport to our next Hotel. All were very reasonably priced and worked out well. We really enjoyed this family run guesthouse as a family of four. ROOM: Basic. Nothing fancy, however, you could eat your dinner off the floor, the place is that clean. Given we just needed somewhere to sleep, we were fine. Aircon and a fan are in the room, the bathroom/toilet was fine, although open to the outside. You'll need to shut the bathroom door if you don't want the mozzies. The room itself size wise was fine. We were able to stash luggage etc with no issues. DINING: we ate there one night. Although not as cheap as street food (we fed our family of four for around AUD$5 one night!) it is still delightful. The servings are large though, so well worth the money. We had dinner there twice. POOL: Cleaner than what we had experienced in Sri Lanka to that point. It's up above the street level and there is some shade. It's a good size and there is a little "kiddy" pool that is attached: it has some depth to it, but our little one loved that she could practice her "swimming" by herself. There was seating around the pool as well and a shower also. DAYTRIPS: We booked a safari through the hotel to Willpattu National Park as we didn't want to go to Yala. With two kids, visiting ruins in the heat wasn't going to work either. Best decision ever. While we had to get up early (about 0430-0500 for a 0530 departure), it wasn't an issue. Breakfast was provided and the owner himself drove us out to meet the safari jeep. We hopped in and away we went. The driver we had was amazing and was able to spot much more than what we thought we ever would! While we didn't see a lepoard, we came close to seeing a sloth bear and saw so much other wildlife in the park. Our eagle eyed driver saw things that others had missed (eg a jeep roared on past tree where our driver stopped and pointed out a snake that was making a snack out of a birds eggs in a tree hollow) which was fantastic. We asked about the driver on the way back to the guesthouse (the owner picked us up) and he mentioned that he works with only two drivers, to ensure that guests have a great experience. It was well worth the money we spent on the safari alone!
