Vieux Port - La Canebière
This hotel had been highly recommended by a well travelled friend so we were a little disappointed to say the least. Perhaps the most unfortunate aspect was the service, which so many reviews comment on favourably. When we arrived one member was on the phone having an argument, another said she couldn't do check ins and the final one was so incompetent and charmless we felt quite unwelcome. Certainly wasn't a problem having accommodation across the road, but it would have perhaps been nice - or professional - to have taken us over there and shown us access. We tried to pop back in the evening for a drink but told very abruptly the bar was closed for a private function. Some additional staff training in customer service perhaps required! Although the hotel accommodation had been renovated recently (2017?) there was some wear and tear in the shower area that made it look a bit tatty sadly, but having said that the room we were in had very comfortable beds, was very clean and had lovely towels. Incidentals were poor but it only claims to be a 3 star hotel so no problem. Bedside lights were very irritating because you had to have both on at the same time - style over substance perhaps since they were very pretty. Breakfast was acceptable but not particularly cosy/comfortable. However very hard to find anywhere else locally that served anything better. Location was good - only 5 or so minutes to the Vieux Port and many interesting side streets with independent retailers, smart shops and cafes. Shame we had to remind the hotel that they had put one of us in a cheaper room than the one we had paid for and then we had to 'negotiate' a discount. Since we work in the hospitality business I have kindly put much of this down to 'end of seasonitis' but I don't think we shall be returning to check on any improvements!
