Very lovely ryokan, room not to spacious but this is about the worst I have to say. It‘s clean and quiet. Very friendly staff, excellent food, view from room, onsen/rotemburo and dining hall spectacular. Good choice of pillows, free coffee.

This is a large hotel located on a hill slope to the back of Higasgihagi Stn. It’s on the Hagi loop bus circuit which stops also stops at HigashiHagi Stn and the Seafood Market. We had a very good lunch at the market and the market also sells a very good range of yuzu products. We were checked into a western style bedroom but it was small and rather claustrophobic facing the hill slope on the back. So we upgraded to a large n comfortable tatami style room on the 8th facing the city n sea. This room offered a great view at sunset. The baths are huge some 1,000m2 with a large indoor baths, sauna:steam room and a variety of outdoor baths to choose from. Water was hot with ph 7.2. Dinner and breakfast were so-so.

This hotel is located right beside the Higashi Hagi Railway Station, which is the main station of the town and the long distance buses from cities in the region also stop here. The surrounding area is quite quiet but the main business area of town is not very far and the tourist spots can be reached using the local bus (there are 2 local loop bus routes: the eastern loop has a stop at the Higashi Hagi station, while the nearest stop of the western loop is a few minutes’ walk away across the river). The room of this hotel is similar to the usual business hotels in other cities, but I feel my twin room is more spacious than in most others. The shower and toilet area are separated. Room facilities and wifi works without any trouble. Standard Japanese breakfast is served in the morning with few items of western taste. Free tea / coffee is available on the drinking machine on each floor. The check-in staff speaks a bit of English, and hands out a full English information sheet with instructions on remotes to TV & air-con, information of public bath (which I did not use) and other facilities in the hotel, etc. The reception counter is unmanned from around midnight till 10 am. On check-out before 10 am, I instructed to simply drop the room key to the collection box. For baggage storage, there are self-service lockers for use at lobby, which is not free but at a lower rate than in the railway station.

A pleasure to be a guest. Spacious and refined. Private raked gardens. Ceramic museum & shop. Comfortable facilities. Separated onsen from natural springs. Gourmet ‘kieseki’ dining elegantly served in our room. Ideal location for transport, being a pleasant 5min stroll across the river from station/ bus terminus/ local hop-on/hop-off bus. They’ll drive you if you don’t want to walk! Area has a commercial feel, but Tomoe is a private oasis. Tour with hop-on/hop-off bus, or walk into old town to many potteries/ ceramic shops.

The architecture of the building fits in well with the other historical landmarks in the area. The interior of the inn too is Japanese in style, complete with tatami mats and sliding screens. Traditional Japanese cuisine is on offer. The inn is located just 5 minutes by car from Higashi-Hagi Station and guests can reserve free parking in the inn's parking lot.
