Rooms are totally dated (around 1980 s ?) however its all functioning. Beds are soft but firm enough. No airco, no minibar, no safe in de room. But flatscreen And wifi is available and candles (no lighter). Early sleepers take with earplugs as local youth is very loud and noisy in the streets. Breakfast is tasty and of good quality. Breakfast staff is loud , scream alot around the kitchen and stop serving and totally disappear 15 minutes before 11:00 - then come back later and are very surprised if u are still there and say goodbye. Lunch in the garden is a tip - really relaxed garden with sun and shade and beautiful trees. Staff at the entrance and check in are professional and very friendly. Building was in the past inhabited by family of Nassau , current royal family of the Netherlands. It still breaths a bit that time period especially the restaurant. Conclusion is that staff is direct, loud and noisy and ‘take a lot of space’ that’s runs probably back the time of the early Fries (Friesland ) were democracy was a high good, everybody was and is equal and continuous discussion and communication was and is needed to live harmoniously amoungst each other on the terps (higher grounds / islands were water was not able to come).

Stayed in Leeuwarden for 2 nights off season in January in Hotel Bar 't Anker, a typical good old inn. We'd one of the more expensive rooms (15), which was basic, but fair sized and had it all, though the TV location is a bit odd. The sink was in the room (OK with us), but shower/toilet room was kind of crampy. Rooms pretty quiet and simple straight forward breakfast was included. When you book this hotel, it's recommended to include a Thursday night. It's practice evening for the local Shanty Singers and they go on singing in the bar, till in the the last man/woman leaves the bar. Don't be afraid to sign along or if you don't know the lyrics, just move your body and dance. You don't find such place elsewhere in Leeuwarden. Pool table available in the bar, locals very friendly. Staff is very friendly too. Perfect for 1-3 nights.

As part of the hotel's 4 year anniversary we managed to book a room for a long weekend for an excellent price, including breakfast. Also regular prices appear to offer decent value for money. Covid measures were in general implemented very well. You could argue about whether a breakfast buffet is such a good idea, but it was actually managed quite well with staff and most guests keeping sufficient distance. Breakfast had a good selection of quality food and drinks, including some local specialties. Service in general was good, professional and friendly. Our room (on a mezzanine level) was spacious, well appointed, clean and quiet, with a very comfortable bed, so very pleased with that. The hotel is easily reachable by car and even though the hotel car park itself was full (hotel was fully booked), there is a public (paid) carpark right next to it, so no issue with parking even when busy. We would certainly consider staying here again when next in Leeuwarden, especially for the price we managed to book this stay for.

I loved staying the night here! I was to arrive 1:30 am and wanted to know if I’d be able to check in. They informed me I’d receive a code for the front door and one for my room. That was perfect! I slept like a baby. And the room was perfect, tiny, and with the softest bed 😍 The bathroom looked good and smelled good too. My phobia of sharing bathrooms is gone. I recommend this place to any who would like a cute place to stay in Leeuwarden. The breakfast was nice simple and organic!! 😍 The bread freshly baked and fresh orange juice offered. And though the breakfast wasn’t elaborate, it was tasty and simple and included in the stay. A 30 minute walk to the Airforce Base where I’m heading. Simply perfect. I hope to be back one day ☺️

Since my last visit to this hotel in April 2016 there has been a lot of refurbishment or at least the bedroom I had on the sixth floor had been. My 'single' room had a King sized bed in it had new carpet and the en-suite had been recently refurbished. It was quiet and more importantly for me comfortable. The in-house restaurant offered and excellent selection of meals all at competetive prices. For dinner I chose the ribe eye steak which was cooked to my liking and well presented. Staff were friendly and not overly attentive as you get in some restaurants, no one 'hurried' you to finish the meal to let more guests in. Breakfast offered a wide choice of Continental style foods and lashings of hot coffee (very important for me!) and was reasonably priced. It will be another two years when I am next back in Leeuwarden and I will try to ensure that I stay at this hotel.

Stayed two nights during a business trip. Clean comfortable room with a good wall in shower. Quiet area no issues with noise as I was on the ground floor. Also had dinner in the bar restaurant one of the nights. Big portions and good quality. Very friendly and helpful staff. The guy that checked me in was accommodating and a champion multitasker as he was running check in, the bar and also managed to get me an phone charger and iron. Typical hotel breakfast, with a cooking station for eggs etc. it starts at 6am which is handy for early starts. They also can provide a pack lunch. Would recommend if in Leeuwarden for business, but if with a family or on vacation maybe look at other hotels in the area. A colleague of mind stayed at the Fredrick in the town center which she said was very nice. The Bastion is about a 30 min walk to the town center with easy access via a viaduct under the main road that is adjacent to the hotel and then a footpath directly into the town centre.

Stunning! Beautiful! Well appointed! Modern Clean Spacious An absolute treasure! What a find! We stayed here with our 6 year old for a short mini break during the summer vacation! I often think can der valk hotel chains have a stigma attached to them!! This brand new boutique hotel has put me straight about that! Massive hotel bedroom with huge bathroom with separate bath and rain shower! We had a toilet in a separate room! Large comfy beds, air con, flat screen tv, fridge, nespresso machine and kettle! On the balcony there was a wooden bench ! The bench was so new that the hotel provided guests with a blanket so you could sit on the blanket and not get any stains or oils on your clothes We ate dinner in the restaurant on our first night - after a tiring day traveling and sight-seeing! Lots of choice on the menu! Being a strict vegetarian I was agasp that my vegetable side dish - which accompanied the main dish - contained bacon bits!!! Please can Der Volk!! Someone orders vegetarian please ensure the vegetable dude dishes don’t contain bacon !! As this and my only other complaint would be that the gym was a little small and basic and we did miss a swimming pool! You could hire boats from the small Jetty at the back of the hotel! The hotel is built in a new area and there is some building work being carried out! This doesn’t affect the hotel! Deffo stay here again! This was a great find and will certainly put Van Der Valk boutique hotels on my map!
