3.38km from Cafe le MelangeChecked in to Hotel Smartino for 4 nights for work. I’ll start with the good: We arrived before the check-in time of 3pm but managed to get our hotel rooms immediately so we were able to freshen up before heading in to the office. The staff are friendly, while they may not be fluent in English, they try their best and are always smiling. While the breakfast selection isn’t huge, it’s sufficient to keep you going until lunchtime - there are no hot items though, apart from boiled eggs and your toasted bread. The other thing that sets Smartino apart from a lot of the other hotels in Schwäbisch Hall (or even the rest of Germany) is that it has a kettle in the room, with some tea/coffee should you feel like you need a warm drink anytime. Given that the place is not near any conveniences, the hotel does have a small “pantry” of drinks and snacks that you can purchase if you get the munchies. They also do have a small room service menu. The not so good - its venue. Unless you drive, the hotel isn’t the most accessible. But that’s probably why they are able to price themselves extremely competitively. While the rooms are clean and relatively new, it is small. But that’s probably because we got the cheapest room. You may want to consider getting one of the bigger ones. Despite its size, there was still space for 2 twin beds, a little sofa and a work table. You may wish to bring your own clothes hangars since only 2 was provided. Oh, and there’s no wardrobe - there are 4 metal rods on the wall that you’ll use to hang your stuff. There’s also only 1 iron for the hotel - so you may need to request for it either prior to checking in or early enough in the day. Throughout my stay, I noted that I kept getting insects in my room - the ones that bugged me the most were spiders - they were huge by my city-life standards. Initially thought they were creepy crawling their way through under my door or some gap in the wall. It was only after a couple of days did I realise that whenever the room was cleaned daily, they would leave the window slightly ajar. Great concept in principle to let in fresh air - however I was on the first floor, facing a garden. So it meant I got my fair share of insect guests. If you decide to stay, remember to either get them to keep your window closed or to close it yourself if you are back in the hotel room early. Or just get a room on the 2nd floor. The last one which is rather hilarious is that they have an artwork of a lady hiding behind a shower curtain on the bathroom door. Unfortunately, opposite the bathroom door is a mirror which can be seen from the bed. So if you do not sleep in complete darkness, be prepared to get a shock every so often when you look in the mirror from your bed since it looks like there’s always someone else in your bathroom.
