6.77km from Campo MarzaganIt’s not often that you get to stay at a one-star hotel, but I’d say Hotel Madrid is proud of their only star. Located in a historical building with high ceilings and a historical feel to it, the hotel offers accommodation in the most beautiful square in Las Palmas, Plaza de Cairasco. The rooms are tiny (my single was about 8.5 sqm), which explains the low star rating. There’s no desk, no safe, no closet, no shelves. Only a 120 cm wide bed, two small bedside tables, a large flatscreen tv, and, fortunately, a luggage rack. Wifi was free, fast and reliable. There were sockets by the bed, so charging your devices was easy. Everything was impeccably clean, and even a 0.5 L water bottle was provided in the room on arrival. All rooms are ensuite, and the bathroom was of adequate size, with a shower with good water pressure and ample hot water. Bathroom amenities included soap, shower gel and shampoo, which is a lot for a one-star hotel. My room had a tiny balcony with two chairs, overlooking the plaza and Gabinete Literario. It was wonderful to sit on the balcony, listening to the live music that the restaurant Gabinete had arranged for their customers. Front desk staff was friendly and spoke good English. For a one-star, Hotel Madrid is not cheap. The same money will buy you a tired 3–4 star hotel in the Puerto area, but if you want to experience something different, a true gem in the old city, then you should give Madrid a try. Note, however, that the building has no lift. The location is very central, a few minutes from the Cathedral and Vegueta and a block from the Calle Mayor de Triana shopping street. There are many good restaurants close by. Parque San Telmo is a 10-minute walk away.
