Stayed here on a very quiet January weekend, and had the dining room and breakfast room to ourselves. We probably didn't see the outside and grounds at their best - it was a wet, windy January weekend but that did not matter, we chose the time to wind down after a hectic Christmas - a bit of "us" time. We had a junior suite with 4 poster bed and jacuzzi bath in the room (with a lovely shower/toilet room too). Very comfortable and spotlessly clean. The staff could not be friendlier and helpful. The food was excellent - locally sourced int he main and wonderfully presented. Yes, the bar was empty but hey, we entertained ourselves with games of pool and just chatted the weekend away. Breakfast was excellent too, very filling and plenty of choice. Now serving 2 weeks penance for the weight gain!

I recently stayed at The Pinegrove Hotel in Carlisle, as I was visiting town to see some friends. The hotel is a few minutes drive from the M6 motorway and very convenient if you want an overnight stay en route to Scotland, or if you're heading South. On arrival, I was blown away by the beautiful features of this Victorian hotel. If you're a fan of architecture (or just like to post interesting pictures on Instagram) it's worth a stay! The hotel boasts original fireplaces, tiles and even a stain glass window. I also loved the antique furniture dotted around the place. It gives the place real character. The staff were very friendly and couldn't have been more accommodating, giving us a recently furbished room which was clean, beautifully decorated and had a comfortable bed. The hotel boasts it's own bar, with a great selection of gins. Ideal for if you don't want to venture too far for a nightcap. The hotel is family run and pet friendly, which I feel adds to it's homely character. The hotel is known for it's breakfasts and I can't complain, it was delicious! They even had vegan butter!! A lovely hotel, and worth a visit!

During our driving holiday around England last year (2019) my husband and I stayed overnight at Arkale Lodge B & B in Carlisle in an ensuite room. Our hosts were Patrick and Muriel, who gave us a ground floor room, which was wonderful! No need to lug our suitcases up any stairs for once! We were able to park in the pub next door (for free!) - the pub was also a great dinner venue and SO close to our accommodation! Patrick and Muriel are really lovely people - so warm and friendly. A bonus to our stay was the lovely gifts they gave us as we were leaving the following morning - a diary for 2020, a personalised pen and a great little torch! Something to remember them by and so we could spread the word to others!

The hotel is located in the town. The legendary "super delicious Chinese restaurant" is not very popular. There may be a Chinese food that foreigners think is Chinese food. Fried chicken wings and barbecued pork are OK. There is a supermarket not far from the hotel, which is convenient for shopping. The room was basically clean and tidy, but the hygiene of the bedding was really unsatisfactory. There was blood stain on the quilt.

Carlisle Central Travelodge provided a comfortable stay with the main city centre street, Botchergate only a minutes walk away. The accommodation was excellent, sporting their bright red bathroom, a personal favourite of mine. The staff were excellent and accommodating. My only gripe is the fact that WiFi remains chargeable at Travelodge when this is standard within almost all other hotel chains. On this occasion, we had booked during a promotion therefore not a huge issue however under normal circumstances, the room rates Travelodge charge are comparable with competitors who do offer free WiFi.

We stayed for 2 nights in a small double, which was fine. Room and bathroom were clean, however the bed was very soft and uncomfortable. Woke up both days with a sore back. The location was absolutely perfect for us, and you walk out the front door to the main shopping area. The pool was closed due to COVID, but we knew that before booking, so wasn’t a problem. What annoyed us was that the family in our corridor next to room 144 were very noisy, and we were awake from about 6:30 with people coming and going and knocking doors constantly. We also booked breakfast, and it was a shambles. We ordered our tea/coffee, toast, cereal and cooked breakfasts all at once. It was only half full. The tea/coffee came and so did the toast. We then waited....and waited.....and waited for our cereal and OJ. I mentioned to a waitress and we then got our OJ, but then the cooked breakfast came and we hadn’t received the cereal yet. We just took the cooked meals as they would probably have just been reheated for us while we had our cereal. Not worth the money, and the portion size of beans was a bit cringey. I got a tastier breakfast in the Tesco on the way out of Carlisle for HALF the price. In summary, I would probably try somewhere else, which is a shame, as my first impression had been good. It’s a nice old fashioned building. Got parked at the back ok once we found the car park. You need to use the separate postcode (CA3 8HB) to find it, as the front of the hotel is pedestrianised.

Booked a 1 night stay in Carlisle at the end of our holiday in Cumbria. It was a fantastic stay in every possible way. From our arrival to departure. Everything was perfect and a real credit to Melanie & Graham who own and run the Cartref Guest House. Imacuatlly clean, well furnished and all amenities that you require. All the Covid-19 measures were put in place and it felt extremely safe for our entire stay. Allocated room 8 which is a lovely attic room. Great extras included in our room such as free water, biscuits, homemade treats and a can of Gin & Tonic. Quiet nights sleep, we did not hear a sound. Breakfast was delicious and beautifully presented. Leaving our luggage till late afternoon was not a problem. The best Guest House in Carlisle in our opinion and we would not hesitate to return or reccommend a visit to all.

Arrived at around 4pm, on checking in was asked for a swipe of my card which I handed over to then have the payment of the stay taken in full. Had every intention of paying and would have happily paid up from but that wasn’t what was requested at the time. We stayed in one of the Castle View rooms. The room was lovely, big comfy bed and bathroom large and clean with a great powerful shower. Despite a laminated note in the bedroom advising that towels etc were available on request without the need for somebody coming into your room it was never actually explained on check, or in the room that the rooms would not be serviced during the stay due to covid regulations. While this may be understandable it would have been beneficial when checking in to explain this and how to get clean towels, toilet roll etc and that the room would not be serviced. First night in Walton’s the meal and service were both fine. The second night we were left sitting for a long time before our drinks order was taken. When the meal arrived I asked for another drink and my partner asked for sauces, neither of which materialised until I went to the bar myself to chase them up mid-meal as it seemed near impossible to get any staff attention as they moved around. The service on both occasions at breakfast was poor and disorganised. We witnessed people coming in after us to have their orders taken and drinks and toast brought to them before our orders were taken. We weren’t in a hurry but we were left a long time sitting without the offer of tea / coffee. There no structure on who was serving where. At one point we were offered the table next to us breakfast. While all the staff were pleasant the default position seemed to be to apologise for poor service rather than try and get it right in the first place. Being overlooked and forgotten about once is understandable but 3 times out of 4 is not acceptable. We enjoyed the room very much but our stay was let down by the always pleasant but far too disorganised service.

Travelled to Carlisle on our UK road trip, and stopped in a Premier Inn Plus room. The hotel was having work done, so access to rooms was restricted, and in this hotel you have to go down a flight of stairs, then up two or three flights to your room. The Plus rooms were a long way from reception down a seemingly never ending corridor. The room itself was spacious, clean and well presented, well worth the extra money! Reception were helpful and informative. Purchased a meal deal, and the evening meal was a menu of takeaway meals which you had to eat in your room, although they were allowing you to sit in the bar to drink. The following morning, you were allowed to sit in the restaurant for breakfast. Bizarre! Covid measures were in place, and staff wore masks with most customers doing the same. WARNING! I ordered the Chicken curry, which includes chilli peppers which was not on the menu! They were very hot!!!

Wow!! Just returned from a nights stay in the String of Horses Inn and absolutely loved the place but the food was unbelievable. Located only 10 minutes from junction 43 of the M6 by Carlisle and is a hidden gem. Room was lovely and warm on arrival and very comfortable with tea and coffee facilities as well and we also had the 4 poster bed too. Evening meal was in the pub and was very snug and welcoming. However all I can say is the food is stunning, someone the most amazing food we have had and we overheard other tables saying the same about it too. I have the lamb tagine with rice and my wife had the Milanese chicken with mustard mash and the flavours were amazing. Other people had the monkfish curry and the fish and chips and they smelt and looked amazing too. Dessert was just as stunning...I had the cherry sundae with ice cream, meringue, cream, cherries and pistachios with my wife having the sticky toffee pudding with ice cream and despite us being full from our main we had to finish those beautiful desserts!!! Breakfast continued on the same standards with the cooked breakfast being amazing and my wife said her eggs Benedict with bacon was the best she had tasted! Complements to the chef and also to Colin who was always at hand if needed and welcoming too.

This is the second time we have stayed here and could not fault anything. We booked for 2 nights this time and arrived on Saturday morning, we were early for check in but the lovely lady on reception checked the room and told us we could check in as soon as it was ready and offered to come through to the ajoining bar and let us know when its ready. We were given the biggest room (no9) it was so spacious and very clean. We were visiting family in the area so were back and forth to the hotel throughout the 2 days so the kids could rest, it was very quiet so ideal for families. We could not fault the staff we encountered The lady on reception ( didnt catch her name unfortunately) was the same on both days and she was so friendly and lovely towards the children, the only other staff member we saw was the cleaner who was also lovely and friendly to us all. We will be booking here again for our next visit in the summer and would definitely recommend this hotel.

I stayed at Warren Guest House last June. The proprietors, Anita and Jimmy, are a lovely couple, so cheerful and welcoming; it was like staying with longtime friends. The house is clean and comfortable, and the room was very cozy with all conveniences and the bed guaranteed a good night's sleep. It's not far away from town centre, and there are places to eat a few steps away. Included in the very reasonable price is a homemade full English fry-up, with everything fresh and delicious. Though Warren House has been converted from a historic pub to a guest house, it's still got the original charm that makes it a perfect place for history buffs. Jimmy and Anita have many awards for the quality and care they take with the guest house; and take such great care of those who stay that it's not surprising that they have many loyal regulars who stay there whenever they come to Carlisle. They deserve awards for top service and ensuring your stay will be one of the best memories you have of visiting the area!

We stayed for 2 nights at Warwick Lodge, prior to our wedding at Gretna Green. Caron was really friendly and welcoming and could not do enough for us. We had a minor issue with our room on the first night which Caron resolved very quickly for us. On returning to our room for the second night (the eve of our wedding), we were met with a personal card, bottle of Prosecco and lovely (M&S) chocolates 😋 🥂 The usual range of self-service breakfast could obviously not be provided (due to Covid-19 restrictions), however everything was available on request and cooked breakfasts made to order, always with a smile and friendly chat. The guesthouse is stunning with some impressive African-themed artwork throughout. Everything had been put in place to ensure distancing and sanitisation which was really reassuring. The room had all the expected facilities and hospitality; of particular note is the shower which has amazing power (so much better than a dribbly electric one that you find in some places)! There is 1 parking space on the driveway of the property, with free parking on the road (via a permit issued from the guesthouse on arrival). It’s around 10-15 minutes walk into the town centre where there are a wide range of bars and restaurants (we ate at the Thin White Duke). While we await our formal wedding photos, were so grateful to have the informal one of us in our outfits, taken by Caron before our departure; it’s been seen by dozens of people! 😆 We look forward to returning, thank you, Andrew & Carolin
