The Ryokan is in an ancient Japanese house and is very conveniently located. The couple who own the place are very cheerful and helpful, despite their limited English and make you feel at home. The Onsen is a bonus. The bathrooms and toilets are shared and could be an issue during busy season. But there were only 3 other people while we were there so we had no issues. They also serve an excellent Japanese breakfast on request. Very close to the Zenkoji temple and easy bus ride to Nagano station. They serve an excellent Japanese breakfast.

We were there during peak season (winter time), so we paid a steep price for it. Here are some pros and cons of staying here that I would like to share: Pros: 1. There are many convenience stores nearby 2. One famous bakery just right beside the hostel, and I highly recommend to try their pecan nut and apple pies 3. 10-minute walk from the Nagano station 4. Friendly staffs 5. Overall cleanliness is acceptable Cons: 1. The room gets pretty cold at night despite the heater is turned on 2. The pillow and bed are too soft 3. The whole place is not well-lit and gets pretty dark at night 4. The kitchen is too cold despite the gas heater is provided 5. Toothbrush, toothpaste and bath towel are not provided, but you can get them with additional charge 6. Creaky floorboards and doors

Located at the bottom of Zenkoji temple mountain, this hotel provides old but quiet setting. Good to stay after a visit to the temple, and some shops, restaurants alongside the road to the Nagano station. Breakfast in the Japanese restaurant in the hotel provided a gorgeous breakfast plate with several small dishes. One of the best Japanese breakfast ever.

We were able to stay at a surprisingly low price. In the first place, it is a hotel of the JAL group, so it is fine. It's a bit old but clean and comfortable. This time the breakfast was very delicious.

So first up. The photos you see in the advert are not what you will find in the hotel. My room consisted of: torn wall paper, mould-stained paper bed lamp, specs of blood on the curtains (could have been from squashing mosquitos?), bedding that was so short it left my shoulders bare in bed (I am 5' 10'). Breakfast is very basic: bread rolls and repacked margarine and small plastic packets of jam (and black coffee). The staff are friendly, and I do feel sorry for them as they have to work in this hovel. I have stayed in probably 100 or so business hotels in my time in Japan and this was by far the worst. Pay and extra 1000 Yen and you will see the difference.

The room is a bit smaller and the natural hot spring water is really good. A coin-operated laundry room is particularly convenient and fast. Sanitation is also very good.

Normal except for location. The facility was old-fashioned. I think the lineup was good because you could choose the amenities to your liking. You may not want to use it as a couple.

We really loved our stay in Matsushiro guesthouse Hoteiya!! Our hosts were very friendly.<3 They helped us a lot to guide us what to see in the area..castle, second world war tunnel, samuraj school, royal residences and onzen. We bought their delicious homemade plum-and apricotwine. We slept tradtionally on futons on the floor, nice experience;-) The cosy, relaxed and friendly atmosphere made it easy to get to know other japanese and foreigners. We also want to thanks our hosts for driving us to the supermarket, buying our Shinkansen tickets and drive us to Nagano station!!!! With other words AMAZING SERVICE!!!! If we come back to Nagano again we will defintely stay at Hoteiya again, hugs from Sweden:-)
