We have stayed in this small hotel for many years now, the rooms are clean and functional, the staff very helpful and kind. The hotel is centrally situated a few minutes from the shopping areas and many restaurants and bars with its own private parking. The breakfasts are good and the lady serving/helping in the breakfast room, which is in the basement, is an absolute gem, charming and very helpful.FromUS$77.00

Because we were flying out of Malpensa the next day we opted for Varese over Milan for convenience, ambience and price. We also wanted to dine at the very popular Albergo Ristorante Bologna in town but didn't want to risk a noisy final night before our long-haul flight, so opted for the more secluded Palace Grand Hotel. For the same price (or less) as some tiny shirtbox in Milan you can stay at this majestic hotel, breathe some fresh mountain air, enjoy the scenery and still easily catch the Express direct to the airport. The staff were wonderful, our room overlooked the village below and the hotel lived up to its name of being grand and a palace. I was reminded of the Grand Budapest Hotel in the movie (minus Ralph Fiennes, of course). It's that sort of place, stylish and classically European, at least in the mind of these visitors from the antipodes. It is a cab ride to and from the station, obviously, but the hotel provided a shuttle to and from town for our restaurant booking. We didn't see much of Varese in such a short stay but it looked worthy of a longer look. Would I stay at the Palace Grand again? In a heartbeat - and preferably for a week, next time.FromUS$81.00

Seldom do you get the location, quality and service from a mid range priced hotel but this falls very close to achieving all 3. Service and attention given by all the staff is something that some of the big hotels need to grasp and learn from Not a huge hotel but great location, private car park, access to shops, bars & restaurant’s within 150m Access to car routes in and out of the city quite good Rooms spot on very clean, comfy bed and good shower and well topped mini bar. We loved this hotel. We were on a bike tour that included this hotel. It isn't near the center of town, but the bus stop is right across the street, and you can soon be downtown. The accommodation was above averge; we had a balcony, and a reasonably sized room. Our bicycles were stored in the basement, and the staff washed our bicycle clothing each night for the next day. The best part of our stay was the nutrition-oriented breakfasts (buffet style), attended to meticulously by the owner, his family and staff (eggs & coffee to order). The hotel made us a lunch to take on the bike ride that included home-made nutritious bars that they promised they would post the recipe for on their website. When we returned from our bike ride each day, they provided us a post-bike lunch at around 2pm which was quite a spread to cover us until dinnertime. They front desk was very helpful in arranging transportation (when needed) and provided counseling about local information. Their customer service was exceptional. Highly recommend.FromUS$78.00

Me and my boyfriend stayed for 4 nights at Horizon Wellness and Spa. We were really satisfied with the room,which was spacious,very modern,with a balcony(the balcony was not very clean,but thats probably because it was winter) and a nice bathroom. It was nice that there was instant coffee and tea there, but there were no real cups,only plastic ones(impossible to make a tea or coffee since the plastic cup would melt). Breakfast was OK, not a big variety of food,10 € per person. There was unfortunatley no street mirror on the road exit,making it hard to see the cars coming and this way dangerous. We loved the staff,absolutely friendly and helpful. They even gave me a iron so that I wouldnt have to pay for the ironing service. A bit dissapointed that the use of spa and pool was not included in the price,we did not have that at any other hotel. We really enjoyed our stay there 😊FromUS$76.00

My wife and I enjoyed an incredible treat at Al Borducan located the top of Sacra Monte overlooking an amazing view of Lake Varese. The serve Fancy foods with delicious flavors and drinks that blended well with each portion. The evening was set from the moment we arrived. The staff was well dressed and super attentive to us throughout the entire meal. The food comes in gradual portions with a fantastic crescendo between the main meal and dessert. It was almost too much deliciousness. Just a side note guys, if you're going to wine and dine your lady at a place like this be ready for the committment. It's a bit pricey but worth it if you're looking for a fantastic romantic evening!

The location is beautiful, high up the mountain in a very 'hilly' area with lovely scenery, overlooking a valley on the outskirts of the village of Santa Maria del Monte, a medieval UNESCO world heritage site. This small 10 bedroom hotel is right next door to the old funicular railway too. Our bedroom (No. 3) was lovely, comfortable, quaint and elegantly rustic with fabulous views from one of the best balconies I have ever had. We were half board and the evening meals were excellent (be aware if you book half board that the restaurant closes on Sunday evening and all day on Monday. We were lucky that the restaurant was unusually booked for a private party on the Sunday night that we stayed and the chef kindly agreed that we too could dine there that night, albeit with no menu choice which didn't matter...it was yet another really good dining experience). The chef's tasting menu which we enjoyed on one evening was very good indeed. Breakfast was basic but perfectly good offering breads, cold meats, cheeses (most days), hard boiled eggs, fresh fruit and yoghurts. Service in restaurant and hotel throughout our stay was very good and very friendly. I would dispute some of the description in the introduction at top of page. There was no mini-bar in our room. 24 hour room service was definitely not in evidence ..in fact after dinner on the first night we went upstairs to the bar for a drink to find that it was in semi-darkness with no-one there to serve you. Instead of perhaps playing some cards after dinner in the bar and 'bistro' area we retired to our room each night after dinner to watch something on our iPad as the tv did not seem to have any English speaking channels. I also cannot imagine where the conference facilities could possibly have been! Wi-fi in our room was good. This was though, a lovely stay and we would really love to return at another time of year. There is parking in the hotel's small car park which is essential as there is nowhere else to put your car. Hiring a car to get here from Milan Malpensa airport is essential and also to explore the area including Lake Maggiore which is about half an hour's drive away. Several other restaurants in the area, only one of which we managed to try for a lunch. We managed to pick the rainiest weekend you could imagine for our three night stay. This place would be so much lovelier without the wet and, if there was sun, it would be just amazing.
