0.16km from Enoteca Wine Bar L'EtruscoTrieste really isn't a fixture on the tourist trail just yet, so with a fairly baffling array of options, Gens Julia turned out to be a great choice. It's located not far from the Piazza Unita, but it might be more straightforward in practice to reach it via Via De Cavana and Via Felice Venezian. Google maps will direct you up the steps via the Basilica San Silvestro, but this is a bit of a maze, and disorientating. Davide and Frederica are great hosts, and Frederica in particular is especially proud and enthusiastic about her home town, so is a rich source of advice. The room was comfortable and a decent size, but the bathroom was adjacent rather than en suite. This seems a common feature in many B+Bs advertised in the city, but it was exclusively for our use, not a shared one. The breakfast was actually one of the better ones we had on this trip, with the typical selection of cold meats, pastries, and fruit, with proper coffee as you would expect in Trieste. The one main criticism is that the rooms all adjoin a common kitchen area and the sound travels easily. So early risers seeking early breakfasts can be clearly heard in the rooms. In addition there are quite a few steps to negotiate to the room, but Davide can help with bags. Moreover, they were very flexible about leaving luggage post checkout so that we could continue exploring before leaving.
