2.54km from Fish RestaurantThe Arka is a modern building right next to the Old Bazar. The staff are friendly and speak adequate English. Before my stay, I enquired about airport transfers and received a reply in less than an hour, which was impressive! A taxi from Skopje airport to the hotel costs 20 euros, but for 25 euros, the hotel arranges a pick-up, with the driver waiting outside customs with your name on a sign. Much appreciated, and the 5 euro premium is well worth it considering the potential hassle with taxi drivers. Note that the reception will only accept denars and credit cards, and will not exchange money. I had booked a Club Room. The name is misleading, as the room does not grant you access to a club since there is no such thing at the hotel. The room, however, is larger and comes with some extra amenities including a bathrobe and slippers. There are umbrellas in the lobby for guest use. The room was of average size and had a certain Soviet vibe (think worn out fitted carpets, desks of yellowish wood, light moss green chairs, heavy curtains, etc.) The bed was a bit soft to my liking, and it wasn’t actually a kingsize bed, but two singles put together. Wifi was fast and reliable. There was a safe in the room, as well as a 0.5 L water bottle (not replenished). The biggest letdown was that the room was lacking sockets. I had to unplug the bedside lamp to be able to charge my phone, and even the desk had no sockets available. The bathroom came with a separate bathtub and walk-in shower. Water pressure was excellent, but the water was lukewarm at best, so no hot showers here! Soap and shampoo was provided, but there was no body lotion or hair conditioner. Breakfast, included in the room rates, is served 7–10 am on the top floor, with views of the Old Bazar. There’s a splash pool in the breakfast room, apparently intended for guest use, but there was a sign forbidding entry. The unremarkable breakfast included an egg station with good, large omelettes, but otherwise the selection felt dire and basic. The hotel seemed very empty during my stay. However, the location is excellent for sightseeing and shopping in the Old Bazar. The walk to Macedonia Square in the modern centre will take at least 10 minutes. It seems that the Macedonian star system doesn’t demand much from hotels in its highest five-star category, as this hotel had been awarded five stars, which it clearly was not worth. By international standards, it might be considered on the lower end of the four star category, or perhaps three and a half stars. However, it was very moderately priced at €57 / night, so all things considered, I found the Arka to be of good value.
