My wife and I decided last minute to spend the night in York on Good Friday, and found The Fort after a quick and encouraging Google search. Obviously the accommodation is rated as a hostel, but there are apartments which are suitable for families like ours, with two young boys. The accommodation was well appointed and comfortable, with a lovely lounge area (including sofa bed) and a large flat screen TV. The bedroom had a large and very comfortable bed and en suite shower room. The apartment is finished with a separate toilet and a small kitchen, complete with cutlery and crockery etc., and even a bottle of milk! The location of the apartment is excellent as well, right on Stonegate and a couple of minutes walk (maximum) to the Minster in one direction, and the Museum Gardens in the other. Obviously, there are loads of good shops, restaurants and bars only a few seconds from the door. On that note, it is worth noting that it can be quite loud when people leave the pubs later at night/in the morning, but I didn't feel like reducing my score on that basis as it is hardly the fault of the people at The Fort. Additionally, Good Friday is obviously a fairly busy night for revellers, so I would imagine other nights - and especially week nights - would be calmer. Finally, the staff (both at The Fort and at the excellent Kennedy's around the corner) we met were all very helpful and friendly, and the price for the apartment was superb - especially given the Easter holiday and the last minute nature of the booking. Highly recommended.

What a lovely pub, its really cute and quirky and i love the outdoor space, it offers lovely food and a good selection of Beers. You certainly couldn't get a better location in York to stay in, right in the middle of things. I must say a big Thank you to David who you book the night before for a Free guided walking tour of York, this man knows so much about history and clearly loves York, it was fun and informative i would definitely recommend it, as it helps you get your bearings in the City so you can work out what you want to go back to for a more indepth look after, i'm sure we wouldn't have found some of the places if we hadn't had a tour with David, and at the end you just give him a tip, i recoomend you do this on your first day in York.

We atayed for 2 nights in Room 4 at the front, overlooking Low Petergate, a perfect location within the Walls. On entering our room, my wife was surprised and delighted to find a card, chocolates and balloons to celebrate her birthday. Our room was lovely and nicely appointed, the bed was very comfortable, plenty of storage space and a nice en-suite. Being April, it was very cold outside but there were 2 efficient heaters to keep us warm and cosy. Magnificent Yorkshire breakfast is served in the in-house Forest Restaurant, where we also enjoyed a superb dinner. The staff are excellent and the hotel's character is retained whilst kept very clean and well maintained. Galtres Lodge will now be our first choice for our York visits.

Having read some of the previous reviews (admittedly not until after booking!), we were pleasantly surprised. We were in Room 15, which was on the top floor. Throughout the whole stay, it was a very quiet room (and we mostly had the window open). Nice sound of church bells on Sunday as well. Positives: - Location was unbeatable - right in the centre, next to Shambles/Betty’s/Ivy/River - Bathroom was awesome with such a cool shower (Room 15!). - Bed was perfect for me (firm). - Staff were amazing. When we checked in, we were welcomed warmly and offered recommendations. All the staff were polite and smiley. Negatives: - Room was run down. Mirror straps had fallen off the wall, the wardrobe was quite damaged and a lot of stains/spills all over paintwork. Some lightbulbs weren’t working. - Cleanliness wasn’t great. The floor hadn’t been hoovered properly and the bed frame was thick with dust and I needed to wash my hands after opening a window. Small things, like tissue boxes being empty, were other little annoyances, but as we had in our our bag, we forgot to ask. The bathroom was very clean though. The location and staff are the saving grace here. We paid around £160 a night and were disappointed at that price - it was too expensive for the quality of the room, but certainly not a bad experience overall.

very very good. Having encountered the most speechless staying experience in Edinburgh before arriving in York, all the staff at this hotel-really, all, were very friendly, polite and pleasant. Talk about the room, although it is an old building but has just been renovated, so the room facilities are modern, warm and comfortable, and the full set of baths are all cole & lewis. We lived on the 3rd floor this time without an elevator, but after we checked in, we went out to play. When we returned to the hotel, our luggage was already delivered to the room. Opposite York Church, and easy access to other attractions such as Butcher Street, there is a Costa across diagonally. The hotel's own restaurant seems to be small and well-known, but we only stayed for one day and really had no chance to try it. About 10 minutes walk from the train station. It should be the most comfortable stay in this half month.

Warm welcome and we were able to check in early as our room was already available. We chose a double character room which was really nice. It does get rather warm so I advise to open windows in the room. There were tea and coffee facilities and the bathroom with jacuzzi had all the toiletries you would need. Couple of minor things was attention to detail in room (12) where pipe work in bathroom was broken but this I suppose adds character to the building and did not affect our stay. The restaurant was ok but the menu choice is limited. Plus when we went for dinner our server could not confirm at our end we had already prepaid for dinner when we booked. Plus staff could not advise what flavour the soup was and had to go away and check. Little things like this took away some of the service I expected for what we paid. The breakfast too is vey light and not substantial unless you eat a full English breakfast ie once you pick your choice that is it and can’t have anything else other than what you choose. No offer to refill our tea and coffee either. Although nice I would not stay again due to issues mentioned and expected better for the price paid

The Lamb & Lion, where all that's special about the historical city of York can be celebrated under one roof.Grafted into the ancient stone of the city itself, this is a pub rich in old English character - the ideal place to enjoy hearty, unpretentious food alongside a pint or two of real ale or a glass of fine wine. Overlooked by the world famous York Minster, it's the perfect base for any visit to York, with luxuriously appointed rooms looking out towards the Minster on one side and the ancient city gate to the other.

A special family room, two adults and two children. Breakfast seems to be all in the UK. The bread is very crisp and delicious, sausages, potato cakes, yogurt, mushrooms, because the British food is expensive and unpalatable, the breakfast is the most satisfying. Overall the breakfast was very good. Yorktown is very small and can be strolled in one day, but if you live for a long time, you can develop outside the city, at least strolling around York's Outlets, Howard's married Howard Castle. Hotel location is very good, 10 minutes walk from the train station, you can see York Minster by the bridge, there is a museum park at the bridge. There are also many stations around.

Stayed here with my girlfriend and I asked the hotel if they could sort anything out for me to make it a little bit ro***tic as it was her birthday. This was no issue for them at all. My girlfriend was surprised and the smile on her face was the best thing ever. I ended up paying for an extra night which was promptly sorted for me. Cannot thank the hotel enough. 2519 Great value for money Review of Astor York Pending review I was heading to York for the Christmas market and, knowing that I would spend most of my time out and about, wanted my accommodation to be as inexpensive as possible. A weekend at the Astor York set me back less than £40, and I would say I'm grateful I stayed here for more reasons than just the low price. I hadn't realised that the Christmas market closes quite early, and I found myself back at the hostel earlier than I anticipated. Luckily, there is a common area where you can watch Netflix with the other guests – a nice treat at the end of a cold day. I was admittedly a bit taken aback by the very old-fashioned bathrooms that look straight out of the 1960s. But the hostel was clean and well-maintained. My 30-bed dorm did not feel too crowded, and I was grateful for the cages under beds. My one gripe about the dorm room would be a lack of sockets and lights at beds; it was impossible to charge my phone as I was on the top bunk, so I had to charge it in the common area instead. While I only needed to use the fridge, it looked like the kitchen was well-stocked and spacious. There was also a little bar that did happy hour, though I never made it back early enough to take advantage. The location is a bit of a walk from York's city centre. However, it's quite an easy route, and it's also convenient for accessing the train station. I recommend getting up and out a bit earlier and walking along the ancient wall from Micklegate, which is not far from the hostel. Overall, my stay was great value for money and I'd recommend Astor York to any solo travellers.

A lovely hotel, very clean, good quality furniture, though a little dated. Rooms rather small but nicely decorated. Bed comfy but a bit high, good quality bedding. No lift, which was a bit of a problem as my mobility is limited, and the first floor bedrooms were up 2 small flights of stairs. The staff were very friendly and helpful, They kindly changed our first room as it had a bath, which I couldn't get in to, for a room with a walk in shower. The lounge and bar area was pleasant and comfortable, although a little cool. We didn't eat there as the restaurant was fully booked, so can't comment on food or dining area. It's out of the town centre but only took about 15 minutes to walk, probably less for a younger, fitter person. All in all a very nice hotel.

On check in we were handed a room card and told ‘the lifts are over there’. No further information was given. No details about breakfast or check out times. We were staying 2 nights and by 4pm the first day the room had not been cleaned. When I went down to reception to ask for tea and milk for the room, as it had not been serviced, I was offered no apology. Since management have informed me rooms may not be service until 6pm! Who exactly that’s helpful to I don’t know. The view of a dirty mattress and kids drinking on the roof outside the bedroom windows just topped it off. The rooms are form over function. For the price paid plastic cups in the rooms to my mind are not acceptable. Management’s attempt to appease saying the modern concept of the hotel isn’t for everyone fails to cover the actual issues here. The problem was the poor service. Ignore the trendy pics on the website, I’ve stayed in better premier inn’s.

Lovely hotel and perhaps the best hotel I have lived in in England. The hotel is located in the south of York. It is like a typical family house in the UK. Both nights I lived there and I felt like I was back at my home. The room was big and warm with three beds which are rare in other hotels and this provided the best experience for us because we are a group of three. The bathroom is also spacious. The hotel provided us with sugar, tea and milk bags in our room. The service was quite considerate. The free breakfast was big and tasted pretty good. English breakfast in particular. The staffs were kind and helpful. Some of them chatted with us for a few minutes and recommended us many good places to visit around York and Fulford. What's more memorable to me was their sense of humour. The door lock to our room needed an old and traditional style key to open, I must say it was a bit difficult for us who are used to electronic locks, that's when the staff came over to help us and joked that this Victorian architecture is really tricky. This made me laugh happily for a day.

We’re here for three nights and it’s our last night today. Positives: The breakfast is pretty good with a large choice for everyone. The bed is comfy Negatives: The hotel from outside looks very dated and this runs inside too. The rooms are very dated and extremely small with cracks up the wall. The bedrooms have pointless shelves next to the bed - just put side cabinets there instead. There are no plug sockets next to the bed either. The bathrooms are tiny. To open the door one must step right next to the toilet just to get through. I’ve been to many Holiday Inns and I’ve never experienced a bathroom of this size. We always travel with toiletries, but it’s a concern for those who don’t, as the soaps that they provide don’t actually come out of the bottles. The most griping issue I have with this hotel is the cleanliness. There is paint coming off the walls, there is mould in the shower area. It’s just a mess. We asked for the room to be cleaned and the cleaners were literally outside our room servicing the room opposite but they completely missed our room. We got back from a day out and the sign on our door was still there asking to be cleaned. I don’t know what’s going on with this place but serious discussions need to be had with the cleaning team and general maintenance people. If we ever come to York again, we will definitely give this place a miss.

The first time I experienced the Youth Travel, I almost fled in the middle of the night. There was a boy who brought the girl back. After more than an hour, the people in the room sighed. This quality is really uneven and feels pitiful. Such a private matter can only be solved in a dormitory. What fun is there? ! The hostel is in the old building next to the city gate. There are more than 10 people, but there is also a small bathroom. The overall sanitation situation should be OK. Anyway, I didn’t dare to take a bath. After I fell asleep, I got up early and fled. .

Unexpectedly, this price is more expensive than our Hilton in London but the rooms are smaller and the facilities are old. Well on first impression when you are directed to your room and the receptionist says, you can find your room by walking to the far end of the carpark and you see what looks like a converted garage, the expectations aren't great. But what a surprise a huge room massive bed large screen TV, and spotlessly clean concerns totally over. Breakfast was amazing all fresh buffet toast, fruit etc. Full cooked breakfast all local and fresh. The restaurant staff are all hardworking friendly and very attentive, free flowing coffee top ups. All in all was a last minute break but will definitely return, amazing hotel in a great place.

Don't try to compare it with the domestic Marriott, which is the highest Samsung level. The rooms are simply decorated, the facilities are average and the sanitation is not good. Breakfast is single, one sample per day.

Me and my boyfriend stayed here the weekend before halloween for a little getaway. Overall we enjoyed the experience. We arrived in York after a 6 hour drive, arriving at about 2pm. Greeted by a friendly barman he told us where we were welcome to park (on site free parking), before showing us to our room. Check in was super easy, no desposit or faffing with paperwork to get checked in, just told him my name and he showed us to our room, chatting away about the best direction to get in to town. Side note, he advised us the best route in to the center of York was a 10 minute walk down the river and he was right, it was beautiful. The area is great! you can reach the shambles on a slow stroll in 15 minutes, We got an uber back one night from near York station as we were tired for £4. The room (room 4) was a comfortable for us. You are getting what you pay for, this isn't a 5 star hotel, it's a old traditional pub. Things are a bit worn out, in my opinion that's character. The wall paper is a bit dated, but the ceilings are high and make the room feel bigger and there is tea and coffee, a TV and lots of natural light. The bathroom is small, with a standing shower, my boyfriend is 6 foot was showered comfortably in there. However upon arrival there was a poo in the toilet! I think it hadn't been fully flushed by the previous guests and made its way back round the ubend to greet us, lucky we have a good sense of humour and just flushed it away. The bed however felt brand new, seriously I would have brought that mattress home if I could have. It was the most comfortable mattress I've ever slept on during a trip away. My partner however, did think it was to soft.  Now let's talk noise. This is a operational pub! These reviews advising that "we got no sleep, the pub was to loud", are ridiculous. What did you expect? Pubs are busy and loud and people are drinking and having a good time, after 11.30 the pub closes and this is no longer an issue. The real noise issue is the pipes! Our first night I slept terrible, the radiator clanging evey minute or so was like sensory torture. I'm a light sleeper so this was a real issue for me, however the second night it seemed to improve greatly and I slept much easier. The walls are thin, you will hear your neighbours but we were out and about most of the time so we barely heard ours. We didn't have a drink in the pub, I dress in a non offensive but alternative fashion and upon arriving back after our days adventures, one of the younger customers of the pub took it upon himself to drunkenly start taking the piss out of me. This did make me uncomfortable however its not like its never happened before, people suck, we move on. However it meant we avoided drinking in the bar. Overall this was a good experience but not perfect, the staff are super friendly and happy to give you tips for the town, the rooms are average, the beds are comfortable and the location is good. However those pipes were an issue for me, I w

Good clean hostel, had a great experience, I arrived early but the receptionist was very understanding and allowed me to check in slightly earlier than normal which was a great help. The room was clean, beds were really comfortable, bit of a maze but overall really nice. Had a slight issue with hit water in the morning, however I put this down to simply being that a lot of people were using the showers and therefore pressure dropped. After ten minutes the issue resolved itself. Check out time is a bit early and it would be good if they offered later check out. Rooms are ensuite and comfortable with a radiator that is really fast at warming the whole room up. One benefit is the hostel is located in. Quiet area which makes falling asleep easy as anything. My only gripe is that the rooms would be better served with twin beds and having the option of a chair to sit on. Other than that it was ideal

I can honestly say this is one of the best hotels I have stayed in. Everything about it is perfect. The hotel which was once a country house for a very wealthy man has retained its luxury and charm. There is a beautiful drawing room where you can be served refreshments and delicious wines if you wish. There are also similar rooms such as a library where you can read the daily newspapers on offer, magazines etc. You are also able to sit out on the terrace and overlook the lovely extensive grounds. We had afternoon tea sat in the garden and it was the best we had eaten. I understand the cakes are made on the premises. We also had our evening meals in the restaurant. The food is amazing and so well presented. There is an extensive wine list of very good quality wines. The breakfast was top quality too with fresh fruit and a large choice of cooked breakfasts made to order.. We loved the fact that there wasn't a bar with a tv blaring out sport or even rubbish music which you seem to get even in the higher quality hotels these days. The pool was quite big, not very busy and just the right temperature. There is a Spa but I didn't try it, although the treatments looked interesting. All the staff in this hotel are an asset to the hotel. The helpful doormen, waiters, reception staff and cleaners. Everyone is so polite and they can't do enough for you. You really feel spoilt. Our room was lovely and it was spotlessly clean as was the whole hotel. Such a comfy bed. We intended to stay for two nights but enjoyed it so much we added on an extra day and we are looking at returning at the end of next month. The experience was so relaxing and enjoyable. We live in Derbyshire and decided to treat our grandsons, who live in Essex, to a trip to York when they came to stay with us at half term. My wife chose Apple House as it had good reviews, had ample parking, and was within easy walking distance of the attractions we had booked to visit, namely The Yorvic Centre and The Railway Museum. Apple House turned out to be an excellent choice. A warm welcome from the friendly owners and spotless rooms. We had the family room with a second bedroom with bunks for the boys. The 12 year old has a broad experience of hotels and his comment was that it was up there with the best! The breakfast was superb, and set us up well for a day sightseeing. I would recommend Apple House to anyone wanting to visit York without having to worry about car parking.

Reception staff very welcoming and friendly. Entrance loby and toilets are stunning and very clean. Sadly, however that was as good as it got. When we first entered our room it smelt very badly of cigarette smoke and was not clean, albeit a big lovely space. We found mould in the windows, dirt on the bedding and doors. We also found a plastic cup on the floor. We did not have a good night sleep either. The ventilation system was extremely noisy and there was no way of turning this off which also made the room hot. We were on the top floor yet it sounded like we could hear people walking around above us which must have also been the heating? We were also surprised to not see any hotel information in the room such as how to call reception or the emergency evacuation procedure? However the tea/coffee supplied in the room was ample. We were then treated to masonry drilling from 8am which was non-stop - not ideal for what was meant to be a relaxing break. The breakfast was ok but we were not offered any condiments or additional drinks. At checkout again staff were friendly but did not ask how the stay was and therefore no opportunity to address the issues above. Benefit is the location, easy walk into the town.

Don't have any expectations for any international five-star hotel in the UK. The price of this hotel is the cheapest this trip. After all, it is a small town with the smallest rooms. I drove 350 kilometers from Edinburgh to York, and then drove 350 kilometers from York back to London. York is a small town. It’s enough to stay for one night, but there is nothing to go around. Room: Shows 20 square meters, the actual maximum is 15 square meters, and the two boxes can barely be opened flat. Service: Call room service/house keeping at 8:30 in the evening but no one answers, no one goes to reception directly~~~ Parking: There is a special hotel parking lot with few parking spaces. When we went there was only a marginal position, but we did not charge us for parking Breakfast: Book a day in advance as long as 12 pounds per person, ordering buffet, it is strongly recommended to book hotel breakfast, because the whole street is not open in the morning~~

Very very satisfied! ! First of all, the hotel environment is very quiet. Secondly, the front desk of the hotel is gentle and reliable, and helped us to play a taxi. The room is also very big, and the sofa bed is bigger than the ordinary single bed. The sofa bed is put in place, and covered with quilts and blankets, and guests’ towels are also well prepared. The bathroom and toilet are separated, so it is suitable for three people. The mirror is also very big. It's worth living and I like it too much.

A very nice hotel on the banks of the river Ouse! We arrived Really early hoping to just be allowed to store our bags, but we’re very fortunately told that our room was ready and we could check in straight away!! The room was clean, well lit and with a view of the river which was a real bonus. The hotel is very close to two bridges which enabled us to do lots of site seeing. The staff were very friendly and professional and the complementary breakfast was very tasty.

Where to start…. From the pre arrival correspondence from Jason to the Breakfast prior to leaving our stay was amazing. The establishment is situated only a 5 minute stroll from the Cathedral and a parking certificate for bays close to the B&B ensure that you are not dragging your luggage for great distances or paying over the top city parking fees. On entry Jason introduced himself and was both friendly and professional in all aspects. The room ( we stayed in room 1) was one, if not the cleanest of any room we have stayed at…and we have stayed at quite a few. The room has everything you need inc an iron, ironing board, plug in heater, cooling fan and the usual coffee and tea supplies. I would definitely recommend that if you are planning a stay in York then give this little gem a go. You won’t be disappointed. Thank you for making our stay stress free Jason ( and the team). We will be back! Gary & Faye

Family hotel, the room is very spacious, the facilities are new, the breakfast is good. There was a parking space on the roadside, and the proprietress stopped in the small courtyard of the hotel and received the parking fee the next day. It is estimated that she will not receive parking fees when she stops at the roadside. The railroad is outside the window, but it is not very noisy, and people who are not sensitive should have no influence. No elevator, big box, 3rd floor, need arm strength.

The size of the room is adequate, with two inside and out on the top floor. It is a hotel similar to the one common in foreign countries, with a restaurant downstairs and guest rooms upstairs. The scale is not large, so it is estimated that there are seven or eight rooms. The hotel reached the city wall, which was less than ten minutes. The hotel has a special parking lot, and the service attitude of the owner is also very good. Breakfast is in the form of an English-style single order, and the quality and service are OK. Anyway, the English breakfast is almost the same.
