Going up in the funicular to Certaldo Alto and looking at the constructions was like traveling back in time. Once I arrived to Antica Torre del Borgo this cheerful lady came downstairs to welcome me and help me with my luggage. I arrived before the check in time but I was allowed to leave my stuff inside and get ready to do a tour while the room was prepared. It was tough to make it to the top with a 12 kg carry-on and a small backpack as of course it is a tower which implies a lot of steps but this guarantee the best view. Room was spotless with a comfortable bed and a frigo bar, I just couldn't make the heater work at night so it was little bit cold but just put some warm pijamas and it was fine. Breakfast was very nice and the kitchen was adorable so as the living room, I only stayed 1 night as there was no more availability but I would stay longer if possible. I was also allowed to keep my lugagge inside while going around on my check out day. The only minus is that breakfast is served during a restricted time so if you are on holidays and wanted to rest more you will miss it and you are not allowed to use the kitchen by yourself.

This was one of my favorite accommodations in my Tuscany trip because it was so unique! It’s located close to Certaldo a medieval hamlet in the heart of the Val d’Elsa which is incredibly charming and worth spending a few hours in. It is also where the famous Italian writer Boccaccio (author of Decameron) was born. Bocaccio was a great fan of Dante Alighieri, and our room in Podere Benintendi was inspired after Dante! Some of his books were displayed as well as a drawing of his unequivocal face profile on one of the walls and a quote from Dante’s Paradiso on the other. The room has unique pieces of decoration such as an amazing chair-nigh-table-and-lamp piece of furniture. When I woke up here and peeked through the window and couldn’t believe my eyes! Podere Benintendi is located at the top of a hill and in that foggy morning, we were sitting above the clouds. The view was unbelievable and I felt so blessed of having been able to experience it. After documenting that enchanting morning through photos and videos, we went to the lobby for breakfast which was extremely complete with lots of home made delicacies and many options to choose from. We then spent the morning exploring the estate as there is a lake, an aromatic herb garden, and nice quaint corners with sculptures or fun details spread allover. There’s also a pool, a gym, a billiard room and a shop where they sell their self branded wine, limoncello, marmalade and olive oil at very competitive prices.

Beautifully situated in the heart of Tuscany, this rustic old villa is the place to stay when you visit Tuscany. Florence, Sienna, Pisa, San Gimignano, Volterra and others are all within an easy ride away. Even Cinque Terre is an hour and a half away. Il Vicario was our center for us to explore Tuscany. We spent 5 beautiful days and nights there and wished we had more. The villa is situated 4 kms from San Gimignano in an awesome setting. The views, the peacefulness, the aroma of nature were all incredible. Coupled with the friendliness, hospitality and amazing cooking of the owner, Fulvio, and his niece Katia, we had the best we could have expected. Very clean and tastefully decorated rooms, beautifully arranged dining areas and well manicured grounds, provided the perfect ambiance for rest and relaxation. A very sumptuous continental bkfst was offered every morning and upon request you could enjoy a 3 course dinner, each course paired with a glass of wine, for only 25 Euros per person. The dinner, prepared by Fulvio, and accredited chef, and his niece Katia, was delicious. It was also convenient, as you wrapped-up the day and you dined in the villa, with wine, with your room only steps away. We took full advantage of this feature and we had no regrets(highly recommended). We loved the place and enjoyed our stay there. We are planning to go back soon.

We visited il Castagnolino recently in March for lunch & met Carmela, who owns the property. She rents out the villas and also conducts cooking class. Her property is small and cosy. We had a beautiful lunch there personally prepared by Carmella. She also showed us the various produce of her farm. Worth mentioning is the saffron she produces ( only 200g per year!!) and also extra virgin olive oil which was so yummy. If you fancy a quiet and scenic farm stay, visit il castagnolino san gimignano!

The hotel/house is gorgeous outside, it’s old stone house, so if you like that kind of style you will like it for sure. Inside - interior is OK, following the style, but it’s not as impressive as exterior... Rooms are nice, but, for example- blankets are like from the WWII, literally, old, scratchy, awful, kind of dirty and WITHOUT any cover! There are two employees: one at the “reception” and a cleaning lady. They don’t speak English - she doesn’t speak at all, and he knows literally few words. Whenever we tried to ask them something or to apply an “irregularity” they like didn’t understand, especially she, even if you physically show her what is wrong... Then, it was very cold beginning of the spring, and the heat did not work properly! We got froze, first night especially (just to mention that we were with a kid)! The heat was turned on and off periodically, and it was old fashioned and noisy (it was turned on and off and during the night too)! Our toilet got broke, the technician came next day, so we were without toilet for 24 hours (repeat, with a child)... “Luckily” we had another room, where our cousin stayed, so that night he left the door of his room unlocked 🙄, so we used his toilet... Breakfast was very very basic, coffee was great (as expected 😉)... The area is beautiful, it’s Tuscany though... If you want to visit Tuscany’s most “famous” sites/cities (to be quite close to them, by car off course) and at the same time to feel a little bit Tuscany’s country side life, then I suggest you Country house Il Castagnolo (the price is OK), but be aware, and come during the warm months... 😉

We booked the Rocco Degli Olivi for our 10 day stay , for our Pre and post wedding celebrations in July 2017 . We booked 7 rooms .From the second we arrived we had the warmest welcome from Alessandro , Manfredi & their wonderful staff . My husband and I got married at Certaldo Alto, a medieval village nearby , it was stuff made of fairytales. Our 4 adult children and their partners and our granddaughter were made so welcome and comfortable . The rooms and bathrooms were perfect , with beautiful furniture, comfy beds and breathtaking views . On the evenings Alessandro cooked we took full advantage and enjoyed eating Al fresco at a long family table . I am a coeliac and one of our party was vegetarian and we were catered for with ease . If your into your food and wine . This man can cook !!! We requested a buffet for our Pre wedding lunch, as we got married at 5pm when it was a little cooler and it was spectacular. I was able to have my hair done in our bedroom and my stunning flowers were delivered by a local florist . We used a local wedding planner to enable paperwork and ease communication and it all went without a hitch . The pool bar was stocked and opened for us when we arrived back after the wedding and our hosts joined us in a fabulous party down by the pool allowing us to have music and provided nibbles late into the night . We enjoyed meeting other guests , some staying for one night passing through and others who had been many times before . It is hard to describe the tranquility in this magical little spot . At breakfast , as we all just glazed over admiring the views, taking in that early sun as we were refilled with the best coffee I have ever tasted, our adult children would regularly ask us how on Earth we had found such an idyllic retreat for us all to stay. To be honest we read the reviews, liked what we saw, we knew we wanted a typical Tuscan farmhouse with great hosts . We flew out the sept before and popped in to meet Alessandro and we knew straight away it was perfect for us . He has worked tirelessly over years to convert this building and stables etc into what you see now . Manfredi was so kind to us and went above and beyond to help us when my husband had a medical hiccup . These 2 brothers are amazing at what they do. We would re visit in a heartbeat, perhaps we will choose an anniversary . Do not hesitate to add this magical place to your travel list . The Waltons

Most relaxing and elegant Tuscan experience - Peaceful and very quiet place on a hill, among olive and cypress trees, far from streets and other houses. Spacious gardens with many romantic corners. - Stone house of character, prepared with a lot of taste, personally chosen antic furniture in Tuscan style, all matches perfectly and is very comfortable. - Big (approx 20 m) clean pool among olive trees, swimming in the company of birds (including the bird called Hoopoe!) and cicadas. - Great breakfast, savory and sweet, served in the garden, with a view on Tuscan hills and a proper espresso. - Direct access to the restaurant of the place on the same hill, with fresh products and very good cuisine, perfect to enjoy a delicate pasta dish or salad and fresh beer after swimming. - If you ever leave the place, and if the sweet Roe Deers from the fieds nearby let you drive through, in 50 minutes you are in Florence and other UNESCO towns. - The host and all staff are very kind, professional and non-intrusive. Cant wait to come back and we mean it:) Marion&Maciej
