      My partner and I booked an overnight stay in a queen cabin with fireplace. We would not stay here again. The room was tidy, but the bed and pillows had seen better years. The fireplace leaked smoke back into the room, so much that it stung my eyes. (My partner grew up with a wood-burning fireplace in his home and assures me that this is unusual.) The staff were rude. We showed up at 6:30 p.m. on a rainy Thursday and had questions about nearby dinner options and how to access the hotel's wifi. The staff gave us curt responses. I'm glad I asked about whether we should show up at 7:30 or 8:00 for dinner because we would have gone hungry if we had not gotten there by 7:30. We stayed there the week after CA dropped most of its indoor mask mandates, and during the 36 hours we were at the lodge, we saw only one employee wearing a mask while indoors. I would at least expect employees to put on a mask when interacting with customers who are wearing masks, but I guess that's too much to expect here. The restaurant food was terrible and expensive. We ordered a burger, a stir fry, and a bottle of beer to share and spent $60. Literally the only redeeming quality of Big Sur Lodge is that it's located inside the park.
