Very kind and accommodating staff, from our first email contact until we checked out and said good bye at the train station. We received much helpful advice about which room would best meet our preferences when we wrote and asked about the options. Our room was lovely and large with a great view overlooking the city from floor to ceiling expansive windows. Excellent and beautiful meals were presented by our attentive personal servers in a private room. We stayed 3 nights and the chef went out of his way to give us different menus for each meal. Our server told us that most people do not stay so long, and menus are repeated, but the chef enjoyed making special meals for us so we did not have to eat the same thing twice. For each meal we were presented with a written out menu in English and Japanese. The presentation was exquisite and the food was plentiful. Daily sweets were left for us in our room along with an information sheet including the weather forecast for the next day. The onsen was quite pleasant but it was a long walk from our room. In fact, the expansive property required a lot of walking to get from one area to another. This would be no problem except for the fact that getting to the lobby required a walk out of doors in the cold. Umbrellas are provided next to each exit door just in case. The property is set in a pretty and photographable garden with three Sukiya-zukuri Japanese houses. The walk up the hill to the lobby can be strenuous if you are not used to walking up hills should you decide to take a look around the neighborhood. There is a convenient back gateway which leads to a walking trail to Kanamararuza Theater, the old kabuki playhouse, Kotohira-gū, Kotohira Park, and Mount Zozu. Do walk to the inner shrine at the top of the 1368 steps which we have now done on 2 visits to Kotohira. They offer a free shuttle from and to the train station, just let the ryokan desk staff know your arrival and departure time. We informed them by email of our arrival time and the shuttle was at the station for us. We loved it here and would gladly return!

The staff here are so welcoming, courteous and helpful. The hotel is well situated for the town, kabuki theatre and the shrines. It is a typical Japanese hotel with traditional rooms and full en suite facilities. The picture windows in the room presented a pleasant vista. Yakuta available. Onsen both inside and outside. The outside (ladies) onsen had roses in the water and the gents Onsen had oranges. Umbrellas, sticks, towels and hats are available to borrow. We stayed for 2 nights in room 618 on a breakfast and dinner basis. Dinner is traditional Japanese fare and beautifully presented and excellent quality. There is so much food though and we could never finish it and felt quite guilty at the waste. As others have mentioned English is limited for conversation but is more than adequate for service and requests (and it is Japan so try out a few words!). Smiles always work. Well recommended.

It takes less than 15 minutes from the Qinping Station to navigate to the hotel with google navigation. There is a big supermarket opposite the hotel, and it is very convenient to have Rosen next to it. On the 7th floor, there is a viewing bubble, and the lady has to go to the front desk to get the password every day. However, the room facilities are old and it seems that the hotel is still some years old. There is a Taiwanese brother at the front desk who speaks Chinese. Each map has hand-painted marks, which is very intimate!

This was a nice hotel experience for us and the price was relatively good for a ryokan. We actually got an option without the in-room meal, which we really enjoyed because of the nearby udon and freedom it gives us. the fact that they provide such an option is really a good quality of the hotel. The room was clean and the bath was quite nice. They change the baths in the morning so it is possible to experience both types of baths. One bath has a "warm" sauna rather than hot and the other bath has several different varieties of herbal baths. Walking around you can find a lot of different kinds of art and pottery, some of it very large and nice. We noticed a lot of people just ignoring all this, so it is worth stopping and taking a look around if you go to the hotel. They also had a robot in the lobby for the kids to play with. The room came with quite a few sweets and complimentary tea. More sweets than I am used to receiving in hotels, even in Japan. It also came with all the usual amenities. The staff were fine and accommodating. we had no issues. Parking was also free if you stay the night, which is much cheaper than the 1000 yen charged for people just visiting the shrine nearby.

Base on Tripadvisor reviews and ranking I would have book Kotohira Kadan or Kotohira Grand, but after coming across Shikishimakan it was a no brainer to choose this hotel. First it was brand new, just opened in Sep 2019. Second it was located right at the shopping street of Kotohira and their room rate was lower than others because they are still at new opening promotion. We are a family of four and they have several type of two bedroom units for 4. We choose the 49 sq m Forth room with Private Open Air Bath which is located in the Main building. We drove there from Iya Valley and parked at their very spacious car park located behind the hotel. A parking attendant was there to guide us to the hotel via the back gate. Inside the hotel it was spotless clean as everyone have to take out their shoes and keep them at lockers located near the entrance. Now about the Forth room, it was spacious but we could not find a proper space to place our luggage. The balcony face an old building(see photo) and when we try to ask for a room with a better view, the manager said that all rooms with open air bath has about the same view. However the cleanliness, layout and design of the Forth room more than makeup that disappointment. We have dinner at the famous Kagawa Roast Chicken restaurant located just 100m across the hotel. That was definitely a cheaper and more delicious option than including dinner in the booking. They have two public and four private onsens. We were able to use all the onsen as the hotel is not crowded yet. After 10 pm this hotel provide free udon for hungry guest. Breakfast was semi Japanese buffet with many choices of food plus free flow of Udon and fruit juices. Checking out was swift as we have paid the hotel in full via Expedia. How was this hotel not ranked highly in Tripadvisor is a waste. I suggest Tripadvisor to include a category for new hotels (less than 1 year old) for every city and country.

The Koubaitei is an upscale Japanese-style hotel with an emphasis on service and comfort. My wife and I stayed here for 2 nights in mid-May, ‘18 on a small group tour composed of mostly British and Americans. Of the hotels we stayed in during our month-long visit to Japan, this was one of our favorites and we strongly recommend it if you are looking for a taste of Japanese hospitality at its finest, and you are ok with not being able to speak Japanese. Although some of the staff speak a small amount of English and westerners are warmly welcomed, this is most definitely a Japanese hotel – there is no English on the outside of the building and very little elsewhere. That aside, the staff were very friendly and attentive, obviously determined to make your stay pleasant. The Koubaitai is an easy walk from the JR station, though as part of its high level of service the hotel sent a small coach for our group and our luggage. The hotel is about a 10-minute walk to the main old-town approach to the Konpira-san temple, where there are a number of restaurants and shops. The lobby area is a stunning, high-ceiling open area with a wall of glass looking into a beautiful garden, and lots of comfortable places to sit and talk. Our room (907) was one of the largest we had during our month-long visit to Japan. It was attractive and well appointed, with the usual central table, a side table, and a mini-bar with tea-making facilities. Being in the Japanese style, the beds were futons placed on the room’s tatami mats while we were at dinner. They were fairly comfortable, even the firm rice-hull pillows. The bathroom was good-sized and attractive, with a separate rooms for the vanity, shower/tub (Onsen-style), and the usual Japanese starship captain’s chair toilet. The hotel baths were downstairs on the ground floor and were beautiful, with both indoor and outdoor pools. We had two excellent banquet-style meals during our stay, but since these were served to our group in a private room we can’t comment on the restaurant ala carte menu. The breakfast buffet was served in the restaurant, with two serving areas featuring a wide array of Japanese and western dishes. Everything we had was very good. The restaurant setting was off the lobby and was very pleasant. The Koubaitei is an excellent hotel and we don’t hesitate to recommend it. We stayed as part of a group, but we wouldn’t hesitate to return here as a couple.
