0.73km from John S Harris ParkWe picked this hotel for its proximity to Retama Race Park where we needed to evaluate one of our horses in training. We were out of the hotel parking lot and at our Retama Park barn in three minutes....perfect location for us. My wife and I were concerned about the negative reviews posted during the hotel's renovations, but we had a much better experience. We didn't see any remodeling in progress, but apparently work is still being done on the top floor. We stayed on the second floor and everything was nice and updated. The room seemed to be nicely refreshed with new paint, new carpet and new bedding. The room was very clean. We had a refrigerator, microwave and coffee pot. My wife loves a shower with good water pressure and lots of hot water...and this shower was great. The grounds were clean, well lighted and the landscaping was nice. The television could have been larger and the channels easier to identify on the Spectrum Cable system. There were lots of channels including HBO and Showtime. Check-in was fast and there were free USA Today papers in the lobby. The minor gripes are with the wall AC that did not circulate the air very well....this will be more critical in the upcoming summer months. Also, the cover of the AC fell off when we opened the unit to turn it on. It was easily replaced, but surprising. There was road noise from I-35, but we slept well. We did see the outer sliding doors were motorized to open, but were obviously broken.....the second set of entry doors worked fine. We are not sure why the ownership group would invest so heavily in renovations but not repair the first door you come through. The complimentary hot breakfast was fine for selection. All your continental choices were available and the hot selections were scrambled eggs and sausage links. The fruit selection was apples but no bananas. The breakfast room was very clean and roomy. The hotel managers dedicated two staff uniformed staff members to the breakfast area and they had breakfast available about 15 minutes early. The problem was that the contractors staying in the hotel were waiting for breakfast and the ladies attending the breakfast were quickly out of coffee, eggs and sausage.....and very, very slow to replace the items. They were friendly, but they really need to be better prepared to keep the breakfast stocked. I hope the hotel management will train these ladies a little better to improve the breakfast experience. While the hotel was not perfect, it was a great value for less than $100 a night. We will need to stay close the race park about once a month and this hotel will be our choice. I would encourage anyone to look for 2020 reviews on this hotel and to not be discouraged by the 2019 reviews.
