On arrival we were welcomed by the friendly staff at Kakurinbo. We left our luggage to go exploring. But before we left, we ordered dinner as Endo suggested it would be easier. We walked to the small village, then climbed the 287 steps to Kuon-ji Temple. Peaceful grounds and great view from there. Dinner at Kakurinbo looked amazing (the meal I requested was basic as I had a tummy upset.) But my son really enjoyed his - lots of fresh and locally grown produce and largely vegetarian. During dinner, we were treated to a fabulous dance by Endo. He has learnt traditional dance since a young child. The staff were friendly and a big thank you to Damien for looking out for me and sharing some of his French medicine to help in my recovery to feeling better (which it did!) We slept well in our futon beds. My son woke early to catch the first prayer at the temple and then climbed to the top of Mt Mionbu - which is not for the faint hearted. But the views from the top were reward for his effort. Highly recommend Kakurinbo for its peaceful surrounds, a beautifully preserved history (the original building is 550 years old) and its proxmity to the beautiful temple. The welcoming friendly staff just adds to the special Japanese hospitality. The guests who were staying also helped translate for me (thank you Chiko) It is easily accessible from Tokyo - we took two limited express trains - leaving Shinjuku Station at 11 am arriving at Minobu station at 1.30 am. We booked a taxi from the taxi booking booth just outside the station and its a 15-minute taxi ride up some windy roads to Kakurinbo. (about 1400 yen) I loved the peaceful surroundings and easy going staff. Big thank you to the lovely guests staying at the same time as us. Chiko helped in translating Endo's and future plans for the area.

I was part of a tour guide and the way to the hotel is a bit scary but the bus driver make it through the narrow roads and bends. The hotel look wonderful outside and inside. The staff was very polite and helpful even if their English was that good. We had to watch kimono so it was an interesting and I had to get the tour guide to help me fix it as not tied properly. Our group had a proper Japanese meal and I got to try Japanese Saki. We got to use the hot pools which was very nice but you have to go in naked which was a bit scary but my first time I was alone the next time there were others but they don't look at you. We got to sleep on the floor like what the real Japanese people do - you have a mattress on the floor and you lie on it. It wasn't too bad sleeping on the floor. I will go again.

The positives to start with would be the price! It is unbeatable value. The free breakfast was amazing. Good selection of fish, meat and the usual selection of bread and rice. Free onsen for guests to use. The room itself was surprising larger than most. Parking was right in front of the hotel or at a smaller graveled area just behind. Now the negatives. The room was very dim. The carpet was grimy. The toilet bowl was absolutely tiny. Will not fit men taller than 1.7m. The water pressure was non existent. The furnishings were very dated. The hotel is located right next to a fly-over. I drove right pass it as the GPS located it right next to the road. Make sure to keep left and take the exit before you can see the hotel. I had to take 15min to U turn back. It is a little away from the town area. Its definitely serviceable for a short stay.
