Stayed one night in Hotel North Shiga for ski. Few minutes walk from Ski Lift. Check in is from 3pm, so before if you would like to drop your luggage you need to use the lockers, which cost 400-500 yen every time. Every rental costs money, ski wear/boards/gloves/lockers/yukatas..you name it. So you will spend 2000-3000 yen extra on top of your hotel room. Be prepared the hotel is dated and they do not make the beds for you. Most of the customers are college students who want a cheap stay. There is a common Japanese bath located on 6th floor. Good thing about this hotel is that they serve good buffets at dinner (especially the crab legs). And if you do not mind hotel quality, staying here for ski and just sleep is not that bad. They also offer shuttle bus to pick you up from iiyama station and drop off.

During the ski season, our resort hotel is the ultimate in convenience, being situated right next to the ski runs. You can ski until the Golden Week holidays (in early May) and for the warmer months the hotel is equipped with facilities for barbecues, mallet golf, and other enjoyable activities.

The hotel is located just 2 min walk from Yudanaka station. It’s is really convenient for accessing the ski resort at Ryuoo (free shuttle bus) and for visiting the Snow Monkeys. We were really happy with our stay. Yudanaka is a relaxed and fun place with a selection of a few really nice places to eat and really easy to access from Nagano via the station. The accommodation is basic, but has everything you need and is very clean. The Onsen in the hotel is excellent, with indoor and outdoor options. The hotel bar and restaurant offer a great facility. My only complaint was that a western breakfast was only available for 2 of our 4 days, I love Japanese food but just not for breakfast ! There are good options in town though. The staff were really friendly and made us feel so at home. Definitely worth a stay for a relaxing visit.

We had a sweet older lady take us to our room. English wasn’t her first language but that was fine as she still managed to tell us everything we needed to know about the room. Reception were very nice and helpful. The public onsen was great and I really enjoyed soaking in the water. I went around 9:30-10pm on 2 separate nights and it was almost empty. I also tried the private onsen. I have no problem being naked in front of other people so the private onsen in my opinion wasn’t worth paying for. The public onsen is at no extra cost. I really enjoyed walking around the hotel wearing a Yakuta. The Japanese breakfast had a large variety and there was so much food I couldn’t eat it all, but it was still great. The futons in the room were very comfortable. Would recommend this hotel. It was my first time in japan and I’m so glad I booked a traditional room. It was a unique and memorial experience

Stayed here for one night after visiting for the Snow monkey park and famed onsen in the area. The couple who run the ryokan were charming with great hospitality, including offering to drive us there and back to the nearby Shibu-onsen for a night time stroll, and impeccable attention to detail. The onsen within the ryokan was open 24hrs, which was great for when we got back mildly frozen from the stroll having understated the night time temperature. They also have pretty yukata (summer time kimonos) which you can borrow for free during your stay, and can go to the meal at Yorozuya in it as well. Both the dinner at Yorozuya and the breakfast on site were amazing. I'd love to go back again and have been recommending this ryokan to friends and family. 地獄谷野猿公苑と温泉のために湯田中に来た際に一晩泊まりました。とても親切できめ細やかな心遣いが嬉しかったです。温泉も朝食も良かったし、おすすめです。ありがとうございました。

The hotel is quite far from the Noji Park. There are no taxis or even other means of transportation from the scenic spot, but the town is very quiet. There is a noodle restaurant named "Fu +" which is quite good. However, the name of the wild park is not true. There are more people than monkeys, and there is no scene of a group of monkeys taking a bath. It is not bad to have a few monkeys in the spring pool. I really don’t know how the photos of the monkeys on the Internet are bathing.撵 去 🙊

One of the better ryokan in Yudanaka, the price is very good, an average of more than 2,000 a night, enjoy the hot spring hotel experience of one bed and two meals. The hotel has many years of history, but it feels very new, not old at all, clean everywhere. The room is small with a small balcony facing the river. The clerks are of a certain age and have poor language communication, but there is no inconvenience and they are polite. The location of the hotel is good, it is about 20 minutes walk from the station by the road. The hotel can pick up from the station once for free. There are also buses passing by. The hotel is right at the hot spring street. It is very convenient to walk to the hot spring street, and it can also be sent to Yepi Park for free. The meals are rich and local, and the taste is not as good as that of other hot spring hotels, but in the private dining room, they have a good time.

I stayed here in mid-December 2018 for 4 days. This is the second time that I have stayed at this hotel (my first stay was in February 2017 by myself but this time I came with my whole family – 4 adults in total). It was a truly unforgettable experience. We were treated with a lot of care, consideration and courtesy. The head manager, Misako, was very considerate, kind and approachable. We came here during the early ski season and so many of the slopes did not have a lot of snow; this meant that it was hard getting from one slope to another (as you can’t ski from slope to slope). Misako and her team drove us from one slope to another free of charge which was a very kind gesture. They also drove us to the Snow Monkey Park free of charge. Our reservation was on a half-board basis and we were treated like royalty – the waitering staff were exceptional as was the food itself. We originally booked 1 Japanese-style room for 4 adults but because the hotel was mostly empty, the staff kindly offered another room for free – it was HK$2590 per night for 4 adults half-board inclusive of taxes. The rooms are nice; the common areas haven’t been refurbished for some time but it was still adequate and comfortable enough for us. The Onsen was very nice and very big – one of the biggest ones I have been to in Japan at a hotel. The hotel also has ski boots and skis for hire which is cheaper than the nearby hotels. I am definitely returning here next time I come to Shiga Kogen. 5 stars out of 5.

It was raining and late when we arrived at Yamanouchi and, having turned up on a different schedule to plan, the hotel understandably couldn't pick us up (they offer complimentary runs from the train station to the hotel and the to the snow monkey park by the way). So we arrived a little damp and tired with our bags at the hotel. However, the warmth of the welcome and the attention to making us feel settled soon melted away the fatigue. The crowning glory, and what really put a huge grin on our faces, was finding out we had a room allocated with our own private onsen - utterly brilliant! The Japanese style room was huge and adequately equipped, the staff very friendly, the breakfast varied and tasty and the complimentary drop off / pick up at the Snow Monkey park and lift to the station hugely appreciated. If you want somewhere that pays attention to you as a guest then pick here - we would use the hotel again without hesitation.

Hotel Omodaka was fantastic! We've been up to Yamanouchi a few years ago and stayed at a much more expensive ryokan, but this trip we were trying to find something that was traditional but a bit more reasonable. I'm SO glad we ended up here! First, the owners were an adorable couple who were so friendly, helpful and accommodating. It was like staying with family. As per our booking, we called ahead the day before to confirm our reservation and book the free shuttle to the hotel from the station. We arrived a bit early at the station so the lady at the station called the hotel and they were there in minutes. What service! Our room was large, clean, and had the traditional futons and tea service set out when we arrived. We had the private bathroom in our room as well. We discussed what time would work for us for dinner. Note - for the full traditional Japanese experience, DEFINITELY book the dinner and breakfast with your room. It's so unique and high end, and they always use the freshest local ingredients. We donned our yukatas (casual kimono robes provided) and went to our private dinner just down the hall. Trust me, it's a very cool meal full of foods you're not used to eating, but there's so much variety and it's all so well prepared that you will not go hungry. (and please remember that it's rude not to eat your meal, so do your best to ingest as much as is polite). We then headed to the hot springs (men and women are separate). After you change out of your clothes and put them in the bins, the first room you enter is the bath, where you can either sit in the hot pool or use the shower heads around the room (shampoos, soaps and facial cleaners included). We found the pool way too hot, so we used some peel cream on our faces and just sat under the shower heads. Then we realized there were stairs outside that led to the outdoor hot tub! The temperature was much more tolerable out here because of the chilly air, and you get a great view of the town if you stand by the wall. Our room had its own heater and a window that opened and overlooked the river and town. We slept comfortably and soundly. We had arranged for our breakfast at 8am, and they called for us when it was time. We once again donned the yukatas and had breakfast on the main floor with other guests. The breakfast is very traditional Japanese, so if you're hoping for toast and eggs you will be disappointed. But it's all about the experience, and I loved to try what a fancy Japanese breakfast would be like! We then were given a ride in the shuttle to the snow monkey park and made arrangements for a pickup time as well, while they held our luggage at the front desk. After being picked up at the park, we drove back to the hotel, got the luggage and said our goodbyes and then we were taken to the train station. They make it all so easy for you, and their English was pretty good so communication wasn't really an issue (But I recommend Google Translate App for the trip ei

Our family spent four nights at Villa Alpen in January 2018. It is conveniently located in the Sun Valley ski village (easily accessed using the shuttle bus from Nagano station) and just a couple of minutes walk from the shuttle stop. It is a family-run business and everybody there was so welcoming and accommodating from the minute we arrived to the moment we left. The villa is not new or flash, but it is homely and comfortable. We stayed in a Japanese-style tatami room that had its own wet room (the Western style rooms do not have a bath/shower, and you have to use the onsen baths on the basement level instead). This was convenient as we were travelling with our toddler and I was six months pregnant at the time so the onsen baths didn't suit us. They also supplied a cot for our toddler to sleep in. The room was basic but cozy, warm and comfortable. Breakfast and dinner are communal, held in the large dining room on one of the lower levels. Breakfast is basic (continental style buffet with coffee/tea, juices, toast, fruit, scrambled eggs and other basics) but more than enough to get you started for the day. Dinner every night was AMAZING - a traditional Japanese meal with multiple dishes that was different every night. So much care and attention was put into these dinners and they were just outstanding every time. The staff are really lovely and attentive, and they were very sweet to our toddler as well. They even made a small birthday cake to celebrate her 2nd birthday and turned down the lights so that everybody in the dining hall could sing to her - completely unexpected and lovely! My daughter loved the children's play room on the lobby level, and there is also a bar next to reception with a wood fire, couches, games, television/DVDs, etc. The Captain was full of very good help and advice; he let us borrow a baby carrier for our walk to the snow monkey park (turns out this was VERY good advice!) and his son Ken helped us get our luggage to the bus stop in snowy conditions at the end of our stay. While I didn't do any skiing myself, my husband hired equipment from the villa which was quite affordable. He said that the ski-in/ski-out and location was great (easy access to many of the runs on the mountain using the ski lifts just outside or free shuttle bus). The ski area just outside of the villa is great for family skiing, tobogganing and just mucking around/throwing snowballs/building snowmen/etc. The villa is also conveniently located nearby to a few other hotel restaurants, so you're only a 2-minute walk away if you want to eat somewhere different. If you need 5-star accommodation then this isn't going to be the place for you, but if you want a great location with warm and engaging hosts and a family-friendly atmosphere, then you will love Villa Alpen! We will definitely come back here again next time we come to Shiga Kogen.

We stayed in a standard room and it was very quiet and comfortable and clean! They made the futon beds for us. We didn't need any heating or air conditioning because the weather was very pleasant. The room itself is very big and spacious. They had a kettle in there with coffee if you wanted. Breakfast and dinner are included in a private area just for the members of your party. And they bring your the courses one by one (I couldn't eat anymore but the food was good). I'm vegetarian and my husband has food allergies, and they were VERY accommodating of that. The presentation of the food was amazing! I think there can be more variety for vegetarian options but either way the food was very filling and delicious. Couldn't eat lunch because it is so filling! I think one more thing that could have made it better is to teach people like me how to eat certain foods or what exactly it is so we know what to do. But other than that it was amazing. The staff were incredibly friendly! Though language was a barrier they were so apologetic that they couldn't speak to us in English but hey, I was in Japan, I should be trying to speak to them in Japanese (not the other way around)! The staff go out of their way to make sure they are making your stay comfortable from the moment you walk in to even after your check out! They have their own personal onsen (separate for men and women), but lockers/boxes to keep your stuff, soaps/shampoos/dryers for before/after the onsen. It was so nice and warm and peaceful. They have an indoor and an outdoor one. The outdoor one was amazing because it was cool outside but you're nice and warm in the water. The location is perfect! Was very easy to get from Nagano to Yudanaka to the hotel. The hotel is about a 40-45 min walk to the snow monkey park with some uphill walking. or there is a bus you can take as well. we opted to walk which was nice because you get to see different Temples and shrines along the way and you meet a lot of friendly people in the area. Some people invited us to their picnic and sake! It was raining on of the days, but the hotel provides you with rain boots if you'd like and umbrellas. They also provide you with kimono's, towels, and Japanese foot wear to wear to the different onsens in the area. There are plenty of shops and restaurants nearby where everyone was friendly (and I even happened to find vegetarian food outside one day)! A gorgeous hotel in a gorgeous location! Would definitely stay again!

We stayed at Chalet Christiania for four nights in Feb 2019. The Chalet has a traditional feel, comfortable and warm, up the end of the valley where it’s peaceful. It’s a 50m ski/board from the drying room at the Chalet to the bottom of the Okushigakogen Hotel quad lift! And the Shiga Kogen pass (not much more expensive than Okushigakogen only) allows you to ski between multiple ski fields without walking or bussing at all. The food at Christiania was a highlight of our trip - western with a Japanese twist. Included is a big breakfast with delicious homemade jams, and dinner is a five course meal, every course cleverly thought out and expertly prepared. The food is as great as it looks in the photos! A large variety of local beers and international wines is available for well-priced purchase. The people at Chalet Christiania are friendly, kind and make every effort to make you feel at home. We spoke very little Japanese and a couple of the waitresses spoke great English which was a relief! But any effort to say good morning/thank you in Japanese is greeted with much enthusiasm. Also free, fast WiFi It’s easy to get to the Chalet without a car - the Nagano Snow Shuttle, or by train to Nagano then a ~1hr bus to the Okushigakogen Hotel (2000Y pp) then a 50m walk. There’s a shuttle bus around the valley which you can take for free (during normal ski hours) to other ski fields or onsens. Hint: the hotels, chalets and pensions take credit card, but buses, most lunch locations and vending machines don’t and there is only one ATM within Shiga Kogen. Take some cash!

We 3 families have spent the whole week there and find it an extremely pleasant experience. I would definitely rate it 5 stars and will recommend it to others. There is one major reason why I rated this - the hotel owner Yugo Nose San is such a nice, considerate and professional person. I’m a very frequent traveller and of course I agree there are some other hotels with better hardware quality. But the service we received from Yugo San is absolutely first class. Some examples: - his English proficiency is very high as he’s spent 16 years in Europe. - he drove us to the ski park and even led us to the track to make sure our kids are comfortable with it - he proactively drove us to the Snow Monkey Park when he knew we might need to wait for an hour for the bus. - he served us whiskey and snacks every night - he planned for us how to go to airport in a better way, again proactively There are some other examples showing that he is always willing to step beyond his duty and is so flexible that he always puts the customers first. I can see some positive and negative comments about the hotel and I do agree with most of these comments. However, with Yugo San, everything becomes different. Our kids also love it so much, mainly because of him. Very well done, thanks for your service and we will come back for sure.
